Subject: Staying on trainer...even during good weather
Hey everyone, just wanted to get some opinions/experiences about year round trainer work.  This August is my first full Iron distance event, and in the past the groups I've worked with just told me to find something else to do in the winter to stay in shape, specifically meaning get off the bike and trainer and take a break.  Since I was paranoid about being ready for IM, I've been on the trainer religiously since January and have made huge improvements.  I know that a trainer is no replacement for the road, but I've considered staying indoors throughout the summer minus my Saturday long ride and Sunday recovery ride.  Does this make sense or should I just put the trainer away in a couple weeks like most?  Anyone else use a trainer in the Spring and Summer?

I use my trainer here round. In fact, in some rides it makes more sense to use the trainer like hard intervals.

a straight jacket might be in your future! hahaha, at least for me. I hate the trainer and love getting out in the fresh air. Whatever tickles your pickle though.

I use the trainer during the week(interval work) and get on the road during the weekend. We have nice weather year round, but the traffic is too horrific during the week to even attempt a ride on the road.

I think there are a couple of pros (Andy Potts, may be one of them?) as well as a guy on BT somewhere (maybe he’ll chime in), who do all their bike training indoors.

A watt is a watt is a watt, whether it’s on the road or on a trainer.

As long as you’re confident in your bike handling skills and aren’t worried about going insane with boredom, spending so may hours on a trainer, I don’t see why it would be a problem.

A watt is a watt is a watt, whether it’s on the road or on a trainer.

I guess that's decent reasoning if all you want is watts. I cycle for many more reasons than that. I would go insane if I did all or even most of my riding on the trainer. To me the trainer is a necessary evil, to be used only in dire situations like ice and snow, or super heavy sustained winds. If riding indoors on a sunny spring day works for you, have at it. Enjoy! It doesn't cut it for me.

Road is always smooth.

there's always a bathroom nearby.

doesn't matter how much your bike weighs.

don't need to stop at intersections.

will Never get hit by a car.

hmmm, maybe I should get me one of those trainers.

I like the trainer, and will be on it for most of the year b/c of location, but I don't think it's a substitute for riding outside.

There are benefits of riding outside that you don't get on the trainer: core strengthening, handling skills, elements, mental aspect, the inbred redneck throwing a beer bottle at you, etc.

But, if you're still getting outside, then you should be good to go...

Good luck with your training!

I hate my trainer, but I have to use if for my mid week rides because it is more convenient.  I've even put the trainer on teh deck int eh backyard to be outside but, I can ride in teh dark and get off if my kids wake up, etc.  That said I hate it.  I got rollers this winter and have been using them as a change up.  30 minutes on rollers equals about 1 hour on the trainer IMO.  Also, it jsut may be the best core work out you can get.

plus add a projector and a laptop and you have a 50+ inch screen to watch movies on too.

But I am looking forward to getting my bike out on the road again.

I really like my rollers, but mine did not come with a resistance unit, so i feel the rides are (unrealistically) easy-ish...that being said, core gets a hell of a workout. I don't see the 30min-1hr argument, though...they're totally different workouts.

Cool

Ok, so two comments on here from folks in Georgia, one about traffic, one about location. I did a quick Google map look up up Dallas Georgia and Hinesville Georgia. Both areas look pretty rural to me, especially compared to the Philadelphia area. Is there something about Georgia that is particularly not bike friendly?

There's many reasons for doing a lot of your training indoors, especially during the week.  I have my own, but it comes down to one question only:  Does it work for you?  If so, there's your answer.

I ride mine year round. I mean, I do ride outside in nice weather (and by that, I mean REALLY nice weather ;-))...but I'd say I am on  the trainer at least 3x a week, even in the summer.

FWIW,

I have enjoyed my trainer so much this winter that I plan to use it during the spring and summer. I can really get a focused workout without the issues of riding outside. I will still do my long rides outdoors. I met the 30-34 to age group winner at IM Cozumel. He told me he did all of his training indoors on a computrainer. That was enough to convince me it is a reasonable option

I'm not in GA right now, bro.

If I was, I'd be outside. Cool

2 things, Hinesville is army town town, 10,000 soldiers trying to get on post for PT, then going home after PT to shower, going into town for lunch, and getting off work from 4-6, it causes a lot of traffic.

Second, my town has a horrible pitbull problem. I can't run in my neighborhood anymore, because we have 2 neighborhood pitbulls terrorizing anyone who even tries to go for a walk, and the police won't do anything, even though one of them attacked one of my dogs and bit another runner. I tried to go on a century ride this weekend, and I was on a country road, and was chased half a mile by a snarling pitbull, I thought I was going to died, I really felt like my life was threatened. I usually carry my .380 on the bike, but I thought I would be ok since it was suppose to be a "supported" ride. On the weekends I have to drive an hour to Savannah to go for a safe bike ride.

Why does it matter to you?

People end up doing what they perceive works for them. That might be different than what works for you.

There isn't a wrong answer is there?

I think "Why does it matter to you?" may be on the border line of a wrong answer

I was curious is all. Humans are fascinating creatures and I love to see what makes people tick. Hadn't considered the redneck factor.
