All she wants is an iTouch and I'm 100% opposed. If she got one it would immediately be "I want an iPad" plus she already gets too much screen time. Dirt bike was #2 but wife is 100% opposed.

Ideas?? Please!!!!

How old is a tween? I've heard as young as 9 or old as 12.

You sound like us. Our younger kids don't own electronic anything. What do you think about a radio for her room? How do you feel about a shuffle? Maybe you could get her a radio she plugs a shuffle into?

Our 9 year old asked for a sewing machine, not sure if that is up her alley.

Our girls have a nice James Avery charm bracelet and they get a charm for birthday's and Christmas. If she does not have one maybe you could get her the bracelet and a couple of charms.

Any interest in a bike? Scooter? Trampoline? Something that gets her outside and moving under her own power.

I have an almost 8 year old and a 10 year old.  The oldest has our very old I Touch (so old it doesn't even have sound, you need to use earphones) and she likes it but hasn't been abusing it yet.  She got the free texting ap but can only text wen she's in the house so she doesn't do it much.

My oldest only asked for a few things this year - a surfboard, TOMS shoes, an IPhone, an Abercombie sweatshirt, a sewing kit and earrings (just got her ears pierced for her 10th birthday.)

My 8 year old wants all of the above (except earrings) and a compact video camera (see my other thread.)  That might be a good idea for your daughter - the Kodak Playsport is water proof and shock proof.

Does she have a digital camera yet?  How about a subscription to a magazine?  My girls like American Girl Magazine.  It's more about girl stuff than the dolls so my 10 year old even likes it.  They always love craft stuff.  Last year I bought a three drawer rubbermaid type thing from Target and put some drawer dividers in the top drawers.  I filled it with craft supplies like pipe cleaners, markers, glitter, sequins, pom poms, etc.  The bottom drawer I filled with scrapbook paper because they each had one and were starting to get into making pages.

In this case 10. Thanks for the ideas. She has almost everything on your list including the sewing machine and the Mrs and I have been going round and round whether a trampoline is a good idea liability-wise.

I would truthfully tell her that she's not getting the iPod Touch so if she doesn't come up with some other ideas, she's not getting anything.

Things I liked as a girl:  clothes (especially gift cards, Justice is fun), books and jewelry.   I got a "name necklace" for my 10-year old Niece last year and it was really cute.

I also like to get presents that keep on requiring things. You said she has a sewing machine - how about fabric, classes to learn how to make clothes (or whatever), or other sewing tools like a cutting board and rotary cutting tool (useful for many things).

I also second the magazine subscription idea.

I am having more ideas (I have 4 nieces and was once a girl, ha ha):  Travel luggage and accessories, you can never have enough little bags and zippered pouches, a new backpack.  Slippers and pajamas.   It sounds like she gets whatever she wants, so you need to look toward luxury items or things you can have multiples of.

Now, if she's a tomboy never mind, I can't help you.

Trampolene with VERY STRICTand ENFORCED rules - no tricks, (you decide if your comfortable with flips, I'm not). And most important rule NEVER EVER EVER more than 1 person at a time on it. Period. You break the rules you are not allowed to use it again until I determine you've shown the responsibility. And have a net

well, my 7 year old has an itouch ( a gift from one of those over-the-top crazy aunts), and she loves it.  yeah, it's mostly a game thing, but it's great entertainment for long car rides, and the games for it are either free or dirt cheap.  That little girl is a pro at "cut the rope" which requires a lot of puzzle solving strategy- so perhaps a little educational.  Much better than watching TV in my book.

but if you're still opposed to an ipod touch (which I understand), then consider a Kindle.  $79 for the little one- and it might encourage her to read more.

If I had those rules, I never would have gotten on the trampoline.  I used it when I was 10 to learn how to do a flip on my bmx bike.  I don't think there was ever only one person on it.  How do you double bounce without another person or play fun games like crack the egg?

