Dh is just starting to get into longer distance running and using GU gels. He was just wondering what some of the preferred flavors you guy have. We realize that everyone has different tastes, he was just wanting to see if some flavors tend to be more popular than others.

So what's your favorite flavor? Or do you prefer something else? All suggestions welcome.

Thanks guys,

Shelly

Triberry is good if you want fruity. The lime is good too... And vanilla bean mmm.. Plain is good too. Chocolate mint, chocolate outrage, expresso... Now that I think about it, they are all good. Seriously, can't go wrong with gu. I don't use it anymore unless its free, but I love it. Some places sell sample packs so you can try the different flavors.

It's all about mint chocolate for me. The only ones I actually don't like are espresso (I don't like coffee) and tri berry. The rest of them I can just put in a bucket, reach in at random and just surprise myself during a run or ride.

There's an orange cream that tastes like a creamcicle. Better than mandarin orange. I also like lemon lime. Jetberry black tastes like grape to me ... and has the caffeine x2. Those would be my top three.

I'm also a fan of Espresso Love for the times later in a run/race where I don't want sweet anymore. They used to make a Cola flavored shot block, and I always wanted them to do that in the gel form, but it hasn't happened.

I haven't tried the Peanut Butter, and don't quite know if I'd like it. I love PB, but just not sure I'd want a mouthful of it in a race. I could see mixing up the chocolate and PB and taking them together.

I'm extremely picky about this stuff as I have an unfortunate genetic quirk for an endurance athlete--my taste buds are hypersensitive to sweet stuff (the way some people can't take chili--it's physically painful) and it tends to make me nauseous as well. So I've spent a lot of time finding, ironically, the least sweet-tasting products. Cliff Shot Turbo Chocolate Cherry and Double Espresso are my hands-down favorites; neither is super-sweet and both have a bittersweet kick (due to a ton of caffeine, which is what really gets me thru long bricks in 90-100 degree temperatures).  Found some chocolate raspberry Gu Roctane in Singapore and going to test that soon.  Aside from those flavors, I can kinda sorta tolerate Gu Espresso Love, Chocolate Outrage, and Peanut Butter--on a good day, I don't gag on them.  I've also forced myself to develop the ability to consume Power Bar Tangerine Gu with a ton of water, as it has caffeine and electrolytes and some races here serve only water or super-sweet local drinks that I can't tolerate, and I need it for the electrolytes.  But what relation to tangerines it has, I have no idea. To me it tastes like pure corn syrup with salt.

As for Gu alternatives, Asian finger bananas fit nicely in a bike bento box. And after 50 km or so, they're basically Gu anyway! I also like putting some salted nuts in there to stop myself from getting nauseated from the sweetness of Gu or energy bars. My mother, who has the same issues with sweets as I do, loves Chex Spicy Party Mix with almonds on her rides.

Honey stinger makes a new chew now that isn't sticky like the shot bloks are...I really like those and the expresso gel or the chocolate are my faves.

Most of them are pretty good, just stay away from the chocolate, peanut butter, chocolate mint, and espresso.  The last thing you want when your in the middle of a long run is a mouth full of cake frosting.  Stick to the fruit type flavors.  Think of it this way, what would you rather drink in the middle of a long run, a glass of chocolate milk or a glass of fruit juice?

Ha!  I'm just the opposite.  I hate the fruit flavors.  The chocolately ones are the best.  My favorite is Gingerbread, which they make around the holidays.

Peanut Butter is my current favorite and I am thinking about combining it with the chocolate or the triberry for an extra treat!

X2. There’s a new chocolate cherry flavor GU that’s really good too, and vanilla is also a favorite.
