I went out to the garage last night to hit the trainer.  It was 18 degrees.  I was wearing shorts, two tops and a hoodie.  Up goes the garage door so I can see all the Christmas lights in the neighborhood.

I hop on and begin to pedal.  18 degrees is cold.  My trainer felt sluggish.  The gear combos that I usually use were way out of my league last night.  I had taken two days off from it, and expected my legs to feel fresh.

Nope

Everything felt hard and I felt tired, like riding in mud.  Thirty minutes later my hands and feet were frozen.  My lungs never felt great.  The cold just kept stinging them.

Does anyone else ride a trainer in the cold like this?  Does the bitter cold ever get easier on the lungs?

25-30 is my cut off for riding. I'll run down to the teens but not bike.

Indoors will be 65ish. There is absolutely no sense in courting hypothermia on a trainer

I guess I could fire up the Halogen work light and put it near my feet. I might make a warm column of air rising up.

Opposite the fan thingy for the indoor trainers.

I do the same thing, garage with the door open.  but 20 degrees is about my limit due to cold toes though.  i wear a hoodie for the first 10 minutes then down to the jersey.  i wear under armour tights for the legs.  gloves come off and on to warm up/ cool off, but my toes just cant keep warm after 30 mins despite warm socks and booties.  i do enjoy the weir looks i get from people driving/ walking by.

Put your trainer in the house?

No reason to get so cold riding on a trainer. Riding outside in the cold is totally different animal and quite fun.

Why yes...yes I do!!

When I was getting ready to do this ride (bundling up in about 10 layers) , my son came up to me and said " Mom, you need an intervention".

Awesome.

Tell me.....looks like a road bike on packed snow? Or is it a cross bike? What kind of tires?

They use so much road salt here that the roads are totally bare.......but I would love to ride on snowy trails. Figured I needed a mtb for that.

Blue Norcross EX cross bike glued up Challenge Griffos at 25 psi , not the best tires in the mud.

My other wheels have dugast rhinos but they weren't ready in time...We still have a month of cross racing left...gonna be cold real cold.

This was about 25 F or so....just a thermal skinsuit, full finger gloves, leg warmers, and wool socks.

A pugsly would be more fun on snow trails

If I were riding when it was that cold I'd have my wetsuit on!!!

More snow riding photos... first on driveway showing depth of snow trying out my new studded snow tires I got for Xmas

My brakes didn't work so I avoided down hills and dragged my feet much like kids do when riding. I have since replaced my brakes to ones that work better and actually slow me down.

Riding in the snow is truly a blast.

Gave up on it a few years ago.

I don't think I can stand the cold weather as much as I get older.

Guess I'm middle-aged lol

No no no!

Don't ever say that!!

Some of those pictures are bringing back memories of delivering newspapers in fifth grade, in January, in 5F degree weather.

I can still feel the cold pain from that in my toes and fingers.  The rule in the house was, below zero and Mom would drive me.  It got to 5 degrees often, but below zero maybe five times in my whole life.

I never had a pair of ski goggles.  Would have been nice.  Sometimes between the tearing and breath fog, my eyelashes would freeze together.  There I am riding down a ridiculous hill as slow as a can with one eye frozen shut, on a bike where the brakes are ceasing to operate. The brakes would make a squealing noise like a dying raccoon.

Last winter I would do as many rides outside as I could. I think a couple of those rides had temps right around -10C with wind chill at -30C.

I WILL NOT do that again. It's the trainer and spin classes for me this winter.

I get too bored on a trainer no matter what the temps...

I've ridden as low as 10 degrees F and with the exception of my toes, all else including the lungs were fine....

And I've run in -5F although that was much harder on the knees and joints as they felt like they were not operating properly....I also breathed through an under-armor cold gear top and scarf.....

Don't think I would even attempt it although I do run in negative temps all the time, doesn't bother me one bit.

Well, I sure am a big fat wus! I hate riding in the cold. I went out last weekend and it was high 40's and froze my tail off. Stayed cold for 2 days. I have Gore-tex jackets etc and I still freeze. Don't know what I am going to do this winter-and the older I get the worse it is. Last year I rode in temps as low as high 30's with sun/no wind.
I can run in the cold, but the sweat/wind chill combo is the killer for me.
