It seems there are lots of people from all sorts of other cities in the US on these boards. Why aren't there more Hawaii people here? To much surfing and pakalolo?

I wish I could claim Hawaii as my home. Love it there and try and visit every couple of years.

I would ask tritwinmom or Melhndi.  They both live on Kauai, and may not check this thread so often.

I live in Volcano and the VOG is horrible, been driving down to Hilo to bike and run, but it's rough down there sometimes too. It's very frustrating trying to stick to any kind of training plan. I have the Honolulu triathlon this weekend, than the Honu, dispite the crappy air, I feel pretty good. I guess we'll see.....

Best of luck to you!  It's been voggy here, but NOTHING compared to what your dealing with.

The coach to this swim team lives north shore and I know he like to swim Hanalei bay there are others, I live in Lihue so it may be tough for me to meet to swim on those dates. The waters should be calm, have a great trip.

kapolei,

My home is in the Islands, but my job currently has me living in the Philippines. I watched my brother finish in Kona last October for the second time and decided maybe I'd like to give this sport a try. SOoooooo, I found this website, started on the beginner program and tomorrow I'm doing the Honululu Triathlon.

I'm excited, but I'd be lying if I said there wasn't a little trepidation creeping in!

Speaking of the vog, I don't ever remember it being this bad on Oahu!

Come to Pahoa and ride to the water. You can park at Pahoa Market Place and go toward Kalapana or Kapoho, it is a decent loop and there are hills on either side. I am not noticing the vog by me at all, so it has to be better than Hilo.

How did Honolulu go for you, that was my first tri and it was a nice venue?

I did OK in Hon. 7th in my group. Riding hills seems to be really paying off, riding on a flat course was a cruise. Today I rode from my house on Wright rd, to Richardsons beach and back, I'm a little sore, but a good sore. I will be in kona this weekend so I'll check out the course for the Honu. Hope to see you there.

How's Honu training going with all that vog?

I live in Kailua-Kona and the vog is very bad here. I've been going up to Hapuna as much as possible and training on the Honu course. But otherwise we're stuck with training in the vog or not training at all. Hopefully there are no long-term effects from it.

Well, How did you do?
Besides the wind kicking my butt, I was also one of the many that got flat tires. I did finish however... I loved it and can't wait till next year. Next on the calander is the Kona marathon June 29th. My first marathon.
Maybe some of us Big Island BTers could meet up some time for a bike ride or something.

I had a really fun race at Honu.  I finished in 5:45, not too bad for my first HIM.  I haven't decided if I'm going to do the Kona Marathon this year yet.  I ran it last year, weighing 205 and won the Clydesdale division because I was the only one in it!  I'm 175 this year so I won't be defending the heavy weight title

Wow, 2 years ago I was 235 pounds.

The Honu was my first half as well. I finished a slow 6:29. But I was really psyched out about that run, which wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I'm signing up for the marathon. It'll be my first marathon in 31 years.

Congrats on your weight loss!  Why not do the marathon?

It depends if I get can get vacation from work.  I am a fire fighter/Paramedic on the Hilo side and there is a shortage of paramedics right now.  I like the Kona course though, it's fast except coming back up the energy lab.

Randy-

I don't think you can have a "slow" first HIM.  It's all about the experience, right?  We'll be even faster next year!
