I got this email last week (as did all of you who have done this race before I suppose).  It's probably pretty early, but I am the type that is already focused on the next season sometimes before the last one is over.  This race will be my first of the season so it's natural to already be thinking about it.  So who's in?

Hello all,

It’s that time of year again—the 4th annual Alpha Delta Pi-athlon is
coming up!

It will be held this year on Sunday, April 1st at 8:00 am.
The location is still MTSU’s Recreation Center.

Race Day Events will be
providing chip timing and bike racks for the event again this year. We will have
more space and bike racks in the transition area this year so it's not so
crowded.

Don't forget to sign up for the early bird special before March 28th.
Individual: $40, but high school/college students and faculty members get a
discount of $30. Teams: $60, until March 28th. After March 30th, individual
price will be $50 and team price will be $75. Teams can consist of two or three
people.

The transition area will be in the same place as last year. The
swim and bike course will remain the same. This running course will be altered
due to construction on campus. Course maps for that will be posted when
available.

To sign up, go to www.active.com key word: pi-athlon.

Also, our proceeds
go to Ronald McDonald House and our scholarship at MTSU.

If you have any
questions, please feel free to email me. We would love to see you all in
April!

Thanks,
Shelby Smith

I am considering this race.  Is the MTSU pool 25m or 50m?  I did my first tri at the Star Triathlon last September.  It was only a 200yd swim across eight lanes.  If the ADPi-athlon is 300, I'm assuming it's a 50m pool?

I wish the bike leg was in the 14-18 mile range instead of just 10.

The date of this race fits nicely between the Tom King and CMM half marathons so I will likely participate.  How many participants does this race typically have?

This is a VERY small, low key, old school race.  200 people maybe.  The pool is 25y.  You snake swim through it.

Sounds fun.  I'm new to all this and have only done one small duathlon and one small triathlon.  Of the half marathons I've run, I've enjoyed the small ones much more.

No Kidding!  I still haven't forgotten your mishap and was planning to send out a PSA to my mentor group around March timeframe warning about that exact possibility.  Everyone needs to cinch up their cleat tension if they are doing a moving dismount.  And that's true whether you are on top of the shoes, or leave them on.

Sorry Chris, you can't race there.

Hmmm. That won't work.  Even without you there, others will beat me.  So I spose you can go.

When you signed on with Wattie, did you read the contract carefully?  I hear that all members must get the team logo tattooed on their shoulder.  Hence the "Ink" part.  Plus they must compete in one of Wattie's bikinis.  I'm sure that will help you go even faster though.

Still debating this one depending on weather forecast for next week.  Coming out of an indoor pool soaking wet and hitting the bike in upper 40s doesn't sound fun to me.  What were temps in recent years?

Last year was clear, still, about 50 degrees at race start.  I was concerned and had gloves and a hat, but knew I just had to bite the bullet and freeze.

Funny thing is, I never put the gloves on (had them stuffed in my suit) and I was actually comfortable on the bike.  I dried off literally within 2 minutes.  I felt the sensation of cold on my skin, but my core was comfortable the whole time.

There's no telling what the weather will be on race day at this point, but mornings lately have been even warmer than last year's race.

We need a plan.  How about you swing by his house at 4am that morning and let the air out of all his car tires?

If he somehow makes it on time to race, I'll be the backup plan and steal his bike shoes from transition.

So even at 50, you were fine with tri shorts and tri top?  Guess I'll bite the bullet too.  Too far out to tell but when I looked at the 10-day (thru next Friday at this point) it was showing lows back into the upper 40s.

Yes, tri singlet and shorts and all was fine.  And if it matters, I'm a cold weenie.  I always bundle up more than my peers when running or riding.

My guess is that since the race day is out 11 days from now that what you see in the long term forecast is pretty much average temps for that date.

Check again about 1 week from today if you are waivering.  You can still wait to sign up until then and the weather forecast will be more likely to be right.

BTW, many competitors took the time in transition to put on warm riding clothes.  Don't hesitate to do so.

Craig Evans has been the man to beat in middle Tennessee. I don't know a whole lot about him but it seems he wins every race he is in. I'm pretty sure he won the Chattanooga and Nashville Olys last year. Of course he will probably be shaking in his shoes when he sees I am on the participant list, lol.

i looked him up. He is a professional triathlete. So he should definitely be winning any race in the area. I imagine the ADPI is a tune up race for him. Should be fun to go against him if i get the chance to.

Craig was a distance swimmer at WKU.  He is one of the best swimmers in triathlon.  He was 2nd out of the water at IM Florida last fall.  He's usually #1 or #2 out of the water at Xterra championship races.  He's one of the top 5 Xterra pros in the US.

But on the road he's no faster than Chris Hanson!  And he can't get too big of a lead in a 300yd swim.

Take him down Chris!

He is doing this race as a high speed tune-up effort before his first Xterra of the season.  He is also one of the coaches of the newly formed Optimum Endurance triathlon team.  I think he is going to be there as much for his athletes as himself.

I did give him fair warning that I might beat him!
