This thread hits home with me since I got my butt kicked on the swim portion on Sunday.

The guy who beat me in my Olympic tri last weekend swam a 16:55.  He's not a pro or anthing

http://www.ncnracing.com/results/raceLSI/LORAINTRI-INTERNATIONAL_OVERALL.HTM

There was no way for me to make up that type of ground on the rest of the course.

I have an appt with a swim coach on Saturday to see what I can work on to get faster.

Hot Runner - 2011-08-25 7:09 AM  (The advanced version of one "60-minute" workout is 5000m long--I'd love to see someone do that!)

I've done this twice and it was straight swimming, no sets or intervals and it hurt like a mo-fo.  I only know of about 5 adults nationally (non AG or elite) swimmers who could do 5Km in an hour as a workout, with intervals and rest and sets.  So, that type of workout is not really for anyone other than the most elite of swimmers.

50X100 @ 1:12 and you got it no problem! Walk in the park. haha

At one point in my life I could do that easy... not now I don't think... I could do maybe 1:15 pushing it and 1:18 pretty smooth.. the first 30 or so wouldn't be bad, it's the last 20 that would hit me hard.... could we fill a pool with sea water and let me use a wetsuit... ;

Hot Runner - 2011-08-25 8:09 AM Back to the original topic, wanted to recommend a book to the OP. One-Hour Workouts (Velo Press) is based on the assumption that you have no more than one hour to spend on your (swim/bike/run) workout, and that you want to get the most out of it. You could easily modify that to 45 minutes by, as some have suggested, doing some of the warm-up out of the pool. I find this book very helpful for swimming as my time is often severely limited by pool hours, rather than allergies. The workouts are divided into endurance, tempo, and speed focus and are very challenging, particularly the latter two--minimal rest and lots of intensity. It's supposedly adaptable to all levels, but seems most suited to intermediate/advanced swimmers. (The advanced version of one "60-minute" workout is 5000m long--I'd love to see someone do that!)

thanks, I will definitely check out that book.

Setting goals based on what an RD represents as a swim course distance seems like a recipe for months--if not years--of frustration to me.  My Oly PR--including a decent run in deep sand--is 24:20...but I know that is an utterly meaningless time.  I can't crack 26 min in a 1500m TT (open turns) in the pool right now and that tells me where my swim REALLY is...and how far off from 1500m that Oly course had to have been.

What it would take to change that 24 min Oly time to a 20 min time is enough swimming that I'd probably lose more than 4 minutes on the field between the bike and run through training time sacrificed to the swim.  But if the OP is secure enough with his cycling and running to spend extended time on a swim focus, then, hey, nothing ventured...

Or a mis-measured course on the short side 20 minutes for a 1300m race isn't too hard to do...
