I went out for my first time on my first road bike this Sat and by about the end of the ride (10 miles) my hands were numb and my butt bones were very sore. I also went riding this morning as well and the same problem exists.

My question is will the numbness and soreness go away with time or is it just something that I need to get used to?

By the way I do wear gloves and I have the padded bike shorts.

Thanks in advance for the replies.

You will build up tolerance with continued riding (Ride Lots!), so give it a little time. Has your fit and position on the bike been checked by your LBS or some other knowledgeable third party?

I find my hands get numb if I lean on them too much, particularly if I ride in the drops for an extended period.  Try to shift your weight off of your hands by engaging your core muscles.

You might be leaning on your hands too much when you ride.  I used to have this problem when I first started, and it was cause I was putting too much weight on my hands.  Also, move them around.  Change positions.  That was another thing I did.  I'd ride and I'd never move.

As far as the seat, you have to build up some tolerance, but on the other hand, you may want to go for a different bike seat.  If it's uncomfortable at 10 miles, you're probably ok.  If it's downright painful, then you should probably start shopping for a new seat.

Shouldn't he ride the bike at least a week before shopping for a new seat?

Why Bear?  Some people would rather shop for Tri toys than race! (let alone train)

As I was informed on my FIRST 100 mile ride on Saturday... it's all about TITS.

That's Time In The Saddle, you pervs. You'll find your butt will toughen up... and your hands will benefit from some good gel gloves.... try getting a pair of GOOD bike shorts... (they may be pricey, but you will get your money's worth out of them, and your butt will thank you) I recommend Pearl Izumi... Ultrasensor or Microsensor. They are amazing.

Then, go out there and RIDE LOTS. You'll love it once you've got the right equipment.

I am new to cycling, riding a 12 year old road bike that had its original saddle. When I first starting riding, man was I sore. I toughed it out for the first few rides and then threw in the towel and went to my local bike shop for help.

First thing they did was give me a proper fitting on the bike. Then they suggested a gel "starter saddle" -- in this case a Serfas RX. This would allow me to get use to riding with greater comfort and then I could "graduate" to more of a racing style saddle. This has worked like a charm for me. I rode 12 miles yesterday and feel great today! Best ~$40 I've spent so far on equipment.

JKat - I agree with the other replies: 1) you have to move your hands around & gloves should help. I recently bought a new handlebar (k-wing by FSA) which gives a flatter-based top & an extra hand position. They're carbon & very comfy; 2) yes, cycling is a constant state of getting used to sitting on the seat. It does take time, you could try a new saddle (but you have to remember that there's always a break-in period, so it's hard to tell immediately). Perhaps, your seat position is off, causing you more hand pressure and derriere pain than necessary . A professional bike fit may be the most helpful. Good luck!

Yes there is no substitute for TITS but don't forget the A.S.S. (Aerobic Strategies for Sprints).
T and A for proper bike training.

Not necessarily - the seat that came originally w/ my bike felt a lot like sitting on a knife blade the first time (and only time) I rode it - it was hugely painful.  I immediately switched out seats and was much more comfy (although still uncomfortable till I built up some saddle time.)

Well then why not go out and buy a new bike, since this one is obviously causing him discomfort? Shouldn't one allow for an adjustment period first? Not everyone has unlimited resources where they can replace everything that causes them discomfort immediately.

So overall my best bet would be to give it time. As for the fitting of the bike, my LBS did a basic fitting and then said that Ii should ride it for about 3 weeks and then come in and tell them what is going on and they will then make the proper adjustments.

Someone also suggested Gel gloves, well I bought a pair of Pearle Izume's and they work fairly well. But here is another question, if you are racing and you are doing T1 do you really have time to put gloves on and if not shouldnt you not get used to it? Please advise.

Give it a little time Josh, at least the three weeks and the second fitting, before you go out and spend anymore money.

Gel gloves will help marginally.

In T1 you have time to do anything you damn well please, just may not be the best use of your time. Even the Pearl Izumi's may not be the best thing to swim and run in, once you adapt a little youmay want to tri some tri shorts.

I had a very similar problem after buying my first road bike. My shoulders were sore and my hands got numb. After adjusting the seat and buying a pair of gloves, the problem went away. I would definitely make sure you've had a proper bike fitting. The angle of your body can put alot of extra weight on your hands and arms.

As for the sore butt, that will just take time, although a seat cover could also help.

I'm also a big advocate of TITS. The more TITS the better. When you get aero bars, you really don't need the gloves because you aren't putting pressure on your hands. I still use mine in training though for the cotton terry on the back of the thumb. They also give you some padding when you fall.

You're missing my point here which is that if you are sitting on a bike seat which feels like it's splitting you in two - it's probably the seat and not the rider.  All I'm saying is that I switched out the seat that originally came on my bike (after riding and deciding that if THAT was how I had to feel riding a bike, I was never getting on again) for a not-too-expensive slightly more padded seat and immediately felt a huge difference in my comfort level on the bike.

IMO, if you are having real serious pain (not DISCOMFORT) from something on your bike, and you've only ridden it for a short ride, say 5 miles or 20-30 minutes - there is a problem somewhere that needs to be corrected.
