As long as it's BT Battle of the Bands day in COJ, how about one for us Children of the 80's?

Love both of these bands, but I was always partial to Depeche. Gotta respect a band that had the guts to start out making music using nothing but synthesizers with the processing power of a Casio calculator watch.

I would have to add the Psychedelic Furs to the mix.

That's a tough choice with only those two...but I would have to agree with Depeche Mode...the Cure just got too dark for me.

Wow Scooby... kind of shocked with this one from you. The hair bands pushed me away from rock in the 80s... went to the dark side. DM is one of those bands that when they are on, they are ON. They put out such good songs... but today I can't really listen to them as a whole.

The Cure for me. Can still listen to just about anything from them. Robert Smith is a genius. Some might be offended by such a statement, but for me... for Alt rock/new wave... The Cure is right up there with Zeppelin.

But just so it is said... The Cure, DM and The Smiths were the sound track to a lot of good times.... others too but those are the top 3.

Wow. Good memories of the 80's.

I'm going to go with Depeche Mode. The music was awesome and it still works today.

The Cure are almost as good but it sometimes felt like they tried too hard to be 80's goth.

But I still smile when certain Cure songs still come on the radio

i remember one time driving thru the blandness of the corn fields of iowa, only to be saved by some very good Depeche Mode CDs.....only thing better would have been if the other guy in the car actually knew how to sing!

alas tho, i think i would have to pick the cure on this one.

Depeche Mode for me. They were the largest contributors to the soundtrack of my youth, but there were lots of bands that made the cut on that one But, DM had just what I needed - dark lyrics that pertained to coming of age, synthesizers, great beats, mystery... Oddly, I used to get really pumped up before my soccer games in high school listening to my cassette of Black Celebration on my Walkman. Not exactly the AC/DC that played in the football locker room, but it worked wonderfully for me. Later years, the song Blue Dress became a favorite.

I love the darker songs by The Cure, but some of their lighter love songs weren't for me. Pictures of You is a great song.

No brainer for me.  I'm in The Cure camp, 100%.  I enjoy Depeche but have to agree with the fact that Robert Smith is musical genius.  The Cure continues to make great music and their "classics" have stood the test of time, IMO, much better that those of DM.

That said, I had a Route 66/Behind the Wheel 12" back in the day that was one of the greatest re-mixes ever made...

Not even David Gahan can do David Gahan like I do David Gahan, my friend.

If I had given you control of the radio, it would have been all Tiffany and Debbie Gibson. I saw that "Mall Tour" poster on your wall.

I think Tiffany is hotter now that she has some curves on her.

Seen Robert Smith lately? He could eat David Gahan and Martin Gore for breakfast. Quite literally.

This is a tough one.

2 or 3 songs from The Cure are better than all of the Depeche songs (in my opinion).

BUT, in general, Depeche is the most consistent.

Oh yes... that's a great Cure song! There's something about Robert Smith's voice that is whiny... and I just don't always like it, though.

Therefore, I'm coming down firmly in the Depeche Mode camp.

Just Can't Get Enough/People are People/Shake the Disease/Blasphemous Rumors... the sountrack to my sophomore year in HS.

DM is better live than the Cure (snore), but I think the Cure has the best album (Head on the Door) of all... I mean, CD, showing my age.  And I like more Cure songs than DM songs.

Although I just discovered In Your Room, great DM running song

DM was the soundtrack of my high school years too, though.

I voted for Depeche Mode, only because my friend's sister had one of their tapes (it was the 80's!), and I heard it and LOVED the music. I was hooked. I was about... 11... then. I know I was in 7th or 8th grade.

Then, I saw Erasure on 120 minutes (when MTV played videos) with "Victim of Love", in love again.

Oh but dang... I know I was loving The Cure too around that time because I went to see their show live when I was 13 or 14. My older step brother went with me. It was my first REAL concert.

Then when I was 17, we went to see Depeche Mode... and I was waiting around for the crowds to clear out so I could hook up with my friends who were seated somewhere else. Some random guy walks up to me and hands me a backstage pass to meet the band. So I got to go backstage when the concert was done and I met them.

Oddly enough, I have been jamming to 80's all day and I'm listening to Depeche Mode as we speak.

Ah yes, Picture of You, reminds me of a guy I was in love with... who had slept with my best friend... so I stopped being friends with him for a short time... that song was "the song" I would listen to thinking of him.

Oh to be a teenager. What mental torture it was. Ha!

The Cure, hands down...live show was the BEST! Of course, they seemed quite manic depressive/bipolar - a dark album followed by something like Love Cats....

DM was ok for dancing and parties, but I wouldn't stand in line to see them back then.

Echo and the Bunnymen maybe....

Shriekback for sure!

and then, we had the Dead Kennedy's....oh, more are coming to mind, apparently I didn't kill all those brain cells back in the clubs in the 80s!

the clove cigarette was THE thing back then if you were clubbing and not into mainstream music...I was just thinking about them two days ago as I reflected on memories of my best friend from youth (who died too early at 35). We'd have crucifixes and all types of necklaces on, paisley shirts, spiked and thrown hair, black pants, black creeper boots...smoking cloves...we were too cool (in our minds). What fun it was. I have great memories.
