Subject: What makes YOU a good Facebook friend?

Why I Am a Good Facebook Friend

[this is SO going to come back and bite me in the butt … ]

  1. I won’t ask you to be my friend unless you actually are my friend or we have some legitimate connection. (Or illegitimate, if it’s interesting enough).
  2. My profile pic is actually me, so that you have half a chance of knowing who I am, again.
  3. I have no baby llamas for you to adopt. I don’t need you to assassinate anyone for me (that’s a want, not a need). I am not going to tell you what God can very well tell you Himself today. Yes, I have no lucky nuts, fortune cookies, Chloe-esque psychics (for cryin’ out loud, I AM one), or chain-cliches for you today.
  4. You will never know what I had for breakfast. (If you know me, the answer is obvious. And if you don’t, you’re not my friend anyway. Otherwise—who the hell cares???)
  5. I don’t ask you to re-post things. I already posted them. Refer back to me. Thanks.
  6. I don’t post four-letter-words, including “Blah,” as my status.
  7. I don’t post four words, including “Um, I am confused,” as my status.
  8. I don’t post anything I could potentially post four more times, such as “I’m bored,” as my status. (That’s what double-posting in TAN is for).
  9. You don’t need to know when I wake up, when I have coffee, when I crap, when I yawn, when I’m off to work/school/grocery/etc., and you sure as hell don’t need to know my 4th cat just woke up, either. (Heh … )
  10. I’m not going to ask you to “Like” my obscure artist friend from Madrid.
  11. If a political rant is longer than four lines and I didn’t write it, I’ll just refer it, and actually explain why it’s worth spending your second of click time to review.
  12. I don’t consider Facebook a substitute for chain letters and e-mails. If it’s worth sending to your five friends or you’ll die, I want some kind of a guarantee on that.
  13. I’m not going to ask you to answer 20 questions about me. I don’t even want to answer 20 questions about myself. I might want to post 27,000 times about me, but not 20 questions.
  14. You’re not going to know the moment, with vid, when my niece learned to say “Ba ba ba.” (Good thing, too, because she’s almost 30 now).
  15. No other person, much less an auto-posting app, updates my status for me.
  16. I KNOW you don’t care that I downloaded a Beatles song today. BEATLES?! No way! Download? That’s crazy! Wow! I don’t even know how to respond, really.

Sending my Friend request now...

Actually, I don't think I've ever sent one. You'd be the first. I pretty much don't post anything on FB.

I don't play any games/use any apps that "auto post" on facebook.  No playstation awards, no foursquare checkins, no requests for junk in fronteirville.

Now THAT is worth posting on Facebook!  Maybe some of my friends that violate most of your rules would get the hint...doubtful.

I just thought everyone loved baby llamas. I see now that I was wrong.

The pictures I would have to send to you privately, no need to share with everyone.

Mrs gearboy was over facebook before she was ever even on it. She has never set up a profile, pretty much (a) to avoid the kinds of things you are not doing and (b) because in her view, if you are her friend, she sees you enough that you don't need to FB friend her. And anything that the kids post, she can see through my profile. Which is predominantly set up to keep up with the kids and to use for online photo albums. I almost never post a status update, and rarely comment on other peoples. Like you said, that's what COJ is for.

Yeah, what she said. Only more. Or less?

F*** YOUR FARM!

I'm fairly picky about whom I select on Facebook, wanting to have some connection.  You went to junior or highschool with me?  S what? Most people were jerks then.  My friend count is still in double digits.

LinkedIn on the other hand I am a little less picky. That's for CAREER stuff! Real networking, not helping to raise magic goofy fruit.

And while we are on the subject: if you choose to send a connection request to someone you don't interact with regularly or haven't talked to in years, make a little mention of how you know them.  I waste enough time as it is without playing detective trying to figure out if I'm being spammed or not. Kthanx!

Posts like this kinda crack me up. These social sites are a whole new paradigm and people are still sorting out how they work best. Some people use Facebook every day, all day, and some post once a week. I've been told by some friends that I post too much, and by others that I don't post enough. Neither of these views is wrong. I post "just-enough" for me.

As for the games, it's really easy to block the application for the game without blocking the "friend."Then you'll never see the posts that come up in your feed, or the requests that get sent to you. Easy-peasy.

The only rules I follow for FB is that I don't post pictures of people without their approval first. And I don't tag people in photos if they've asked not to be tagged. I comment on political posts, but keep it respectful and diplomatic. And I ask friends to have the same level of respect for me and my posts.

I've only unfriended a few people, and none of them were Real Life friends, but instead were friends-of-friends that I thought might contribute something interesting, and then turned out to be the kind of people I don't like to be around.

Amen.  I had someone unfriend me for my game posts.  And it was someone I really wanted to keep in touch with.  I tried to tell them that they can block the game posts and it's super easy.  I block all of them except the one game I play.  But this person decided that was too much effort.  Alas, friend lost.

I think FB does a great job of allowing you to block what you don't want to see.  I don't know why people get their panties in a wad over what people post.
