Subject: Why I love/hate BTers

Every morning when my alarm goes off, one of the reasons I get up and don't even press the snooze button is that I don't want to disappoint fellow BTers by slacking. Funny how a bunch of people I have never met can have that effect on a person. So I love BT because they help me get my butt off the bed in the morning.

The reason I hate BT? Same thing! Would it kill you to let me sleep in once in a while! Geeeez!Laughing

As a newbie to this forum i give you permission to hit the snooze button tomorrow morning.   Better yet don't set your alarm clock.

WHAT?!?  NOOOO!!!!!

Don't listen to him!  Get your butt up and and RUN to the pool.  Swim for 3 hours and RUN home.  Get on your bike and ride until bed time.  Then instead of going to bed, run to the pool again!  Dont pass go, Dont collect $200.

YOU CAN SLEEP WHEN YOUR DEAD!

And remember we are all here in our Mom's basement drinking coke, eating Twinkies, pretending to be fit on the internet and we are JUDGING!  That's right, we are judging you and if you are not out of that bed by 3:30 every morning, we will find you lacking!

I hate the "sleep when you're dead" line of thinking. You are dead when you're dead. It ain't sleep. And if you don't get proper sleep you will be dead sooner. Proper is subjective for each person, but as much as some want to wear it as a badge of honor, sleep deprivation is not cool.

I realize the details of your post were sarcastic (there is a sarc font on BT), but the general thinking that skimping on sleep is ok is a common misconception.

Some people actually think that way, so I don't fault Brad.  That's why we have the sarc font.

True, seems mostly true, at least in my interactions, for people who are not athletes though.  People who are busy with work, and life and just keep squeezing out sleep.  Most people I have talked to who are serous about fitness in whatever discipline seem to recognize that not only is sleep important but it may be even more important than the training you do.  How does the saying go?  Exercise builds fatigue, Rest builds fitness?  Not that there is anything wrong with a 24 or 48 hour endurance event.  Pushing through occasional sleep depervation is fine once in a while, kind of like a hard race is fine once in a while, but it needs to be recovered from compleetly and is not a training or fitness building tool.

Some of us have mounted our smart phones to our aerobars and are working out while we're reading BT.

I love the commercial line that says, "Strong is what you have left when you use up all of your weak."

That is why you don't hit snooze and you get on the road, on the bike, on the trail, in the pool, etc.

Don't blame others, you are as type A, high drive as the rest of us.

it's even worse over on Daily Mile.  lot's of social interaction on each workout.

If you don't post- it's almost like not showing up to a group run/ride.

I don't think there are too many out there soooo sleep deprived they are about to die. The reality is that most of work full time and have families to take care of. For me missing a little sleep so I don't miss time with the family is the way it has to be. Ask any elite age grouper and I bet most are up early and working out. Using the excuse that you don't want to be sleep deprived is just an excuse to train less.

I am confused by the fun intent of the OP, and the seriousness of the state of sleep deprivation.

I missed my exit on the highway the other day I was so tired. Of course, the lack of sleep was from work, as I did my IM the week before. Couldn't have been that right?
