This is one example where I think the "train like you race" mentality really rings true.  In a race, you will have to deal with road conditions, bike handling, etc.   Also there's the mental game of focusing on that bike ride without the TV.  I have only done a half iron distance, but I found the bike to MIND NUMBINGLY boring.  In my training rides I had gone with friends, gotten off the bike at the gas station, etc.  Actually sitting on the bike for a few hours outside really is useful training.

You mentioned you'd still keep the long weekend rides, I think that's a good idea.

I think that riding outside as much as possible is the prize for training for triathlon, so I don't plan to look at my trainer for a few  months.  But, I think as long as you keep up with the outside rides as well as trainer rides, you'll be just fine.  If I had kids/dogs/rednecks to deal with, I am sure I feel the same as many of you.

On the trainer, you don't have the opportunity to be passed by very fit women wearing spandex.

just kidding, just kidding, some of us don't watch TV/computer on the trainer, at least I don't.  I am suffering too hard through tough intervals to pay attention anyway.

Very true, but I fear that would significantly effect my fit.

I usually carry my .380 on the bike,

Cool!

HA! I had to look up what a .380 is. Had no idea. The next time I complain about cycling in Michigan I'll just think, 'hey, at least I don't have to carry a firearm on my rides!'

I'm in sunny CA, and even during lovely spring & summer, due to scheduling, I do at least 50% of my bike miles on the trainer, with that number approaching 100% in the fall/winter due to a busy work schedule. I friggin' love (hate) my trainer!

It's really up to you. I can ride outside year-round here, but recently started using my trainer because I can get a more structured workout. There are a lot of hills where I live, so it's tough to structure intervals, etc. I still ride outdoors, too but mostly for my weekend group ride. It's still important to get out on the road, in the hills, etc.

I can't imagine doing a 2-hr ride on the trainer though. I'm using it for tempo rides and HIIT.

Couple of things to keep in mind:

1) Most "new" triathletes don't even have trainers.  They instead have to use a bike machine or whatever else their local gym has, so just having a trainer and being able to put time on your bike is a huge plus.

2) Nothing will substitute road experience though.  Although most races will not have busy traffic, stop lights, and stop signs that you have to contend with, but most courses are only semi-closed, meaning they remain open to local traffic, so you need to get use to just riding in a somewhat limited area.  Also learning to deal with bumps, cracks, and potholes is a must.

I think getting the best of both worlds is to do your core workouts on the indoor trainer and then trying to get road experience during group rides.  I would think you feel a little bit more safe riding with 3-5 other people (hoping drivers will see you)...and it does give you more of a race experience having bikers in front and back of you.  Of course, if you have a tri bike, you really can't group ride too close, but if you have a lot of space in between..it's fine.

I do about half my riding throughout the year on the trainer even during nice weather. I do not worry to much about if it is indoors or out unless it is a race rehearsal or testing then it is outdoors.

Nicest day of the year here today and I was on the trainer. Hubby has to work late and the kids were napping. I put the trainer on the patio and still enjoyed the day.

Personally I need a lot of practice with bike handling skills so I try to get outside as much as possible. Even in the winter if I can possibly stand it.

I ride outdoors when I can in the nice weather (weekends) but still do just as much work on the trainer.  I do most of my weekday training after my kids go to bed, which doesn't usually leave enough daylight for an outdoor ride of any meaningful distance.

I too do all of my training during weekdays on the trainer indoors.  I am training for my first HIM in Galveston in 3 weeks. I just do not have the time to get out and ride outside during the weekday. My only free time is early morning 5AM (DARK) or after 5PM (TRAFFIC).  Not worth the risk to me.  I did set my trainer up in my media room though.  I pop in a good movie and turn the sound up.  Before you know it, I have been on that puppy for 2 hours.  I am a nocie though. Not looking to win any races.  I have seen drastic improvement from my interval work though.

Year-round, almost all rides of 2 hours or less, including all intervals, are on the trainer. I got hooked when recovering from a crash that prevented me from riding outside for a while, and never looked back. Much easier for fitting in some quality training time around work/family schedules. The first winter I resented it, but now I really like it. Outside riding is for long rides on weekends, and for commuting to the office or to the pool.

Hmm, I'm guessing about 1/3 of my rides are on the trainer.  Today was our nicest day of the year and I was riding the trainer on our back porch while my kids took a nap!

mrbbrad - 2011-03-21 3:13 PM Ok, so two comments on here from folks in Georgia, one about traffic, one about location. I did a quick Google map look up up Dallas Georgia and Hinesville Georgia. Both areas look pretty rural to me, especially compared to the Philadelphia area. Is there something about Georgia that is particularly not bike friendly?

Yep, Rednecks.

I have rednecks and winter visitors in Florida. I much prefer the rednecks.

I ride mostly on the trainer.  I have gone months at a time without riding outside.  Long rides up to 5 hours, short rides, recovery rides, interval sessions.  The trainer made me the rider I am .

Safer and more effective.

Less laundry.

More consistent intervals.

1/2 the tire wear and no flats.

Weekends - outside.  Weekdays - trainer.  Kids, wife, job = no time to ride outside during the week, but I can get in the ride on the trainer + I can be much more specific about the training session.  Absolutely agree that it's more "fun" to ride outside, unfortunately it's just not as feasible.

Riding a bike outside is a fun and engaging activity.

Sitting on a trainer and pedaling is neither ... at least for me.

I use the trainer only when absolutely necessary ... Nov - Feb when the sun sets too early to ride outside, and on weekends days in the winter on the rare occasion we have snow or ice. Other than that, I am outside.

I am fortunate to live in a rural area of North Carolina with lots of roads that have very little traffic. Yes there are dogs, and occasional idiots that like to yell at you ... but you learn to deal with both and doesn't take away from the enjoyment of a 50-mile ride on a warm sunny day.

I'm starting to become a believer in the trainer. I am still relatively new but the whole appeal to riding a bike to me is being outside enjoying the scenery and "going somewhere" on the bike.

Since I started training for the triathlons I have more structured workouts on the trainer and like someone else said, its safer and no flats. Today the wind is blowing over 30mph here and its flat as a pancake so I brought the trainer out to the back patio and did my ride in the sun, feeling the breeze, with some tunes going (not earphones) and had a great workout.

I really like riding outside, but to me getting in the right workout is pretty important at this stage of my development. I have heard from many other riders that the trainer has really made them who they are.
