i have road id, i have the old kind which just cuts your skin.  I have a tri and a road bike so i made little cards with my personal info and place them in my bike bag in case anything happens, cause i forget to grab my road id from my run bag or my bike bag.  Now i only have to remember it for my runs

hk94 - 2006-02-02 8:11 AM For all of you concerned about the SSN - I work in security and have done quite a bit of anti-identity theft work in my career. Now I'm not advocating that you put the SSN on your ankle if you're uncomfortable with it, however, those numbers are so easy to get these days. Google yours one day if you are ready for a shock.

"Your search - xxxxxxxxx - did not match any documents."

Tried multiple forms of it.

My concern about the SSN number wouldn't be so much that I'd be attacked or someone might strip it off my unconscious body, but rather that I'd leave it at the gym by accident, or it might be stolen with my bag out of my car, or something along those lines.  Kind of like don't write your pin number down and stick it in your wallet.  You don't plan to lose your wallet, but you never know.

Regarding ankle vs. wrist for finding information, general passerbys might not think of it but I'm pretty sure that most emergency responders are trained that ankle id's are a possibility on athletes.  Anyone out there who can confirm this?  Smokeater?

It'll be found when they remove your clothing and/or are ensuring circulation isn't restricted.

If it's attached to you, it'll be hard to miss.  If it's on a card in your bike pouch, it's less likely to make the trip with you in the ambulance.

So this post helped me make up my mind. My ankle ID will be coming in 2-8 days. I was leaning toward the ankle anyway and it seems like the popular way to go. I also liked the idea of donating my organs when I am done using them. It is going to say:
Charles Jon Robbert
Holland Michigan
Wife's Phone
Parents Phone
No allergies; No med hx
Give organs (When dead)

Thanks for the help

I have shoe pocket (that came in a bag of freebies) on my right running shoe that I keep $5.00/key in when I go for a run. When I started running around my neighboorhood (~1.5 miles on roads where the cars go 45+), I started keeping a waterproof 8.5x5.5 sheet of paper with

Name
Address
Insurance Company
Insurance number
Blood Type
3 Emergency Contacts (father, mother, brother)

I need to update the card to reflect changes in address and will include a family friend on the list of emergency contacts.

I probably ought to do the same when I go biking - normally I carry DL and insurance card in bike pouch...

I put full name, city and state. 2 emergency contact numbers, asthmatic, no rx allergies. I was going to put "organ donor" but thought it might be morbid Besides, both my emergency contacts know I'm a donor and chances are good that emergency personel would be able to reach at least one of them.

I've got the shoe ID on my running shoes, a shoe ID on my MTB shoes (they have laces) and I just got the ankle ID for road biking/swimming. I move the one from my MTB shoes to my hiking boots when I hike or backpack.

I have the ankle version. I prefer it over the wrist version becuase, with it's reflective strip, cars or cyclists are more likely to see the reflection from your ankle than from your wrist, especially when approaching from the back.

I don't think it would make a very good chip strap. I would recommend pickup up a neoprene chip strap, it should cushion the shape of the timing chips a littler better. You can find them desoto, your local tri shop, or event expos, sometimes.

I emailed Ron about a program that RoadID offers that gives 10% commission on items bought from www.roadid.com through a link on your website.

With all of the people that seem to be interested, it would make people safer and provide some funds to help support the website.

I think I am going to order one for me and my wife. Also, I think I may give one to my friend who is starting to train for a marathon.

Out of curiosity, I googled mine and no matches were found. I'm actually not that concerned about theft, but just thought I'd check it out.

As long as we are on the topic of identity theft...did you know you can get a free credit report from 3 major agencies for FREE once a year? No catch. http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/edcams/freereports/index.html

I did this today and found a credit card on there that I never applied for. I would have been 15 years old at the time...I entered a dispute on 2 sites so I am hoping it will disappear. Luckily the person with the card has been paying their bill.

Totally hijacking the thread now, but my husband's social security number got assigned twice! We have to call up the agencies and have them put a note in the credit report. It's not a perfect system, but you're on the right track. Check your credit report annually and scrutinize every bank statement and credit card statement.

Topic? I ordered two IDs today. Always was something at the back of my mind, all this talk just pushed it up front. I did not put my SSN on it, btw I thought having "Organ Donor" on the one available line I had left was more important.

My ankle one has my blood type (o-negative, so you'd better find some for me pronto!) and drug allergies in addition to the usual name, city, date of birth, emergency contact info. Which left one line open: "ALL PRAYERS WELCOME."

I used it running, cycling, even swimming sometimes so it wouldn't bother me in races. Never got in the way, gave me some level of comfort.

Then I misplaced it about a month ago or more. Now I go out feeling naked without it, need to find it, am very disorganized for a triathlete really.

Besides all of the important stuff, I put:

It is one of my favorite books and a life motto and somewhat ironic if I was dead.

Yeah, ok, I posted about road ID two months ago and marmaiamthehammerandi'mwatchinghangloosewhenjim'snotaroundtocausetroubledaddy pulled the thread in ten seconds because it was too commercial.

Ok, my whining is over because I do not want to be turned into a minnow.

Seriously, is Ron looking into this?  Should I hold off on ordering so I can do it through BT's website?  Marma?  Ron?  Thoughts?

Do any of you wear yours swimming? Sometimes when I'm swimming I have no ID on me. It's in my locker with my pants, but if I were to be involved in an accident in the pool, would they go looking through the lockers to find mine? Just a thought

actually there is a catch...pulling your credit report will decrease your credit score.

rather just sign up for American Express' credit watch.  any changes to your credit reports and they send you notification of what it is and also help you if your identity is stolen.

I got the ankle band. I already wear a watch/heartrate monitor and a LiveStrong bracelet, so I didn't need to clutter my wrists anymore.

It's been fine. I don't notice it on runs or rides. The really nice bonus for me is that is protects my left ankle from my right running shoe since I seem to always graze the inside of my ankles with the other foot.

I would rather risk lowering my credit score ever-so-slightly by checking my report every couple of years than not checking and finding out later that there was incorrect information (like in my case) that could hurt my credit in the future.

No one should ever be without some sort of ID!
I wear a custom made military dog tag. http://www.imsplus.com/ims22.html They are cheap, extremely light weight, and durable. Tag can have up to 5 lines of information with up to 15 characters per line.

Suggested Info:
FIRST AND LAST NAME
CITY, STATE
BLOOD TYPE
EMERGENCY CONTACT
ALLERGY / MEDICAL INFO

I also have a small yet detailed label strategically taped to the inside of my helmet and 'modified' business card inside my saddle bag.

The backwards alpaca would be happy to be represented! I didn't have any room on mine for a quote
