Kansas City Corporate Challenge

Overcast
Total Time = 1h 04m 43s
Overall Rank = 86/323
Age Group = W30-39
Age Group Rank = 3/42
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:40, ate some Cheerios, and checked the weather (there had been storms forecasted) and loaded up the car. 435 was closed on the way to the park, so I had to take a long detour, but still made it in plenty of time - actually got a great parking spot. Had a banana as I arrived, then rode my bike the .75 mile to the transition area and checked in - I did packet pickup today as I completely forgot about it yesterday. Luckily, they let you do that for this race. Visited the potties, then chatted with Monty & Eric. Had a granola bar and that was it.
Event warmup:

It was on the cold side and I was shivering A LOT before we got in the water. But the water was warmer than the air so it felt good when we finally got in. We had to swim over to the beach on the end of the lake, and then just kind of huddled there until they called our group to start.

Comments:

This was a pretty decent swim for me. I haven't been in open water since IMWI, so I just took it pretty easy. I concentrated on keeping a good line and being steady. Didn't push the pace much and I probably should have, but that's ok. This was pretty easy. Got kicked in the ribs by a breaststroker and got a mouthful of water from someone else who was kind of a thrasher, but since the wave was all women it really wasn't violent at all. And honestly, it was kinda nice, only having to swim for 12 minutes. :)
What would you do differently?:

Think about pulling with my hand - I bet I was leading with my elbow again, without thinking about it... but I was more focused on navigating, so that's ok.

Comments:

I spent way too much time in T1. The only thing that stuck out was that there was a ton of grit on my feet from the parking lot and I wanted to clean it off first so it wouldn't be in my socks. I still missed some little rocks, so probably shouldn't have even bothered for a sprint. I missed out on 2nd in my AG by 16 seconds, so this is pretty much what lost it for me. And I had an excellent rack spot... this should have been 1:30, tops... although to be fair, it did include a pretty good run up from the lake.
What would you do differently?:

just be faster

Comments:

I'm not really where I want to be bike-fitness-wise right now. I should have been out on the road a lot more earlier in the year. But I averaged around 18 mph and this is a really hilly course, whereas my other rides recently have been in the 15.5-16 range on much flatter courses, so I'm happy with my performance.
It still frustrates me that people just don't get that whole "stay to your right" concept. It's not hard, but so many people think it doesn't apply to them. Just because you are going to pass someone slower in a minute does not mean you should be in the middle of the road because there could very well be even faster people coming up behind you that need to get by. Seriously, I saw not one single person look behind them to see what was coming during this entire race - and believe me I was looking. (AND looking behind myself, LOL) When there's a course with lots of hills, I think that makes this kind of behavior especially dangerous (even more so when this is Corporate Challenge and lots of the people aren't very experienced bike handlers!). Still, it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be. ok, rant over. :)
What would you do differently?:

Be in better shape! And I really, really should learn to jump on and off the bike. That would've saved a good 10 sec.
Transition 2
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

I was one of the first people back to the rack, so no problems there. I just took off my helmet, changed my shoes (decided to not mess with the little rocks in there since it would take too much time), grabbed my belt and ran.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - I was glad I could keep this under 1 minute.
Run
  • 20m 9s
  • 2.4 miles
  • 08m 24s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt good from the get-go, and I knew I was running faster than my usual pace (10:30 range). I always run better off the bike! I decided to keep it in the Z4 range as much as possible, since this was a sprint tri after all. Felt strong the whole time.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - I did my best here.
Post race
Warm down:

After crossing the finish line, I got chocolate milk, a couple cookies, and part of a banana & orange. Then just walked around and stretched. There isn't much in the way of post-race entertainment at KCCC, but that's ok. I found Monty and chatted with him a bit - always nice to have a friend to talk to! I ended up leaving shortly thereafter, before they posted results, because I was getting cold again.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim technique, bike fitness, and silliness in T1

Event comments:

It's been a couple years since I did a sprint tri. I ended up picking this over IMKS 70.3 (held the same day) because this one was free through work, and KS was $250. The IM Corp has enough of my money already! Despite not really wanting to do the race (almost everyone I talked to this morning has been hoping it would be stormed-out), I ended up having a good time. It's actually nice to go balls-out at a sprint. Maybe next year I'll do some more of these instead of the long distance races. Anyway, it was fun, and I picked up some points in the KCCC for my company, so it was a good thing to do.

Nice race today Linda! Most of those people that frustrated you on the bike have to be semi truck drivers! They PO'd me today also. It was just like driving on I-35, 70, or 80 going up a hill, and a semi truck driver who is going 1/1,000 of a mph faster than the truck in front swirves into the left lane going 60 mph, 20 ft. on front of you, while you are going 78 mph? I just don't get it. I yelled at three people today!

The biggest gripe of the day. Some nimrod newbie took a friend of mines shoes for the run because he couldn't find his shoes? What? Come back? And you justify that in what way?

Josh Wolf probably would have finished 1st over-all today if it wasn't for the idiot who doesn't know the rules! How would you like to have him for a neighbor?

I still have not figured out or heard how Josh finished. I do know he was is T2 for 17 minutes!
