When it comes to athletics, I was born in the shallow end of the gene pool! I have virtually zero athletic giftings. I got into triathlons because it was an individual sport and I could do it with bringing down the 'team'.

I subscribe to 'brute force' training method. Quite simply, I log as many miles as I can. I hear people talking about swim intervals and running intervals and speed work and spinervals and it's all foreign to me. It amuses me when I read about "5k" pace and 10K pace and marathon pace - I have only ONE pace and that is 10 min/mile. I just go outside and run as much as I can.

I'm training for a HIM in May and my goal is to finish ahead of the street sweeper and at least one other competitor in my Clydesdale/age category.

Anyway, I don't LOOK like a triathlete and I don't train like most of you with all the intervals and speed work and such…but I do enjoy reading about y'all's training exploits!

~Mike (but my biking friends call me 'On-your-left')

If all you ever run is 10 m/m, then all you can ever expect to run is 10 m/m. But, if you're happy doing that, then keep on trucking, baby!

What exactly does a triathlete look like? At the triathlons I've been to, I saw participants of all shapes, sizes, ages, genders, races, body types, hair and eye colors, etc. etc.

Actually, your training approach is consistent with what most coaches subscribe as aerobic base building for most of the training diet so you are not as far out on the fringe as you seem to think. I would not call 10 minute miles brute force though ;-) The only thing you will need to learn is 'recovery' also known as 'rest' or your body will teach you in its own way. Triathletes come in all shapes and sizes, by the way. Good luck on your HIM.

I hope you are right but I've looked at the pictures from last year's GCT 1/2 ironman and let's just say I didn't see many 6'3" 250+ lb men.

RE the 10 min/mile pace....I guess I would rather just run long than run fast. I'm never gonna be a fast runner and I'm ok with that. I'm not fast but I have finished 3 marathon...I guess I'm like a diesal engine.

Love your nick name ( on-the-left ) that suits me as well........keep on going.

Hey, no knocking the 10 minute miles! I'm a horrible runner (to me running feels like being in hell) and I just did a 5k this weekend (the farthest anybody will ever get me to run) and finished in exactly 31:00 minutes. It was a personal record for me, had been doing 11 minute miles beforehand. I don't care if I came in last for my age group, fact is I could hardly run one mile when I started training. I say good for you! At 5'6 ish and 164 lbs I don't look like an athlete at all, much less a female triathlete, but hey at least I'm out there doing it. Plus it is dang hard when you are carrying extra weight on you!

And oh yeah, I use the same training method as you. I have no idea about half the stuff people on this board talk about!

Well, I'm 6'5" tall, 250lbs. So you're not going to be the biggest man at any tri I attend.

You can do this, and don't worry about giving it a bad name, nobody that puts out an honest effort does that.

My forearms are bigger than the legs of the guy who won the sprint tri last fall. (And I'm not nearly as big as some of you.)

Doin' my first HIM this summer too.

It's all waht you are looking to get out of this. You could get faster but maybe the amount of work required is just not worth it. It sounds like you are having fun and that is they key.
In addition, I NEVER judge anyone at a race by the way they look. That way, when that fairly unathletic man/woman kills me in the water or blows by me on the bike, I don't feel bad

Keep up the great work and keep training/racing for the right reasons...yourself.

This is hilarious! Yes, I can relate. My thighs are as big as most elite athelete's waists! I am NOT a Kenyan.

In my first sprint tri I was stuggling on the run and was running next to some old bald guy. He would pull ahead of me and then I'd pull ahead of him...then he'd pull ahead. Finally I pulled ahead and stayed ahead of him. I was so proud of myself for beating this guy. Then, in the post-race awards they said "We like to recognize our oldest participant today who is celebrating his 80th birthday today!" I looked and it was my bald headed running guy. Doh!

It doesn't matter that he was the oldest. You BEAT him! He's lucky you didn't push him down and break his hip. (Just kidding).

You'll do fine. Remember that it's about crossing the line. So many people never even get to the starting line. Go get them!

10 minute mile is not a shameful pace.  That is my goal pace...what I am working toward!  You are doing a great job is that is the pace at which you are starting!

Keep truckin' ahead, "Diesel" (or "On-Your-Left,"...whichever you prefer, but I believe I will call you "Diesel"

I'm not sure how you give triathletes a bad name.  You seemed determined to do it.  You're competing in a HIM, you've run two marathons, and you "have virtually zero athletic giftings".  If that's true, you've been able to do all this because you want to, not because it's been easy.  It sounds like you've really worked hard.  I think that amount of determination and effort gives triathletes a good name.  Good job and keep at it, diesel! (I LOVE that as a nickname!)

Heh heh, I earned the nick-name "freight train" playing Ultimate. Do not cross my path, it takes a long time for me to slow down once I get up to speed (6'3", 260lbs at the time, only 230 now :-)

I'm at 264 today but plan to be under 250 by my HIM on 13 May. When I started my training program 1 Dec '05 I was at 300. I just got back from an 8 mile run in 1:19:53 which means I actually do run faster than 10 min/mile! ;-) In case you missed that joke, I'll do the math for you...if I ran a perfect 10 min/mile over 8 miles, that would be 1:20:00 so I was 7 seconds off my pace.

~Mike

BTW, thanks for all the encouragment! It's good to know there are other big guys/gals tri-ing.

6'1"...260 lbs. (I feel like I'm calling in to ESPN's Dan Patrick show)  I started training for my first tri in September following one of BT's "couch to..." programs and I'll be tickled pink if I can maintain the 10 min/mile pace that I have been able to do so far.  Just keep going at the pace that feels comfortable and take solace in the fact that if we were all stuck on an island without food...it would be the shinny ones that we would eat first!  Ha Ha

I think Daryl Haley was still quite large when he competed in Kona.

Hmm I'm like the mini version of this guy 5'11" 233. I hope some stockiness is not too much trouble. 10minute miles are very comfortable for me as well. I'm doing interval work now and then to get to 9minute miles however!
