recently someone mentioned to me that they've been drinking coconut water as part of their post workout routine...anybody here have any experience with coconut water and see any benefits from it?

Yep. Works wonderings for post workout. Also great to drink the day before a race/event. I can vouch for that this past weekend

I tried some at Costco cause, well, it was free.  Gross.  I spent the rest of the trip at Costco trying to find other things to sample to get the taste out.

I find that different brands differ in taste, and most have different added flavor options. Coconut water is an excellent recovery drink, has more potassium than Gaterade and is easier on the stomach.
I tried VitaCoconut and liked the pinapple flavored one. Tried the acai/pomagranite one...yuck! Plain was ok, but I wasn't impressed.
I should put that I used to HATE coconut, but am trying to like it since it is so good for you and I like having a more natural option than G2.

Substitute it for plain water the next time you make rice. Delicious.

In some folks it acts as a laxative, so try it out on a shorter run 1st.

I used it in smoothies with banana, mango and pineapple and a splash of coconut milk and crushed ice as needed and it was very good.

Not so much post-workout since it doesn't have protein, but it's an awesome electrolyte-replacement drink for long workouts. WWII medics here in Southeast Asia used to use it to boost blood volume in wounded soldiers because of its isotonicity. Depending on the coconut, its sugar content may be high enough to use as nutrition as well.

I don't know about the dif brands in the U.S., but try to get something that's as close to coconut water as possible (main or one of only a few ingredients). Here, I just get someone with a machete to cut open a coconut although we do have our own coconut-water based sports drink called Hydro.

Is the laxative issue the same with coconut water as it is with coconut milk? I have wanted to try the water before but am worried it would make me sick.

In addition to post workout, it's nice for pre-workout hydration. Tons of potassium and trace minerals to reduce cramping.

Coconut water really upsets my stomach. The Zico that they've been giving away at events just tasted horrible. They had a mango, a pineapple and a chocolate flavor and I couldn't tell between them.

And yes, they acted as a laxative. Glad I was close to home.

I bought some mango flavored, I think Zinco, from Trader Joe's--it was GROSS. I may try a different flavor because sometimes I am turned off by mango-flavored things anyway.

I too, tried one of the Zico "flavored" coconut waters...I think the one I tried was Berry-Pomegranite.  It was beyond gross!  I took one sip of that stuff and thought I was gonna gag.  I dumped the rest down the kitchen sink.  Will NOT be trying coconut water again anytime soon.

If coconut water doesn't taste like Almond Joy or Mounds, I think I'm out.  A buddy of mine swears by it for what that's worth.

The mango flavored coconut water is disgusting, and I NEVER complain about foods and will eat/drink just about anything. Regular coconut water isn't bad (to me), but I can see why most people would dislike it. I use it for pre-workout hydration, doesn't upset my stomach or anything, and I actually use a good amount of coconut oil (instead of butter) on my toast/waffles. Neither are very strong in coconut flavor (compared to a real coconut or even "fake" coconut like in candies).

With Yanti on coconut water being best in its original form. Machete option available roadside here in Vietnam as well. There are actually two kinds of coconuts, "drinking coconuts" and "eating coconuts". The former is okay when chilled after a hot bike ride, but honestly, doesn't really taste like anything to me. Would assume that's what they're using to make the sports drinks. The latter has a jellylike consistency and tastes like coconut; it's slightly sweet and nutty. I'm not sure it's available fresh outside of the tropics. Wicked good when scooped out and mixed in a blender with ice and strong black coffee--I have trained the smoothie ladies at school to make it for me. This is my personal, sugar-free version of Red Bull--it's gotten me through many a wild afternoon with the kids and post-work swim/bike/run.  Probably a caloric bomb but in my case, that's kind of the point.

I'm glad I saw this thread as it reminded me to try the coconut water I'd bought last week!  I just got back from a run, so I figured it was as good a time as any.  I have the VitaCoco brand (plain) and it's not half bad.   The nutritional content doesn't list much sodium, but plenty of potassium and vit C (fortified).  The ingredients are only coconut water and vitamin C and it says it's not from concentrate.

It's got a slightly sweet taste (really mild) and a bit of a coconut flavor aftertaste.  I don't really like the smell of it, but if it was in a bottle instead of a glass, I probably wouldn't notice it.

Miracle drink?  I doubt it.  A nice alternative to sports drinks?  Sure!

Bonus for me: it's sold out of the vending machine at work so I could use it for long runs after work and not have to worry about remembering to bring in mixes.

We're lucky enough to have plenty of coconuts around here too. I cannot stand the taste of the canned stuff.
