Subject: First Triathlon - I Think I'm in Love

After fighting off some demons this week (physical and psychological), I enjoyed one of the great days of my life with a finish at the Pigman Sprint Triathlon in Palo (near Cedar Rapids) Iowa. Great weather - great course and organization - this makes for a really nice first triathlon. I'd love to host a group gathering for BTers next year.

Will flesh out a race report when the times are up - but I determined to have fun - spent more time in transitions that I would if I were trying to knock off seconds - but this was fun. The swim was okay - the bike was awesome (wow - passing people - that's fun - I am usually the passee and not the passer). Soooo I finished first in my age group - not sure how many yet 'cause a couple must have dnf'd - didn't see them at the end. I told this kid (about 45) who said, "good job" when they announced my age group - told him, "You have to be either really fast or really old to get an award!)

The joy of this whole thing hit me on the way home - I knew I might have a crush on this sport - but dang - now I think I'm in love. My wife and daughter had to be away for this and I missed them - but what a treasure to have someone who trys very hard to understand this other love in my life and supports me almost unconditionally - since this event was a qualifier for the age group nationals, I'm wondering what she would think of a Louisianna vacation next Sept.

Oh... funniest moment of the day (for observers not the guy)  this guy finds his friend on the beach just before we take off. "You know you've got your wetsuit on inside out don't you?"  He didn't - turned pretty red as he said, "I wondered - it hurt like crazy - this thing was pulling my hair out!"

Way to go Malvey,

Congrats on on your first in your age group Great work see all the training is worth it...

I will lean on you for some inspiration.

I think a gathering of BTers is a great idea.

I know it has been floated out there before, But we need to make this happen...

Again, way to go on your 1st. race.

Super job Malvey!
She's a cruel mistress the Tri is! She makes you get in shape, put on neoprene and spend lots of money on her.

I can understand what you are talking about. I love the sport, too. It is a wonderful feeling to share this experience with those who are near and dear to you. Your loves sharing your love with you.

Awesome job, Malvey! I looked for you but it was tough finding my own family in that crowd. I came in 11th in my age group. Obviously I need to get older.

malvey - 2004-06-06 4:47 PM

- now I think I'm in love.

Ain't it grand??

Congrats on first place! I too dream of a day, when I have aged sufficiently so that I could finish in the top three!! Of course it may be that that will only happen for me, when there are only three competing!! But I won't celebrate it any less!

Way to go, Malvey!
