Master 2277 Lake Norman, NC | Subject: Coffee Etiquette Most of you know that there's something wrong with me. Something seeerrrriously wrong with me. But my co-workers just had a huge laugh at my expense for another one of my twisted character flaws... We just went for a mid-morning coffee run. They walked to Starbucks and I stopped into the McDonalds next door. McD's is offering any size coffee for $1 right now. I'm not a coffee-snob. I don't know the difference between good and bad coffee and I put so much flavored crap in it anyway, it doesn't really matter. I'm not a huge fan of the actual taste of coffee. It's more of just a cheap caffeine delivery system. I'm going to wreck it anyway, so why bother paying a lot for the good stuff? So I got my $1 large coffee and walked next door to Starbucks. My friends were finishing up and in front of everyone, I went to the condiment bar and put some Starbucks vanilla into my McD's coffee. I like vanilla in my coffee and McD's doesn't offer it. GASP! How gouche! How tacky! How blasphemous! As we walked out with my coworkers howling in laughter, one asked, "have you know pride?" "Nope. I guess not." "Do you feel embarrassed to do that at all?" "Not really." "Why do you do that?" "I guess because I don't like spending $4 for coffee, or I know the value of a dollar, or maybe I'm just a cheapskate." "Do you have even the slightest hint that there's something wrong with that?" "Well... To be honest... Yeah. I guess deep down I know it's not the social norm. But the most disturbing thing about it is... I just don't care. There's something seriously twisted and wrong with me I guess." We walked back to the office debating whether I deserved to be shot or not for such a Starbucks travesty. |

The latter and because I did it so brazenly and didn't really care if people looked at me weird for doing it. Because I have no pride, shame and don't get embarrassed. They don't care if I buy McD's coffee. They're a nice group and not snobbish, especially about something as lowly as coffee.

I might agree it is a bit out of line to not purchase anything at Starbucks but help yourself to the condiments. Not the worst I have heard of though. My sister used to work at Starbucks and they had a guy that would bring a bowl of cereal and a spoon with him everyday. He would order a $1.00 drip coffee and then empty their milk container into his cereal bowl. They finally had to start hiding the milk when they saw him coming. |

Master 1883 San Antone, Texas | Subject: RE: Coffee Etiquette FWIW, coffee at Starbucks does not cost $4. That's all the girlie crap that is not coffee. You can get a good cup of coffee for $2 there. And it is definitely twice as good as the coffee from McD's. That stuff isn't even coffee, its hot water that looks black. Edited by djastroman 2012-01-19 10:11 AM |

I don't drink coffee, or beer for that matter because it is delicious. I would make it a daily habit now, just to offend those pretentious baristas. Common now, be nice. Not everyone who drinks Starbucks does it for the image of walking around with the cup. I know plenty of people (one of my coworkers included) who like the taste of coffee and like the taste of GOOD coffee. He drinks certain Starbucks blends but with nothing in it. No sugar, cream, flavor or anything. He's particular about his coffee because he enjoys the taste. I have to admit, I'm the same way about beer when I can. My favorite "corporate brew" is New Castle Brown Ale. I like the taste of beer and refuse to drink stuff like Coors Light. But this isn't about everyone else being snobby. It's about what's wrong with me. Shouldn't I feel wrong about what I did? Why don't I feel bad about it? Is it a capital offense and should I be put to death for it?

I can see how they might think it's tacky if none of you had gone to Starbucks and you just walked in and took their vanilla, but I don't personally think so. Then again, I think pink and red look really good together. *shrug* |

Not a coffee snob or anything but I'd make a joke about it to let them know I noticed, but hopefully not be a total B about it. |

Champion 11989 Philly 'burbs | Subject: RE: Coffee Etiquette Let's review; BFD went into Starbucks with co-workers (plural) who did buy their coffee at Starbucks. While not a paying patron, he was with paying patrons. It's not like he walked in there alone and grabbed the vanilla. I say using a few shakes of a single condiment why accompanying multiple paying patrons is acceptable. Especially since it was a McDonalds coffee cup in a Starbucks. |

Champion 5312 Calgary | Subject: RE: Coffee Etiquette I put this in the same column I put my daily visits to the gas station to relieve myself when on a run. No I am not buying something there. I rarely buy anything there. But I buy a lot of gas at different gas stations and I don't usually use their toilet while I am there. I figure that stuff evens out in the end. So yeah, it looks a little tacky for you to do that. However, if I ran a starbucks or a gas station I would support such tacky patronage. If I could think of a way of encouraging it without looking downright bizarre I would do that too. An ounce of syrup is a very small price to pay for good will. It may or may not be lost on you, but give enough people free syrup I think that Starbucks will end up ahead in the end. |

X2, Not a social stigma but out of line because it's dishonest. Condiments fall into the Cost of Goods Sold column and are reflected on the balance sheet the same as lighting, equipement or any other supplies. You could argue that it the value of the vanilla you used is insignificant but it all adds up and effects the bottom line. |

Master 2264 Sunbury, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Coffee Etiquette I don't drink coffee, so what the hell do I know. But I do know someone who owns a small restaurant and has had people come in and order a water and ask for 6 lemons, then proceed to take 5 sugar packets and make a lemonade. There is lemonade on the menu. I'd say its not the worst offense ever, and I wouldn't cite you for theft. But come on, you know it's weird or you wouldn't ask. If you really don't care about coffee, why care about the flavors? You want vanilla, go to where they sell it. I think the big thing is that now you've lost the high ground when comparing being frugal to your friends' elitism. You can't talk about the many ways starbucks sucks now, because they will always have a retort. "yeah well you stole from them for your precious low-rent coffee." And there is where you really lost out, because reserving the right to be a complete tool about other peoples choices is a right and privilege I happen to love, so I guard it fiercely. You lose that curmudgeonly status when you participate. If you really don't care, ok. But you posted it here, so you care at least a little. |
