I got so tired of loosing track of my laps. It seemed like the more I concentrated on remembering which lap I was on, the more likely I was to forget. Now I can zone out and forget about counting lapos because I broke down and bought one of these finger counters.

I use my sports watch and hit the split button after every 100.  Sometimes I still mess up counting, but not as bad as I used to!

From the website:
www.printnumber.com website
2. Now, you can try this new and useful product and enjoy your exercise to the fullest. It meets the requirements of most swimmers, runner, joggers, cyclists who swim or run up to 24 laps.

· Count 1 to 8 directly;

· Count up to 16. Remember 1 cycle done, and then add 8 to counter’s amount;

· Count up to 24, Remember 2 cycles done, and then add 16 to counter’s amount.

· So just remember 1 or 2, you can easily count up to 24 laps correctly.

So, you still need to remember a count ... unless you swim 8 laps or less.

I use my watch and try to lap every 100. I sometimes screw up, but it's easy to figure out based on the duration of that lap.

I tried a modified version of the "penny method" a couple of weeks ago by keeping a pile of safety pins and a pill box at one end of the pool. After each 100, I dropped a safety pin into the box. I had 10 safety pins, so when they were all in the box, I knew it was 1,000. The disadvantage is of course a slight pause at the end of each 100 to come out of the water and move a pin.

Couldnt resist......

I used to move one lap line "Disk" (plastic disk on the lane rope) for every 2 laps. Kind of like an H20 version of an abacus.

I guess I got used to counting while I was tired.......dont need the disk trick anymore.

I don't know, I swam distance in high school so I'm used to mile+ warm ups followed by mile+ kicks and mile+ arms. I just usually think of things in 2's. 50's are easier to remember than 25's. When in doubt, do another 100. In races though we used numbers that had orange on the back for the last lap...greatest sight ever.

I do it the old fashion way.  I pay my 9 year old son $1 to write down the number of laps I do along with the time on the clock.  Guess in the long run it would be cheaper to buy a watch/HRM that has laps on it.  There are times when he wants to swim and won't count for me either.  I generally do the count up and down method then.

Chris.

LOL!

I'll pay your 9 year old son to count my laps and track my splits too!  I think you're on to something.

I've been trying to get my wife to do this for months...to no avail.

I use letters in stead of numbers and change letters every 50 yards (or meters). A, B, C, D, E, F, etc.

So when I'm swimming on letter A the entire 50 yards I think of the world Alpha, Alpha, Alpha, and chant it back to myself until it's time for the letter B, which I then switch to Bravo, Bravo, Bravo, then Charlie, Charlie, Charlie, etc.

Using letters and repeating a word that starts with that letter allows me to focus my ADHD mind on it.  If I use numbers I ALWAYS end up forgetting what lap I'm on after about 600 yards.

Tried to hit "lap" every 100 this morning.  Messed up once out of 20.  Did 150 instead before hitting the botton.  So I guess it's not bad.
