Subject: Rookie mistake and lesson learned today!

In the middle of a planned 30 mile ride today and got a rear flat.  No big deal I’m carrying a spare tube and Co2 cartridge.  10 minutes later I’m back on the road again.  5 minutes after that another flat rear tire!  Now I’ve got a problem.  12+ miles from home, no spare tube, wife is halfway across the country and the majority of my friends are out of town.  I get all the way to the S’s on my cell phone book before I find someone that is in town over the 4th and willing to come pick me up.

Lesson learned – when you get a flat, take the tire completely off the rim and check the inside of the tire for the offending object!  When I got home sure enough there was a shard of glass imbedded in the tire that punctured both the 1st and the 2nd tube.

When I repacked my saddle bag with a new tube & Co2, I also shoved a couple Wet Nap packages in there as well.  I ruined my grip tape on that 5 minute ride after repairing the 1st flat.

Hey, at least you had your cellphone with you.  Woulda sucked hitching a ride with the creepy guy in the white van to get home.  Cool

That is a good pointer about the wet wipes that I hadn't thought of.  I have white grip tape on my bike and that would be nasty after a flat.

No need to take the tire off of the rim.  I always run my fingers inside of the tire to feel for anything.

Touch works better than site as sometimes you might have picked up a wire that you can't see very well.

Good idea on the wet naps!

I'm sorry your ride was ruined, but I'm glad you found someone to rescue you.

I carry 2 tubes (I have 2 tires) and 3 cartridges.

and cellphone, credit card and cash - just learned that one of the bike shops actually does ROAD SERVICE!!!! (for a fee duh) - one of my teammates had a side wall blow out yesterday when we were training - learned the dollar bill trick for that but really like that they brought out a tire for her!

I work in a hospital, so I have snagged a couple of the really sticky "sticker patches" they use for doing EKG's, minus the metal snap. Have a couple just incase I need to patch over a pucture hole while on a ride! A dollar bill works good to.

I think with glass, as is the case here, sight works better than touch as you run the risk of cutting yourself with running you fingers along the inside.

good thing you guys with the dollar bill aren't Canadian.  ha.  What also works is taking an old tire and trim it down and file it down so it is not an edge anymore and always have one in your gear bag.

I also flatted today at mile 10 of 40.

I carry 1 tube, 2 CO2 w/ inflator, 1 patch kit, 1 quick link, 1 multi tool in my saddle bag. I also carry my phone and sometimes $$$.

Quick tip:  I don't carry a tire iron.  I use the lock end of my skewer.

I hate that uneasy feeling for the remaining ride after you have already flatted.

Double flatted on the MTB a month ago.  Had to call the EX to come get me.......fun.

I've been doing it this way for 25+ years without a cut.  The trick is to run your fingers lightly and patiently  inside the tire.

I've found thorns, glass, and wire (from a blown out truck tire) without a cut.  This is one of my tricks for getting a tube changed in a couple of minutes.  That and a Crank Bros. Speedlever.

The last time I replaced my tube, I cut several squares of different sizes from it and carry them instead of the dollar bill trick.  I actually just gave one to a fellow rider the other day and it worked perfectly.

Use the wet naps to clean up your hands afterwards.

after changing the flat your hands will be really dirty.  If you have light colored grip tape it won't be that way for long with your grubby hands.

Dilute Simple Green on an old washcloth usu cleans grip tape pretty well.

Rather than try to clean dirt off my hands, I have my tube in a sandwich baggie along with disposable plastic gloves.  Park sells some quality ones fairly cheaply, any hardware store has the Stanley painter's gloves.

But of course your chain should always be spotlessly clean.  You do clean it before and after every ride, don't you?

Geez, doesn't anyone carry a patch kit and know how to use it? Sure, putting in a new tube is easier, but when you're out of tubes, patching works pretty well. I've done it too many times to recall over the years. Plus, a patch kit takes up very little space.

Yes I carry a patch kit along with a spare tube. Only use the patch kit on a second flat.

Spare tube and patch kit are a must.  I always carry a few dollars too. Mostly they have been used for sidewall cuts.  Gotta be prepared.  There's nothing worse than begging spare parts from someone else to make it home.

That's why bike shorts should always be black.

Second that on carrying a "boot" - an old trimmed down tire. Much sturdier than a wet nap, dollar, Gu wrapper, etc.
