The Boardwalk Beach Reort if the host hotel, but don't expect luxury. Super convenient, though.

The Boardwalk Beach Resort is, in my opinion, unfit for human habitation.  It was the nastiest hotel I've seen in a very long time.  I had reservations to stay there for Gulf Coast and promptly checked out upon seeing the rooms.  They do have a brand new condo tower next door which is much nicer (and pricier).

We stayed at the Edgewater Beach Resort this weekend, about 1.5 miles from the race site and is located on the Bike route.

I'm usually not too picky when it comes to hotels, but I think in this situation (doing an IM) I wouldn't mind paying more to be more comfotable.  I'm going ot do some research and see what I can find.  Karl- did you like staying at the Edgewater Beach Resort???

Just returned from IM FL and we stayed at the Gulf Crest. This is just .7 miles from all the race activity and right on the run course. $120/night for a condo on the 15th floor. Unbelieveable! We lived it up. Great balcony, 2 bedrooms, full kitchen, dining room and living room. Oh yeah, a washer and dryer was key also. I highly recommend this place.

have done half there twice and stayed at the Sunbird first year and Moonraker the next. Both are older condos but were pretty good. Less than half mile from race site, nice pool and on the beach. I am gonna look for one of the newer condo's for the Ironman.

JIm- I'm not going to be mad.  They have 2 pools, 2 hot tubs, a kiddie pool, place to grill out, right ont he water....I'm going to be in heaven.  It's along the run course, and she said you can see the siwmmers in the water.  Of course not close up, but still... And they have a Fed Ex service arranged for bike shipping to the condo.

Jim - Just out of curiousity, why would it matter how close you are to "race central?"  Being within a few miles is certainly more convenient than most of the races we do and it still affords easy access. Is there something we need to know?

When I stayed there for Gulf Coast, it was very cool to be able to just walk out of my hotel room, take the elevator down, and be in the transition area in literally 20 steps. Ditto for the swim start. It took all the gut wrenching about having to worry about getting to the race site away. And I'm thinking for IM, the less I have to worry about, the better.

Here's the downside: I spent way too much at the expo because it was *right there.*

At Gulf Crest, for a 3 bedroom/2 bath condo it's $200 a night.  For a 2 bedroom/2 bath, it's $175 a night for those dates.  I already have a condo reserved there since I'm pretty sure that's where I want to stay.  Of course I can always cancel if something better comes along.

Ok...I got it figured out, there is a Walmart down the street. I'm going to drive my RV down and stay in their parking lot for FREE!
Nothing like tailgating
Plus the beach is only a block away!!
I wonder if I need reservations...?

Now that's smart!  Why didn't I think of that?  Oh yeah- because I don't have an RV!

Now I will say that I did not do the race but I was there this year as a spectator.  We stayed at Edgewater in the towers.  It was nice but it was just too far from the race site for us.  I had a friend who was racing and she also stayed at Edgewater and she also felt that it was too far.

We drove to Wal-Mart for the shuttle service into the race area--Front Beach drive is blocked on race morning--the shuttle was to start at 4:30 and at 5:05 we just started walking.  My friend said that it really stressed her that morning.  None of that would have happened if we were closer.

I have heard that the Boardwalk Motel is a serious dump!  However, next year we plan to stay at the Boardwalk Condos.  Being right there would be really great.  That being said, there were several high rise condos also very close.
