I've been gettin g a lot of phishing emails from paypal. If you click on the plink, it looks EXACTLY like the real page, and even clicking on those links will redirect you to the real site. The tip off is the IP address in the Http link. Not a definate clue, but one withh a bunch of unidentified numbers in it should raise suspicion. paypal has link that you can use to report phishing.

I'm so sorry. I have also gotten the "fake ebay letters" and almost sent them my personal information until a red flag went up and I asked Dh about it.  He's a computer security expert. he told me that the information in the sender address is the clue.  I'll find out what it is and let you all know.

That said...I buy almost EVERYTHING off of ebay. Big purchases like computers to breast milk bags, kids clothes, bike gear, baby gear, art, housewares. I've never had a problem. Both my dh and I sell as well and make decent money. Example, I bought our single Burley used, 2 years ago, for $125.  It is going to sell on ebay for over $170.

I am so sorry you got ripped off. That's such a bummer.

Holy smokes, I almost got took by the same scam about two days ago . . . although it was for only $17, not $1,225. I had bid on a TI DVD and got beat out (by about $50 bucks) when the seller contacted me through email and offered a "Second Chance". Well, I'd never heard of that function on eBay before, so I looked it up on the eBay FAQ and noticed that it said that sellers offering a "Second Chance" would only ever do it through eBay itself, not through email. So I wrote back to the guy and asked why his "Second Chance" didn't appear on my "MyeBay" page. He never wrote back. Now I know why. Sorry to hear that you got cheated, Scott Loong, but I was almost right there with you.

Here's the link to the eBay FAQ on "Second Chance" scammers.

Here's the scam:

Scott,
Don't give up! I saw a documentary last month about eBay on CNBC and these guys took all their savings, about $1,500 and bought camera equipment on eBay. They never got it, and of course reported it to eBay/police, etc. Not getting results, they tracked down the guy's address somehow, maybe through his ISP, and DROVE TO HIS HOUSE in Vegas. Took 'em a day or two to get there. They knocked on the door and said the guy had a gun on his table, so they backed down and got the local cops to move in. Took him to court and WON. That's pretty extreme, but I suppose it depends on how far you are willing to go to get your $ back. Good luck!

Yeah, that is a thought. I mean, you have to have this guys address, etc. because of the money order, and he did commit fraud. See if you can pursue it through legal means.

Well, you are not alone. My husband was the victim of a similar scam a few months ago. Out $1000 by Western Union. Crazy. Mostly he just feels embarrassed and we don't talk about it. Really sucks. Feel you pain.

I had my credit card skimmed by someone, two copies were made and used in Vegas and Miami...a 635 dollar cell phone purchase, 200 dollars in alcohol, and then Visa denied a 500+ boutique purchase in vegas because I only have a 1000 dollar limit. I was SO ROYALLY PISSED. I think I'm going to try and go investigative reporter style and find out who did it and then sue their asses.

Sorry to hear about your ebay troubles. I recently bought my bike through ebay and the seller wanted me to pay with money order. The seller did accept PayPal and I expressed my reservations about a money order. Ultimately, I did pay through Paypal and have been very satisfied with my bike. It's an entry level, but i saved about 300 through ebay buying an older model that had only been riden a handful of times as opposed to buying a newer model brand new. Sorry again to hear about ti.
