New user 394 | Subject: Tempe Town Lake and Open Water Swimming Training Just wondering, how come we can't train/swim in Tempe Town Lake? Seems like races are okay, but, not just training. Any one know why? |

Expert 932 Chandler, AZ | Subject: RE: Tempe Town Lake and Open Water Swimming Training I was wondering the same thing. I'm doing my first sprint on May 15th in Tempe and the only thing I've never done was do an open water swim. I've heard that they open it up before race day, but haven't seen anything online. Hopefully someone here will know something... |

Master 2411 Goodyear, AZ | Subject: RE: Tempe Town Lake and Open Water Swimming Training You cant swim in Tempe town lake unless it's part of an event. There is a Splash and Dash series coming up: www.4peaksracing.com The first one is next sunday. Sometimes there are swim clinics. I think Redrock had one this weekend. But you cant just get in and start swimming- without getting in trouble. You can swim out at one of the other lakes. I was just out at Saguaro lake this afternoon, there's a designated swimming area at Butcher Jones Cove, the water was nice. |

New user 394 | Subject: RE: Tempe Town Lake and Open Water Swimming Training thanks all. I am doing Splash and Dash next weekend as a primer for Marquee so I will be in TTL the next couple of weekends. As that lake is the closest I was just wishing that I would be able to get some more OWS in in lieu of driving farther to the other ones. |

Veteran 189 | Subject: RE: Tempe Town Lake and Open Water Swimming Training Any idea of the water temp in Tempe Town Lake? The web site that used to show it doesn't anymore. Maybe they lost that capability when the dam broke last year. |

Master 1484 Sedona, AZ | Subject: RE: Tempe Town Lake and Open Water Swimming Training There's probably some liability involved, too. Events likely need insurance along with volunteers in the water. I'm thinking about the S&D this weekend too. What's the format? How early do I have to be there? It's a hike from Sedona and they start a little early. I can use as much OWS practice as possible. |

Thanks. What about arriving early to set up transition, find parking or pre-race meetings? |

Extreme Veteran 648 Scottsdale | Subject: RE: Tempe Town Lake and Open Water Swimming Training We were talking about the TTL temps this past weekend at the RedRock swim clinic. Someone said they heard it was forecasted to be mid to high 60's. I am planning on low to mid 60's based on the temp at Bartlett this last weekend, and the rise in general temperatures the next couple weeks. As for Splash n Dash this weekend, 1000 or 2000 M swim (your choice on event day, I think ) with a 4 mile run after each. Parking is limited at the marina, and they have not said anything about transition setup as of yet. Check in starts at 6am, so I plan to get there about 5:30 to ensure a space at the marina (we are cycling the MaRquee loop once after S&D for a brick). |

Expert 1224 | Subject: RE: Tempe Town Lake and Open Water Swimming Training the splash n dashes are very low key. i wouldn't show up at 5:30, unless you want to be the first person to get there. i've never had a problem with a parking spot at the marina. last year i showed up 15 minutes before the race started (i got off work late and it was a 6pm race) and got my bib number and set up my transition in time. 30-40 minutes should give you enough time. |

Veteran 189 | Subject: RE: Tempe Town Lake and Open Water Swimming Training BRRRR! Anything 60s will be cold for me. I am slow, slim, and don't like cold water. I was pretty chilled at Blue Water a few years ago and they said it was 74. I only have a sleevless wetsuit and will be doing the Olympic. I wonder if I should upgrade, or even rent a full sleeved one. |

I was hoping to leave here at around 5 AM... Looking at the 2K swim. How many are biking afterward? Sounds like it could be a good ride. I haven't ridden any of the routes down there and will be competing in the Marquee. Is everyone bringing their road bikes or their funny ones? |

You're probably better off jumping into a manhole and swimming in sewage. |

Extreme Veteran 648 Scottsdale | Subject: RE: Tempe Town Lake and Open Water Swimming Training Thanks for the tip Elliot! Last thing I want is to show up and beat the event organizers! The marina, and the event, are on the north side of TTL. DO NOT go to Tempe Beach park on the south side. If you Google map the lake, you will see where the road comes into the marina, under the 202. So far I think there are three (3) of us planning to ride a single loop up to the AZ Canal and back, which will be about 25-28 miles. Nothing too crazy or overboard a week before the Half IM. |

I own a pair for my sleeveless suit, it will only leave your shoulders exposed so you get some decent coverage and warmth. |
