Subject: AT&T threatening to slow down my data

So I got this e-mail over the weekend from AT & T saying that I am in the top 5% of users on my phone data and that if it continues, then they will slow down my data speed rates.  So I go online and check my account to see what I've used.  15 days into the billing cycle and I've used 2.4 GB of data so far.  Now I have an unlimited data plan, so I use my phone for EVERYTHING.  I have one for a reason.  I also use wifi every chance I get in order to keep the usage down.  I've read an article on it and it says that once you've reached a certain point (and it appears to be different for everybody) they "throttle" your speed down to where you can only use the phone and text messages, which I don't do very much of.  It seems that their defense is that they guarantee unlimited Data, but they don't guarantee any specific speed.

This blows, in my opinion.  The only solution they offer is to switch out of the unlimited data plan and into a structured data plan with say 3 or 5 GB per month.  Both of those have tethering, and if given that I'd blow past 5 GB as I'm sitting on that rate right now anyway (without tethering).  It seems to me they do have a bit of an issue as far as guaranteeing unlimited data and then not giving you speeds that will support that usage.  I guess I'm just ranting and PO'd about it.  I don't know what I can really do about it.

AT&T can suck it!

I saw that article too. Sounds like bait and switch to me. Sprint still has truly unlimited data. We're on Verizon and got our plans just days before they did away with their unlimited plans, and so far we haven't gone over what the 2gig plan would do, but we've been very close.

Truly sucks, though.

My buddy got the same warning for his data usage. He only had 27 GB of usage in one month. His average is around 16 before he got the warning so now he uses wifi as much as he can.

Switch carriers or switch your plan.

In the article I read it said that AT&T throttles you down at some random point int eh month and then leaves you there for the remainder of the month.  Verizon at least only does it when they have to.  I can stomach Verizon's policy, but AT&T's really chaps my hide.

If it were just my personal account and I wasn't under contract any longer, I would.  But I'm still inside the 2 years, it's a company contract, I have 2 other individuals on the same account and there are international coverage issues (ex. Colombia does not have very good Verizon service, Japan doesn't either, etc.....).  It can probably still be done, and that may still be a route to take, it's just with the other variables, is that something that would be ideal?  Don't know.

Call them. Tell them you want to switch carriers. Explain to them your situation. Ask them what your alternatives are and how much it'll cost to cancel the plan. In most cases, this will result in them finding a solution to your problems. If not, you'll know the financial consequences of canceling.

2.5GB in half a month is NOT top 5%, that's ridiculous. I'd call them and have a fit and let them know that it's ridiculous. Bet they're bluffing.

No, he said 2.5 gigs in the first 15 days. I'm guessing that 5-6GB+ is top 5%. I'm in wifi range so much so I struggle to use 2 GB on my 4GB plan, but I guess people like this don't use or have wifi available?

So are we really going to have a discussion of whether or not half a month is the same as 15 days?

I actually turned off my wifi for most of this past billing cycle as a test to see how much I could consume. I did some Youtube HD and Pandora streaming and I couldn't get over 1.5 gigs in a full cycle. I dunno what people like Big Appa's friend are doing to get so much usage.

Check your bill and see if the universal service charge has increased. I read somewhere that it is going up. I was able to use this excuse to cancel my service with Sprint several years back. The nice lady at ATT even gave me a photocopied article explaining that Sprint was raising one of those obscure fees by 7 cents that month and to call them on it since it was an increase in the cost and therfore voiding the contract I had. It worked.

I was a bit shocked by 16 and 27 GB data usage in a month too.  Mine is from long bike workouts and watching Vampire diaries.  I don't wear my glasses when I work out and I'm too far away from the TV to be able to see them, so I watch on my phone (netflix).

So you're watching Netflix on the phone for workouts (presumably at home)?  If that's the case, set up a wifi router at home and get the phone on it.  That'll solve most of your data problem right there.

In some ways you're lucky.  Where I live, AT&T's 3G service is so slow I don't think I could exceed 2GB per month if I tried heh.

Maybe not... read this: http://gizmodo.com/5826060/att-chokes-unlimited-data-dead-dead-dead-dead

How much data is the top 5 percent using? Well, consider that a year ago when AT&T moved to tiered plans, AT&T said that 2GB satisfied 97 percent of their customers. No doubt, that number's shifted a bit over the last year, as services like Rdio and Netflix have gotten more popular but 2GB is probably not a bad baseline to start potentially sweating over.

Also, I agree with the suggestion above.  Get a WiFi router for $30 and stream over your home internet connection.  I'm a HEAVY HEAVY user and I don't break 2GB most months.  However I'm always sure I connect to WiFi when available.

Read through your contract.  You should be able to find somewhere that says they have the right to change the terms of your contract, but if they do you have the right to cancel without any penalty.  I would say paying for an unlimited data plan that is no longer unlimited would be grounds to cancel without paying a fee.  Then call up and make the threat.  Even if it's just an empty bluff, they'll will most likely do whatever they can to make you happy.  Depending on how hard they argue, you can always throw in that you're writing a complaint to your state's attorney general.  Of course, at some point they could call your bluff and let you cancel, so you need to decide before you call if you're willing to walk away.

Kurt Kinetic for home then

Another option is to buy downloadable movies / tv shows for your phone while you're at home.  Then just watch those at the gym instead of streaming Netflix.

yeah, I was kicking the trainer idea around.  Makes more sense in the long run since I don't typically watch stuff more than once.

I've got unlimited Verizon - I am clearly under-utilizing my phone, since I have less than 30 megabytes. I mostly use it to stream music and stitcher podcasts as well as GPS when I drive. I guess I should move further away from work to get more usage!

One other thing to think about, you move away from ATT and you get slower speeds. ATT's 3G on the latest iPhone is actually real world faster than 4G right now. 4G has a higher theoretical top end, but that doesn't mean much right now. If you want to stay an iphone, you can move to sprint or verizon and get more data or whatever, but it'll be slower, quite a bit slower.

wgraves7582 - 2012-02-15 10:40 AM I think all companies are doing it - I am Virgin Mobile and got the same warning on their plans.

My step-dad works for ATT and he says that the companies are not prepared for all the traffic that people are using. I think they are just trying to keep people from using too much while they increase their infrastructure. From the inside, Verizon rushed to get 4G (OMG!!!!) but their infrastructure cannot handle the data load, hence the blackouts on 4G but not 3G networks.
