Subject: 30 Day Paleo Challenge

On December 26th, I am starting the 30-day Paleo Challenge.  I know many people who've had great health, energy, and weight loss results from Paleo eating.

I've been dabbling in the Paleo Diet for a few weeks now.  It's very doable.  If it wasn't for the holidays (and making the choice to be realistic), I would have started it earlier.  Info on The Paleo Diet can be found here, or just google "paleo diet" or "30 day paleo challenge.  Or, here's the gist:

-eat a diet that consists of protein, veggies, fruits, nuts, seeds, and fats such as avocado, coconut oil, and a few others.

-eliminate grains (even quinoa), ALL forms of sugar (except fruit), legumes, and dairy.

-Some sources say no alcohol.  Some day only drink dry wines.  I will have the occasional glass of dry wine.

-Some sources say eliminate caffeine.  Others say freely drink coffee and tea.  I will not give up coffee until I feel the need to do so (doubt I'l ever find that need).  However, I will drink it black.

I'll be blogging about how it's going and checking in here.  Join me if you're up for it!

I am IN!!!  I dabbled with it as well before the holiday madness started.  This is exactly what I need to get back into the groove of things.  I was dropping weight and felt great...I so want to get right back to it!

Excellent, Kim! I'm staying with family for the next 4 days, and already have their fridge stocked with food I'll need for the 26th. I'm read to go... after I enjoy a few Christmas cookies and some homemade fudge from my mom today and tomorrow.Looking forward to the road ahead!

That's funny...hubby and I just went grocery shopping so I could be stocked and ready to go Monday.  Meanwhile...I'm enjoying the delicious candy my mom sent from Canada--the good stuff you can't get in the US!

Shoot! I just saw this. It's the 26th here and I had a whole wheat pancake with syrup already.  Restart, k? I swear, I'm a sucker for these challenges. Let's hope I can stick to this one.

I still have a jar of coconut oil from that last time I tried this. I lasted a whole 3 days, I think, LOL!

Ok, after today's feeding frenzy I am so looking forward to tomorrow.  I did get in a 12 mile run so I don't feel toooooo guilty, but still.  Enough!  Can't wait for clean clean clean eating this week and feeling better.  I'm hoping by Friday the little belly I've developed is gone!

By the way, in every version of the 30 day Paleo challenge I've seen, a person is supposed to take a beginning weight and pictures. I will be doing neither, but I thought I'd throw it out there in case you want to stick to the true challenge. I just hate scales! I got ridofmine over a year ago.I just had my final piece of Christmas fudge. Let the 30 day challenge begin!

I'm going to lurk, if that's okay. The diet is actually very similar to the way I like to eat, with the exception of dairy. I love cheese and greek yogurt. I read the information at the link, but I'm not sure I understand why not dairy or quinoa.

Well it's 3:30 and up checking a few forums before I'm off to the gym and see if I can change the way I swim ( Like a rock ).While the scale is not a friend of mine I still feel some relief when I step on it and it is nice to me by showing me a smaller number that the last time I was on it .

Yay! Another challenge with Kim! I was so good today. Even though I was quite upset about something, I didn't stuff my face to comfort myself. I was starving for lunch, but too bummed to prepare a paleo meal, so I ate a couple tablespoons of peanut butter. Dinner was 2 glasses of cabernet and a beef tenderloin salad. Not bad!

Ok, just weighed myself and the damage is not too bad--or at least not as bad as I feared. I'm up 4.5 pounds, which on my 5'0" frame is quite a bit. I could feel that I was on the 'high' end of my weight spectrum.  The good news is that I know most of the weight gain is salt/sugar/fat bloat and usually when I get clean again, I drop it pretty quickly.  I am going to weigh in on day 15 of the challenge and then day 30...I shall reveal the numbers at that time!  A little intrigue for you all!  Cool

Woke up late today so I haven't eaten yet and won't until after a workout...prefer to do so on an empty stomach.

Good luck and let's do this!

Day 1, 10:30 AM

So far, so good!  Ha!  That's not saying much considering it's been just a few hours, but I actually feel good knowing that I'm doing this.  I'm still away from home at my parents' place until tomorrow afternoon.  Their kitchen is full of cookies, fudge, biscotti, dark chocolate, etc... However, I am happy to say I want none of it.

Breakfast this morning was an egg scramble with mushrooms & broccoli and a banana. I cooked the scramble with coconut oil.  It was delicious.  I haven't figured out what lunch will be yet, but luckily their fridge is stocked with tons of veggies and left over turkey from last night's dinner.   I'm making dinner for the family tonight.  I'll post about that later.

