Subject: Loading route to a GPS device

Does anyone know how to create a route then load it up to a garmin bike computer or a smartphone?

I am the director of the Tour de Thompson.  I would like to offer riders the ability to have the routes loaded on to their GPS devices to use on the course.  Its a little more green and gotta be easier then a paper map.
