A couple of us are going to ride the MarQuee Half IM bike route this Sunday, 3/6.  More specifics to come, but right now plans are to kick off at about 7am from the Tempe Beach parking lot on the west side of the park on Rio Salado, and ride the two (2) loops to hit the 56 miles.

Ride your own pace - we will be somewhere between 17-19mph average for the duration.

The more the merrier.......

Patrick

The bike course is just a 28 mile out and back, isn't it?

Correct.  The turn-around is a bit short of IM AZ turn.

I was planning on doing a 56 miler on Saturday by myself but this might be even better. I'll figure out my plans and let you know if I'll be there. Thanks for setting this up.

Wwisler - To clarify (now that I re-read your post);

The half IM dstance is a two-loop route.  Each loop is 28 miles (14 miles out and back).  It is not a single loop course.

IM AZ is three (3) 37+ mile loops along the same route (but extends further up Beeline Hwy).

Here is the route information:

South on Rio Salado out of parking lot
East along Rio Salado to McClintock (Hayden)
North along McClintock (Hayden) to McKellips
East along McKellips to Alma School
North on Alma School to McDowell
East on McDowell to Beeline Hwy
North on Beeline Hwy to the Central AZ Project canal
Turn around and go back
Do that twice, and we are done!

The CAP Canal is not going to be a safe or easy place to turn around. On a closed course yes, but not on Sunday with the traffic. We may want to turn around at Gilbert or Shea.

Are the dogs still there on Alma School that usually give chase?

I'm riding on Saturday otherwise I'd join the group. Have fun!

azstaterick - 2011-03-01 12:26 PM The CAP Canal is not going to be a safe or easy place to turn around. On a closed course yes, but not on Sunday with the traffic. We may want to turn around at Gilbert or Shea.

Good point Rick - I had not considered that.  Maybe we can do both to keep the miles intact - first loop go to Shea (additional 4.6 miles past the AZ Canal each way), then second loop make the turn at Gilbert (2 miles shorter than the AZ Canal each way).  The long/short loops would result in a 61 mile ride.

I did another goof - mentioned the CAP canal, when the race turning point will be at the AZ canal, which is about 2-2.5 miles short of the CAP canal.

Sunrise has been a bit before 7 lately, so plans are to meet up in the parking lot on Rio Salado (west side of Tempe Beach Park) and hit the road at 7:00 (so arrive as early as you need to stretch, air up tires, hydrate, etc).  Feel free to look for me - I will be the guy with the bike.  HA HA

I'll be there. I'm ok changing the route for safety. I just want to get my miles in and to ride the route. This will not be a haul ride for me at all, I'm guessing 16-17 mph/avg.

It looks like for the race, the half turnaround will be close to the AZ canal, which is about 2-2.5 miles past Gilbert Rd.

For a 60 mile ride, our first loop will go to Shea, then the second loop would go to Gilbert (or something like that).

Looking forward to this ride.  Below is the URL of the MapMyRide route - with the Shea/Gilbert loops we are right at 63 miles.

Sunrise is scheduled to be at 6:50 Sunday morning.  Plan to meet in the parking lot at about 6:45 for a 7:00 kick-off.  Weather should be very nice Sunday.

Bring your own nutrition - see you all there!

Thanks to all who came out for the ride this morning.  It was great to finally meet people from BT.

That was a fun 60 mile ride.

Rick - hope you feel better.

See you all out there, or at MarQuee in about 4 weeks!

Thank you so much for organizing this. I think we should plan another ride in 2 weeks. It was so nice to ride with people that are at my speed and meet some more BT folks. Sorry to hear that Rick wasn't feeling good and that Javamom had a flat. I think it was a good group this morning and we had great weather except that wind up the hill. We rock!
