I was wondering about this on Sunday. The Jamba Juice Mission Bay Tri did not give participent aka finisher medals. All my friends from the LA area thought this was wierd since most tri's in their area give medals. Plus I thought since the entry was $65.00  that the swag bag was kind of lacking.  Just a energy bar, swim cap, t-shirt and deoderant plus entry forms to other races.  Wonder if this is the norm in your area?

Of eight races, over two years, I've only seen TWO give out finisher's medals.  One gave a finisher's towel (wtf?) and all gave t-shirts.  Granted, this year the t-shirts weren't cheap cotton ones, but nice dri-fit type shirts.

And what's up with the deodorants?  I'd rather have a sample of BodyGlide, though that stuff smells worse than my running shoes...

Not around here, the only one I've done that has given a finisher's medal is River Cities, and they gave the medal in addition to a swag bag with stuff valued at ~$200.

Don't really expect it for a sprint, would prefer that they keep the medal/amenities and keep the cost down. But if I'm paying $65, I'd expect more than gatorade at the two water stations on the run segment.

None of the KOZ races (San Diego) has finisher's medals, maybe with the exception of the Reebok Women's tri. I think that is one of the reasons our race fees aren't too high. Compare your $65 to any LA race $85+ and I would take the lower fee and no medal. They do give medals out to the podium places, but no finisher's medal. I didn't look in the swag bag, but I'm pretty sure everything in the bag except the tshirt is donated by the sponsors. I think that is across the board for most races. (I could be wrong on that). Once you get into the Half IM and full IM races I think every race offers a finishers medal but the swag bag still is lacking.

For the most part, the races I've participated in have been small, but that sounds pretty standard.  Diamond in the Rough gave out mugs, which was much more useful than a medal.  Swag bag - tee shirt, gel pack, water bottle, advertising.

My wife makes fun of my race swag bags because the stuff they give out at sporting clays tournaments is head and shoulders above anything I've received.  (And the lunches!!!)

Only finisher medal I ever received was from a half IM.  At that event (Diamondman) the swag included a T-shirt, a water bottle, a few minor samples, and printed advertising matter.  There was also a free box lunch.  At the end of the race though they were giving away lots of free hammer gel, so I stocked up on that.  Still, though not to be greedy, I kind of expected a bit more.

Yea, Tom, I guess they are lower. I was looking at the Catalina race in Nov. $110.00!!! A little much considering your probably going to have to get a hotel room plus the ferry ride over.

The one up here with the best stuff, my opinion, is Brewhouse. Gotta love a nice pint glass after a day of swimming, biking, and running!

Good Luck,

If you get one, it's usually for HIM or IM, not the shorter distances.

Not here in the tri state area either. They just take our money, hand us a bag w/ promotional crap and previous years swag and hope we don't look in till we get home!

It all depends on the promoter.  All the races I have been to were promoted by Somersault and I got a medal for each one!

eight tris, 2 dus, 10 runs = 3 finisher medals. cost of event does not seem to correlate to swag. best swag i've seen so far was for a $40 indoor tri.

It seems to be the exception around here, although not unheard of. Danskin and the TriAmerica series both give out finisher medals.

I wouldn't have thought any of the locally-produced races gave them out until I received one this weekend at the Stonebridge Ranch Tri. Stonebridge even included a nice technical t-shirt in the swag, rather than cotton! This was one of the larger local races this year in the area, as far as I know; although I can't say there is a direct correlation.

Autumn,

Just curious now, which ones gave the medals? I know Brewhouse gives out beer mugs, but with the exception of early registration for the Torchlight, which gets you a technical shirt, the best stuff I've gotten has been some sun screen, a water bottle, and a cheap pedometer. Usually for runs, a t-shirt is about it, and now I'm trying to figure out what to do with those. The only thing I hang on to are my numbers, write my time on the back and put them in my desk.

Good Luck,
See ya Sat!

What LA area races??  I've done Redondo, Ventura (OK, not LA), Long Beach and have Hermosa this w/e.  No finisher medals to be found yet.  Not that I frankly care for a sprint distance.

I've gotten 2 over the past three years and both were for HIMs (Diamondman and Devilman) and both were put on by the same company (Piranha Sports). In 12 + year of running I only got 3 finisher's medals (2 from the Philly Distance Run, and 1 from the Pacific Shoreline Marathon).
My kids got finishers medals for a Youth Tri/Fun run earlier this year (Escape from School Tri by Piranha Sports once again) Only $20 for both kids, medals, T-shirts, best goodie bags all year, and free lunch.

Finisher medals from;

Danskin Sprint

Reebok Sprint

St Anthony's Olympic Distance

super sprint race I did as a team with my son

usually they give one to all kids in kids races.  I take pics of them and put them in my scrapbook.  i finally started that today and have six more races to put on paper, I ran out of paper!!  I got so nostalgic over them that I even wanted to Danskin again, which I didn't even like that much,  to see if I could beat that pathetic time.

I live and race here in SoCal, and have done 10 races this summer. The cheapest entry fee I've paid was $60 for the Camp Pendleton Oly, but every other race was over $80 to enter, and I only got a medal for the Caliman 1/2 iron.
