Dixbry - 2011-04-29 2:45 PM Does anyone know what the current water temp is?

69F http://www.whitelakewatersports.com/

But keep in mind that one hot day (or one COLD night) has a huge impact on that lake.

I have been checking that website.  But the 69 degrees temp is from the 23rd of April.  They have not updated the temp since then. I was wondering if anyone knew a more current temp.

4/30/11 Water Temp:  72 degrees.  If the weather forecast for May 4th (67 high/45 low) holds true, I think wetsuits will be legal for the races on 5/7/11 and 5/8/11.

The weather is looking nice for that day too.  Only 55 percent humidity.  Hoping it stays that way.  And I think you are right on the water.  If the temps dip into the 40s at night like it says it will, then the races for the first weekend should be wetsuit legal.

I noticed they are moving the pasta dinner that was offered at the church last year to the FFA center. Has anyone ever eaten the dinner offered in the past? Would u recommend?

Several members form my Tri Club will be there as volunteers.  I'll be on the bike route someplace handing out water bottles.

Maybe I should make a sign?  Hmmm... I'll have to ponder that.

Instead of stuffing myself in a oven for 5.5 hours again this year, I will be in Caribbean drinking my keister off with Mickey and Minnie Mouse.

Good luck to those who read the race reports and STILL signed up anyways!!!  ;-)

Is anyone going to put their bike in transition the night before.  It looks like you have an assigned spot on the rack, what would be the advantage to leaving bike overnight?

In some races, including Ironman brand races, you MUST put your bike in transition the day before.  I have not done a race that required this.  At White Lake, the only advantage would be not having to worry about placing you bike in transition on race morning (not really a big deal, IMHO).  I am not going to put my bike in transition on Friday.  The wording "police will be monitoring transition" does not sit well with me.  It makes it seem like there will be times when transition is not guarded.  Just my 2 cents.

actually, the police sit at the gates of the transition/ FFA entrance. I arrived a lil too early last year and they had to move the cruisers that barricaded the entry. I saw about 3 cop cars there with cops partoling at the wee hours...

Swim cancelled due to heavy fog.  Sorry for all.  I'm really surprised because the live camera seems to show that the fog has finally lifted.  I guess they had to make the call by 8AM.  If the swim is cancelled for tomorrow I don't think I'll even bother with the bike and run.  It's supposed to be my first OWS.

As Bob said, they cancelled the swim due to fog.  As soon as they made the call, the lifeguards left then the fog lifted.  Benji with Set Up Events is a good guy, and does everything he can for the racers.  Just an unfortunate set of circumstances today.  No swim got me off my mental game and my bike time was negated by cramping on the run.  Just a bad day all around for me.  Maybe I'll try again next year........

Tough to have the swim cancelled...kinda throws you off. Sorry to hear your day didn't go well. But as you said, at least there are other races!

You know I realize you can't control the weather but you made bad call after bad call Saturday. So Don't act like you couldn't have handled things differently.

1- there should be a policy in affect for inclemente weather like we will delay the race 1-2 hours then make a call
.

You then say we will make a call on the swim at 8am then you don't wait till 8 to make that call if you did you wouldn't have cancelled the swim.

To top it off you let the water safety Kayaks go? who's bright idea was that that?

Please don't act like you were without blame on this, when people admit there mistakes I can live with it and move on, but it pisses me off saying this was all about safety, as we lined up to run to our bikes you could see every bouy on the swim course.

I can't make it this weekend and might have went back in 2012 but with no discount and this half explaination I won't be back and will avoid setup events if possible.

And why you lie to people to tell them the bike course has ecellent roads...most folks I talked to thought they were awful, and I am still looking for the shaded area's on the run....man just tell the truth.

I agree.....I thought it was chaos.  I raced it.  In no way should the safety people left until the race actually started.  It was pure BS in my book.  I picked this event for the swim.  And then the whole mess with you can't wear your helmets for run into t1, and then wait, you can.  All the back and forth.  So disorganized.

And I agree on the roads.  Their idea of excellent paved roads and mine are completely different.

Here's the policy direct from the Set Up website:

The event will be postponed until 7:45 AM in hopes the inclement weather will pass.
If inclement weather does not pass by 7:45 AM, the event will be changed to a duathlon format.

Given that.......

We were all disappointed that the swim was cancelled.  I believe the call to cancel the swim came at about 7:45 or 7:50, so they did adhere to the policy.  It was a freak of nature that the fog lifted in a matter of minutes.  The duathlon format caused me a mental blow that I never recovered from and I had a terrible race.  As far as letting the lifeguards go, that is a no brainer.........no swim = no need for lifeguards. (And I agree the call being made before 8 after being told 8 was even more disappointing).

Set Up Events (Benji Jones included) do a wonderful job producing events.  Do not let this experience ruin possible future positive experience.  Saturday was a very difficult set of circumstances to deal with.

As far as the roads are concerned......they are pretty much terrible.  Anyone who says differently is crazy.

I agree totally. They actually did everything they could to get the swim in. It was unfortunate but these things happen and there is no way to plan for them. Even if the Lifeguards and Kayaks were still there it would have taken at least 20 to 30 mins to get everyone back out there and ready to go. I'm super bummed that the swim was cancelled but I  think they made the best call. When this happens there are always people that will be upset no matter what....The only thing I would have done differently is offered a set number of first come first serve deferments for those who wanted to just do White Lake II....Other than that I say Cudos to Benji and the rest of the Set-Up crew!!!!!
