Subject: Gel Flask?

Wanted to get some opinions for a gel flask if they exist. With HIMs I usually get by with some shot blocks and/or powerbar gels. I find that for long rides training for IMC it is a pain to carry all that stuff (and expensive!). Is there such a thing as gel flasks where I can just dump a bunch of gel into it? Also on the same topic, it is expensive to buy the gel packs, is there a mix of some sort to make gels?

Thanks!

My wife has a couple gel flasks for her Nathan Belt. They just have a different opening in the top.  Also, our local running store has big bottles of gel, GU, I think.  It is a bit less expensive than buying a bunch of packs.  Check your local Running Store of TRI Shop.

Yes, they exist.  They even come with bike mounts if you desire.  The gel can be bought in bulk.

Hammer makes a gel flask that also comes with a mount for your bike.  I put the First Endurance Liquid Shot flasks in it on the bike and it works great.  Have never lost one even on rougher roads.

I bought one mostly because I found it frustrating to always run out of the little packets. Its also very wasteful. I bought a fuel belt one that carries 6 oz, I normally put 4 or 5 in it plus some water to dilute it a little.

just be sure you really like the gel flavor and it sits well before buying a big bottle of it.

You can buy them filled and then buy a bigger jug of it to refill it. Vanilla is my favorite. The EFS drink mix is also great stuff.

I bought a FuelBelt flask that mounts on my top tube. I had planned to use it in a century a couple of years ago. Unfortunately, the temperature was in the low 50’s and the gels became too viscous to get out of the flask. I ended up about sucking my eyeballs out of my head trying to get to the gel inside. I’ve gone back to using packets ever since.

Thanks! The above looks, I will try that for my next long ride. Seems nice to just put one or two in the back pocket.

Hammer Gel Flasks are about $2 and work real well. They hold up to 5 gel paks worth of gel.

Remember that it's all going to be somewhat expensive unless you make your own from scratch (which isn't hard actually).

Better to use what you're going to race with - IMC is powerbar gels and perform so if you're going to use course stuff you should test with those. Otherwise pick and train with what you're going to race with.

I just ordered some of that EFS stuff to try out. Powerbar gel was ok on last him but it's pretty gross IMO.

In my HIM's, I've always carried gel flasks. I keep my nutrition simple. Two flasks on the bike, two on the run. For an Oly, I carry one for bike, one for run. They fit nicely in my tri top pockets. I mix them with three parts gel, 2 parts water and figure this meets my calories at one flask per hour. I've seen the flasks for as much as $4 each in local stores but ended up buying a box of them direct from Hammer at half the cost. They throw a ton of samples in.

Local LBS carries GelBot  Can have gel inside your water bottle in it's own cavity,  suck on it to get the gel out, pull the tab to drink whatever you're running there.

Best part is, no extra mounting, or digging or whatever for a gel flask, if you already run a bottle mount!

x2.  And you can buy a 26 serving bottle of gel for around $20 at most tri shops.  Hammer apple cinnamon is my choice.

When it's cold, put it inside a piece of clothing.  Jersey pocket works just fine for me.  Put it in upside down.  Then just squeeze.  (Despite their marketing, I use Hammer gels.)  I've never had a problem down to 30 degrees.

Local running stores are starting to carry Hammer gel in the larger containers, too.

So 4-5 gels and a bit of water in each? Obviously rest of cals on course, but do you carry any other food? Pickup a 2nd flask on full im bike special needs?

I also use flasks for long training rides and just use the gel of your preferance.  If you buy the gels by the box (usually 24 gels per box) then the price becomes reasonable.

I've tried the 26 serving jug that Hammer offers...but I prefer to buy individual packets (by the box) instead now.  I like the option of just taking 1 or 2 gels if I'm going out on a shorter ride rather than having to putting just 1 or 2 ounces of gels in a flask.  You can always fill the flask then save the rest for later...but I try to avoid it.

I have an additional question and apologize if I hijack the thread for a post or two. I have been trying honey molasses and salt mix and really like it.....my only issue is with the fuel belt gel flask it is way too slow to come out of the (water bottle like) nozzle? Anyone have any suggestions on which flask has a bigger opening?

Apple Cinnamon is pretty darn good... raspberry not bad either. Yep, $20 for a "tub", jug or whatever you call it (26 servings).

mix it with water.  I usually dilute my flask with 4 ounces gel to 1.5 ounce water.

x2 what he said.  I have the hammer flask and it fits 5 gels.  I mix it with a little water and it goes down the hatch quickly and easily.  The bike mount is VERY handy and frees up the bento for other "stuff".

If you are running in clothing/shorts with no pockets, Hammer also has clip on pouches for the gel flasks...BTW Huckleberry is by far my favorite flavor and it is a bit thinner than some.

https://guenergy.com/store/gear/accessories/flask-bike-mount.htmlThi... a very secure mount. I layer 5 gels and mix a little water in between each layer to make it flow better. Water seems to be the key. When I say layer, I mean that put in pineapple roctane, then a bit of water, then a plain or vanilla, then a bit of water, back to pineapple roc ...... You get the picture.I've always preferred the foil packs to the bulk jugs for variety. I get really tired of one flavor. Plus there is less product waste when I just want one or two tells for training or an oly. To me, it's less wasteful in that respect.Disclaimer, I'm a gu ambassador, I may be a little bias, but I've tasted all the other gels, including making my own. For me, gu and gu flasks are the ticket.