I loved my trampoline I had...but I was in HS.  I also bought it (it was used)

Have you heard of these - I think it sounds pretty cool...and the springs are probably one of the more dangerous points on a trampoline.

Also..to the OP.  Our 10 yr old put a "laptop" and "cell phone" on her list...as she did last year.  She MIGHT be getting my mom's old iphone 3G - which will not be activated, but hope to use it on the wifi at home.  I really like someone's suggestion of classes...check out your local JoAnn's or Michaels' or a local sewing/fabric/machine shop.  It sounds like your daughter has a good amount of "things"...but maybe she should learn how to use her existing things?  (Pot..hey, Kettle...haven't talked to you in a while...I was -and still am - terrible at using the "things" I was given...for more than 5 seconds)  Too bad mom won't let her have a dirt bike...can I have it instead???

My oldest at this age wanted music, soccer gear, and she asked for her eyebrows to be waxed (it's hard to be a girl at this age). She was a very focused, well behaved child so she got what she asked for. The other two are hooligans and wants are negotiated.

We said NO to the trampoline, as we have had people in our small town get into legal battles with other families on medical bills due to a friends friend bringing someone over and it caused a broken leg for one and an arm for the other.  Unless you can monitor it all the time, I would say no.

Now that both are gone, we thought about getting one just to have in the yard to hear them complain about it.

We went with an XR100R and then an XR200R dirt bike.

That is too funny and very true for most all tweens I know (including my daughter).

I'm not much help, our daughter (age 10) is getting a Nook and an iPhone.  If she wanted an iTouch I would go for it in a heartbeat but she really needs a phone for other reasons so we went with the iPhone with lots of insurance and parental controls.

I would get her the ipod touch. I got my daughter one last year, because all the other kids had one. Now it sits on her dresser with a half of an inch of dust. When I ask her about it, she will use it for a day or two then it sits again.

I think she just didn't want to be the only kid without one.

Mine would never ask for that again because daddy would immediately produce the duct tape and oblige!

(With my somewhat sadistic sense of humor and my strong DIY drive, you best be careful what you ask for around me...

My 12 year old could use a new attitude. Where can I get her one?

Some great ideas and it sounds like more than one of us is sharing the same kid. Thanks to all.

A prescription sounds good.

A trampoline got nixed for sure after watching Tosh.0 the other night. One kid came down landing on his chin. His own feet came around and kicked him in the back of the head. Another kid landed in the springs giving himself a compound fracture of the lower leg. I felt a little nauseous watching both.

When my daughter was 9, she wanted the ipod touch.  We were opposed, but my sister and parents decided that was bad and they got her one.  She was thrilled, but like another poster said it mostly just sits on the dresser with dust on it.  I have 2 daughters aged 16 and close to 13.  My oldest didn't get a phone till she was 14.  The youngest got one last Christmas.  Both of my girls are involved in activities involving traveling on a bus and the phones were for my piece of mind more than anything else.  They have very basic phones and no data plans.  Just minutes and texting.  Mostly the phones sit at home too.  But my youngest has on her list this year:  North Face Denali jacket, and TOMS shoes, Apple bottom shoes, and UGGs or look-a-likes.  We got her the look-a-like UGG boots, and the North Face jacket.  She likes make-up and hair accessories as well.  She might get the TOMS shoes.  Don't know.  One thing I've noticed is my oldest daughter is really individual and would never want anything that was popular at the time, and my youngest wants to be exactly like everyone else.

My niece is 12 this year. She is so into the whole horse riding/show thing it's not funny so I signed up for

http://www.tackoftheday.com

It's got horse stuff every day and I pick and choose things over the year that go with what I know she uses. Water bottle holder, mane combs, braiding stuff, grooming stuff, saddle blankets, etc.

By looking on and off all year I end up with everyone's b-day presents about 6 or 7 months before the date. Same with other special occasion gift times.

Other than electronics, find out what she's into and look at accessories for it.
