Subject: Pool Swim and counting laps
On a long pool swim of say 1000 yards or more, what are some of the techniques to keep track of your laps.

It very discouraging in the middle of a swim to forget which lap you are on.

We had this thread awhile ago..some suggestions as I rememebr them

1-There is a lap counter thing you can get that you wear on your finger
2-use you watch
3-count by 100 yard increments
4-Moving the kick board a certainway every ___yards
5-use the tiles on the pool deck to move a counter along to keep track
6-100 bottle of beer on the wall.......take one away every lap

When I was swimming in high school, we would figure out how many letters we had to go through (one for each length or one for each lap) for the distance we were swimming. Then, only think of things that start with that letter during the length or the lap. It doesn't necessarily work much better than counting the laps themselves, but it is much more interesting.

I turn the bezel of my dive watch one click for every 50M.

I alsofind it easier to break a 1000M swim down into shorter legs like 4x 50M 5x 100M etc...

I recall reading an article about a grad student who had developed a prototype of swim goggles that would automatically count each lap as the swimmer approaches the wall.  It may even have been from a link in a BT thread.  Can anyone find it?

counting distance is easier for me.  I'd go nuts counting laps.... so... 50, 100, 150....

Also can try figuring out what your 100 split is.  Mine is somewhere around 1:20-25, so if I get lost I check my time and figure it out from there - i.e., at 600 should be somewhere south of 9:00, etc.

I gave up trying to count, too busy trying not to drown - I just hit the lap button on my watch every 50M.

I use to try and keep track but I do not worry with it anymore. I just swim for the amount of time I said I was going to swim and if I am doing intervals that day I do keep track b/c of the shorter distances.

It works for me.

I count by 50s, up and down. So if it's 1000, I count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

If it's, say a 650, I count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

I saw an old guy at the pool do this so I gave it a try - modified to my own practice. Right now I am swimming 5 - 200's. I set 5 pennies in a pile and move one over after each set. Then the only thing I have to keep track of is 4 laps. Next week I'll bump it up to 4-250's so it will be 5 laps.

I can relate to how discouraging it is to lose count of how many laps you swam. A few weeks ago when I was coming off a cold when I got back to work a co-worker asked how far I swam. I told him it was either 750 or 900 as I had lost track of how many sets I had done - he laughed. Next time in I did the pennies.

At first I thought it must look foolish but then then I said what the heck - I really don't care what anyone else has to think and this works for me.

If you know your avg. pace, and have a pace clock or watch, you can tell at a glance how far you've gone if you can do a little arithmatic in your head.

After 16 years of competitive swimming, 4 of USMS swimming and 7 years in triathlon, I'll take "Pace Clock Math" for 2000, Alex.

Works for me too. I do check the poolside clock to be sure I am on my pace.

What i do is every 4th lap. When you hit the 100 mark do a different stroke like back. Its easy for me since I grew up in a pool. Its also helps loosen up your muscles by changing stroke. Also helps make you a better swimmer the more stroke you know.

I do it the old fashion way.  I pay my 9 year old son $1 to write down the number of laps I do along with the time on the clock.  Guess in the long run it would be cheaper to buy a watch/HRM that has laps on it.  There are times when he wants to swim and won't count for me either.  I generally do the count up and down method then.

Well there isn't anything really wrong with that. Your getting in a longer/better workout. Whoo hoo.

have a workout planned. This workout should have variety - look at my blog for examples. I've been swimming long enough that it isn't a problem counting. I just look at the clock, and think i'm going about 40sec/50m

My pool is a 25m pool so I count down and back as 1 lap then count 5 laps off as set 1, then the next five is set 2 and so on. For me its easy to break the swim count up into 5's.

If I went to a 10 lap set, I find I get forgetful, so I keep it simple

if I swim 5 sets counts, thats 25 laps or 50 lengths of 25m which equils 1250m.

I know it sounds confusing but for me it works.

I think Chris is on the right track.  Look, if you can spend $5K on a bike, you can certainly afford to hire some kid to hold a card underwater letting you know which lap you are on.  I would do that, but unfortunately my pool is a union shop, and I can't get them to start work at 5:45am without paying an exhorbitant amout of overtime.

I've paid neighborhood nine year olds a dollar to do a lot of stuff.....get my keys out of the dumpster, climb in my kitchen window because I was locked out and 9 months pregnant.....9 year olds will do anything for a dollar.

Oh yes, the question about laps. I do everyone in my family's name broken down to four letters (read it on BT). So......Soph, Benn, Pete, Shan, Coco, Mimi (cat and dog included). This helps me keep track of each 100.
