Randy-

I don't think you can have a "slow" first HIM. It's all about the experience, right? We'll be even faster next year!

I guess that's true since my no. 1 priority was to just finish. It was just slower than I had trained for.

Yeah, but it was a tough day for just about everyone.  I put it in cruise control on the run, the tough part was, I came in third for my big island ag, and I beat the other 2 guys to T2.  They only gave out 2 slots at the banquet and I missed it by 2 minutes (first beat me by 8), but I'm still hoping for a call if someone pulls out.  There's always next year.

I didn't qualify for a BI resident this year -- only lived here 2 and a half years. But I would have ended up 5th for big island residents if I had qualified. I was even with the second guy to qualify in my age group in the swim and bike but my run killed me and he had an excellent run. But I'm working on it.

Congrats!  Are you going to post a race report so we can read about your experience?

It was great, a little humid, overcast but no where as hellisly hot and windy as the Honu. first 18 miles were better than I expected, no hot spots on my feet and no knee pain. Around the 18 mile mark my hips started getting sore but nothing that would keep me from finishing.
Also got to meet fellow BTer, kinaiahi.
Really inspired me to start adding more 20 plus mile runs into my training.

Hello everyone   I am a beginner beginner.  My name is Linh, just wanted to introduce myself.  I live next to magic's in Kona.  I'm not sure if I will be doing either the lava man or the Kona marathon next year.  But will be training for both starting Monday.  Just still looking up sites and info on training.  I've started a lot of things and never finished them.  I think if I finish either one and finish an Iron Man, I will never feel mediocre again.

Linh,

Welcome to the triathlon community. This site is excellent for everything that you will need from information to gear. Just remember when starting out in triathlons, be patiant and prgrees and your pace, you can injure yourself if you take on more than you are ready for. If your thinking about Ironmans then you need to get in years of training first. Again welcome and enjoy......

Welcome Linh.

You should check out Team Mango. They have free races every now and then, I think they do 2 in February to help with your final Lavaman Prep. I am planning on doing a sprint with them on 11/2.

Good luck with your training. Find a training plan and follow it, consistency is the key with getting into shape.

Hey everyone and Aloha! I've been a BTer for almost two years now, but this is my first foray into the forums. I was suprised to see how few Hawaii BTers we have registered here We live in such a great state for this sport.

Just wanted to say hi and introduce myself to the rest of the island ohana. I live on Oahu and this will be my third season doing triathlons. My goal is to go to the Big Island next year to do the 70.3.

Good luck to all and happy racing!

Hey Sam!  I TOTALLY agree with you.  I have been searching high and low for some locals but there aren't a lot here.  I also am on Oahu ~ in case the Schofield Barracks didn't give it away!

Volcano, Big Island. All signed up for Lavaman and the Honu, not sure about Honolulu triathlon. Just bought a brand new Cervello P2C. Been swimming at Kawamoto pool "avg temp 67%". God, I love Kona. Looking foward to getting in some nice long rides.

I'm planning to come to UH in August to finish my grad degree...  I've done two races on Oahu and really enjoyed both of them - even PR'ed for my 5K!  Anyways, see all of you out there in the fall!
