Who all is in for this? It's right around the corner.

After my swim performance this past weekend, I'm thinking I may need to add a few more wetsuit swims prior to the race. If anyone is hitting up the loca lakes (raleigh) , please post up!

I hope everyone's training is going well!

I am racing on 5/7, this will be my first HIM.  I have not had an OWS this year, but would love to get out there get my face in the water before race day.  I live very close to centennial campus, has anyone ever done OWS in Lake Raleigh other than the Triangle Ortho Event?

I'm in.  I rode the White Lake HIM course on Saturday.  It was my 2nd time riding the course this month.  Also got in an OWS yesterday (1.25 mile - not at White Lake).  Looking forward to May 7th, my first HIM!

Bike is fast on the way out, lots of cross drafts on the way across, and then headwind on the way in...all while enduring the tar strips on the road...

Yeah, make sure your bottles are secure. The first couple of miles have some severe bumps in the road and people lose bottles every year. The expansion gaps on the way back in are a real mental test.

This will be my first HIM, so I have a question about what is the best plan for getting down to WL.  I am coming in on Friday, the question is what time?  Should I plan to get down there around lunch time and just relax or is that unnecesary and get down there sometime after work on friday?  Thoughts?

I would say if you can make it on Friday, that would be good.  You don't have to get there super early, I would just make it to packet pick up on Friday.  That way you don't have that to worry about on Saturday morning and you can also get a feel for the layout of the race site (if you've never raced at White Lake before).

Uhm, yes they do! My 44Oz aquacell came flying off at mile 6 of the bike...makes for a loooong day when you primary bike nutrition is gone right away.  They don't give out gels on the bike course (at least they didnt in the past 2 years) but there are water handoffs at mile 18ish, 35 and 50 (ish). The route IMO is flat and pretty boring and there has been a wind both times I have done it. Don't get too excited if your bike average is super fast for the first 20 or so miles...it is a mostly circular route so if you have a tailwind in the beginning there is payback at the end.

yep..I always have a sweet out going speed, even in my training rides...coming back is all mental. Tough bumps, headwind, low speed, day's hotter at that time...ugh

remember your sun tan lotion!!! I got my 1st bake of the season on that training ride and it was kinda overcastish

Ain't that truth!  I remember hitting right around a 22mph pace the first hour and thinking this flat riding was awesome...and then we turned into the wind.  Ugh.

And yes, remember Scotties suntan tip.  I got absolutely fried on my easter ride Sunday.  Had my tri top on (which has a very narrow back panel) and now I have purple wings!  I got no less than 5 comments from strangers at the pool yesterday, ranging from "Ouch!" to "You ever heard of sunscreen?" and a "Holy Crap, that hurt?" from the old naked guy in the locker room!

What did you do the old naked guy to make him say that!? Cummon, fess up!

I think the thing with WL is also that neither the bike nor the run have ANY shade. None. Absolutely nothing (well, there is a tree that casts some shade at mile 4 of the run. But only between 11:15 and 11:20- :-)). So you bake. And then you bake some more.

Several members form my Tri Club will be there as volunteers.  I'll be on the bike route someplace handing out water bottles.

Maybe I should make a sign?  Hmmm... I'll have to ponder that.

x2.

Maria,

If you are at the mile 45 water stop and have a sign, I know it will be very welcome.  As I found out on my training ride last weekend, by the time you get to that point you need a "pick me up"!!

I can have a wah wah wah buttercup sign for the kayak on the lake.

So I'll say it now.. if you need help and see an orange kayak go to the front or back. if you come to the cockpit, I'll whack you on the noggin to keep you from putting me in too.

Otherwise. I'll see you all next saturday.

Louis. hopefully I'll see you again. Even though you'll only be a colored cap swimming by. Anyone want to meet me after to give me any pointers before my race sunday?

But keep in mind that one hot day (or one COLD night) has a huge impact on that lake.

Not doing it this year. I did it the last 2 years and I ain't stoopid enough to do it again! Tongue out Seriously though, have fun there. There's always a great buzz at that race.
