I am in for the Marathon. Should be a good time, anyone have any advice on running this course?  Is it 'flat'? What type of running surface does the race take place on?  I am really hoping to qualify for Boston through this race and can't wait to give it a try.  First organized marathon race for me, and hopefully a Boston qualifying one. Should be a good time, nothing like driving up from the western Chicago suburbs the Friday before the race, sleeping in my car, and waking up to a marathon race with only 5-6 hours of sleep.  Wish all you the best, and thank you to those volunteering for this.

I would call it flat. maybe some minor rolling hills that you have to look for to see. Mostly asphalt road in a stinky river valley. Parks on both sides of the road and a few golf courses. Good for a negative split. The first 1/2 is upstream and the second is down.

I've only run the HM course, but I would call the marathon course a dead flat, boring, out-n-back. Expect 0 spectators from miles 7 - 18 and maybe you'll be surprised to see one. You'll be alone in your head for a long time, and I think that aspect is important to prepare for, so that's why I'm saying it. iPods were allowed last year, so if you fancy running with such devices, I'd recommend it.

Also, I wouldn't sleep in my car in Dearborn, but that might just be me.

Thanks for the info. This is exactly the type of course/race I was hoping for in terms of limited spectators and very limited distractions.  I'm amped.  As for sleeping in my car, I'll try to find some nice houses to post up in front of for the night. Don't call the police if you see a mysterious car parked outside of your house for an extended period of time.

I did this last year. Be careful if you get the 10k, they are hard to keep up with even on a bike.

Last year they started us too close to the runners.  I felt so bad, I was in their way out of the gates.    I had to really push to get well in front of them. No matter what Martian tells you, start near the street.  Trust me.  You will have the slower half marathon runners, like me that you will be getting out of their way.  Say hi as you yell at me to get out of the leaders way.

Enjoy, your volunteering is done and over very quickly.

A friend and I are in for volunteering.  I can't wait!  After running Detroit in the fall I'm amped to return the favor of volunteering.  Not sure if it's allowed but my friend and I talked about running the half course after the race is over.

I just noticed that Martian moved the 10k up to 8am and the half-marathon back to 8:45am. Last year at the end of the course there was a bottleneck with 10k and HM runners on the narrow park path. Hopefully the same won't happen with 5k and HM runners this year.

Race Times:

* Marathon - 7:15 am
* Meteor 10K - 8:00 am
* Half Marathon - 8:45 am
* Meteor 5K - 9:00 am
* Kid's Marathon - 11:30 AM