A couple days ago, I started reading Robb Wolf's book  The Paleo Solution.  It is an excellent resource, and easy read.  I've also been listening to his podcast.  While he's somewhat pompous in his delivery, he does give a ton of great information.  I highly recommend both.

Have a great day!

Kudos to you for getting this started even though your are still away from home...that is tough.  Thanks so much for starting this challenge.  If you hadn't, I know I would've rationalized not starting until Tuesday, Jan. 2 when I go back to work.  I'm so happy to have a jump start!

We still have cookies, candy everywhere as well...I'm not gonna lie, I do want it...but I know in a few days I won't.

I'm going to see if I can get that book on my Nook.  I currently have Paleo for Athletes...found it to be a terrific source of info as well.  I'll have to check out the podcast.

Off to take the doggies for a walk though the desert!  Can't wait to hear what you're cooking for your family!

I am craving the sugar!  I am not posting pics, but my weight is at 152, which for me at 5'4" is about 17 pounds over race weight.    I am worn out from Christmas day, kids waking me up at 4AM, this morning I had to get up at 3:30AM to get my parents to the airport for there 5:30AM flight (sometimes its better to pay extra for flights)...the bottom line is no workout today, took a nap instead.

Dinner to come, but so far

- Protein bar

- Egg veggie omelet with some cheese, some bacon

- Tuna Salad sandwich (did have some wheat bread)

- Dinner is TBD...

So...here we go.

Hi, all!

So, I weighed in this morning (won't do pictures) and I'm at 142.8, which is about 3 pounds more than my lowest since I've started these weight and body comp challenges. I have to say, if not for these challenges, I would have gained a solid 10 lbs like I usually do over the holidays!

I like that I woke up this morning and didn't feel bloated. Groceries are low because we've been eating out for the last week, ai! I threw together a green bean and tuna salad with garlic, green onions, coconut oil, and some salt/pepper. Having my 1 cup of black coffee. Gotta have my one cup or I get a headache. I'll even drink it black if I have to, which I am.

Here's a to a positive start to a new year!

Thanks, Kim! There was no way I could wait until Jan 2nd. I knew I had to start this earlier. Glad I have some people joining me. Nice work with our first day, all!Day 1, 6:45 PMI made bison chili for dinner. It was surprisingly great! The sides were mashed acorn squash w/ coconut milk and green beans. Luckily my family liked it! I'm back to San Francisco tomorrow and back to training!

Day one done for me...it feels so good to be heading to bed without feeling stuffed or sugardrunk!

Blanda...same here, usually I'm up a good 7-10 lbs over the holidays, so the fact that it was only 4.5 was a happy surprise. I too credit these challenges!

Onward and upward!

Chris, have a safe trip!

Kim: So glad I'm not alone! Every year without fail I gain. Luckily last year I was training for a full marathon and was at least able to keep my fitness, but I sure ate well to make up for any burn. OI! I'm all of 5'1", so every pound gained shows on me. BOOOO!

Kansasmom/Felicia: How close are you to the Paleo diet and how are you doing? I can do without rice and noodles most of the time, but I'd love a serving of Pad Thai once in a while! As a matter of fact, meeting with the BFF and her family tomorrow for pizza and Thai. Struggling on the no rice and noodles, though I can do alright with the Panang and meat dishes. I just hate talking about my eating habits with her husband who has a negative comment about all my health related activities.

I told my husband, who has health issues, that he's eating Paleo style at home, and that he should make an effort at work to do so. He's got high blood pressure. Dangerous kind. I told him that for 30 days we're going to give it a try to see if he feels better. He's one of those guys that was skinny all his life so ate however he pleased. It's caught up with him. His bad health doesn't show much beyond his 40+ year old body's gut, but his BP is telling and landed him in hospital. We'll see how this helps the two of us in the end.

Tonight I bbq'd some chicken, steamed green beans, and made an awesome yam mash with coconut milk. Stocked up on eggs, got some spinach and sausages for a quiche tomorrow morning. I'm not a big fan of eggs so I need to drown the taste out as much as possible.

What do you all eat before a morning workout?   Or during a long workout.   If I am supposed to avoid sugar, I shouldn't have gu's, powerbars.   Throw me some ideas.

I've dug through the fridge for leftover meats before morning races. I'll wolf down a piece of bbq'd steak or chicken before a run to make sure I'm not hungry, and to gum up the works so I won't feel the need to make a pit stop in process. Of course, if I have time, this is in addition to my mandatory cup of coffee.
