Curious as to what you use to carry hydration during your long runs and races.

I'm training for a Half Mary coming up real soon, in addition to a HIM (Augusta IM70.3) and currently am just carrrying a polar bottle of gatorade/water. Kinda curious if I would get any use out of a Fuel Belt. It seems like it would be nice to free up my hands (it's kinda annoying having to carry a bottle).

Also, would there be any need for carrying your own hydration during a HIM race? (aside from controlling what type of hydration is offered) i.e.- there's plenty of aid stations with hydration, right? No real necessity to carry my own?

I take some cash and stop to buy a Gatorade when I need it.

I've used a fuel belt for the past 6 years and love it. I also use Infinit so it makes sense for me to be able to carry my own nutrition. I also just moved back from Japan and their on course nutrition was hard to adapt to, think warm noodles during a marathon. Point is, I love my fuel belt.

I train in extreme heat most of the year and the tap water isn't potable here, so hoses aren't an option LOL (though I have some people on my running routes "trained" to put the hose on  me if they're out washing cars or watering gardens, for cooling purposes). I have a hydration belt from REI called a Double Shot. It holds the two bottles at an angle and has bands to keep them from bouncing. I can carry up to 32 ounces of water/ Nuun this way. Occasionally, in really extreme conditions, that's not enough. Then I either stop by my house to refill, or carry money so I can buy water or a sports drink. In the past, we didn't have 24 hour shops and that wasn't an option; it is now.

I use a handheld water bottle (Nathan's quick draw I think). It was annoying at first but I love having water whenever I need it. I have various routes that go by a couple water fountains. So I can always refill when I need to. I got used to it and switch hands when one arm gets tired.

I used in in my first HIM last Oct. The run was 95 degrees and water stations seemed to be running out. I was SO THANKFUL I had my own bottle and didn't need to rely on them. I also have to drink something when I take in nutrition, otherwise I get a big stomach ache. so I needed to be able to drink whenever I needed to.
Whatever you get, train with it so you can work out the issues before hand.

I carry one of these with some extra money for gatorade if I need it. It's pretty awesome.

fuel belt with 2 18 oz bottles at an angle.

If I am going more than 24 km, I will do a short loop to start carrying a hand held bottle for a shorter loop then grab my fuel belt for the rest.  Didn't take any time to get used to running with it.  Don't carry my own in races, but I have wished I was carrying something the last two half marathon I've done since aid stations were missing.

For the last 1.5 seasons I have carried nutrition on the run and used water from the course.

I've stashed everything in a mailbox and ran loops, I've used a fuel belt. However, now I use a camelback and love it. I can fill it with 20 to 60 ounces and gels, bars, money, and anything and go. I can make up my route, get lost, pretty much do anything. I love that freedom. Some of my runs this training block went long and I was set with plenty of fluids to go longer.

Handheld water bottle + run by places where I can re-fill.

As for carrying it in a race - totally personal preference. I have carried my own in races where I knew it would be extremely hot. I also know my body requires more than a few dixie cups of water every mile in extreme heat, so part of that was very personal to me.

I suppose I use a couple of the available choices:

I like to do my long runs at a park with a 5 mile loop trail through the woods.  I use my car as an aid station and pop the trunk with my remote key as I approach.  Dump my empty bottle, and grab a fresh one.

If I'm not able to run at the park (which is a bit of a drive for me to get to), I'll carry water on a hydration belt - which I frankly don't like to do, as it seems to loosen up on me as I go on and I have to constantly retighten it.

Waist belt. I only run far enough to need one now, but do have a belt for 2 bottles from when I was running farther. On-route water options are very limited and not sure how trust-worthy they are. It wasn't that hard to get used to the belt.

I used to use a hydration belt but that was when I was just training for marathons. I never liked carrying anything while running.  But, the last couple of years I just carry a bottle of water with me and stage my car where I can do various loops and still get by the car for a refill or some Gatorade.  Also run by a Target and other stores so it is not an issue.  On most of my runs the last 6 miles are through a park where there is plenty of water available.

For a tri I never carry water on the course.  Even in a marathon or HM I would maybe carry what's left of whatever water I was nursing at the start.  Great way to bypass the first few water stops.  Usually toss it after the second water stop though.

enjoy,

Duane

So I am doing my first HIM this June (Syracuse 70.3).  I have done several sprints and Oly's and I don't carry any water for those runs.  I hydrate well on the bike and then usually am fine for the 10K.  I may swallow a bit of water from a cup.  On my longer training runs I use a belt with 4x10 oz bottles.  I find it WAY easier to drink while running from a bottle than a silly dixie cup.

So my question is for the HIM am I going to look ridiculous if I use my hydration belt?  Do many/most people carry water?  I don't think I will be able to get enough for a HM out of the dixie cups.  I practically drown when I try to swallow more that a bit from them.

Thoughts?

KUDOS ON THE CAMELBACK! I stuff my gels and cell phone  in it. It gets me to about mile 18 and then I run right by a fountain and refill it! It also has a better area to clip my ipod on it. The only issue is that it will ruin your shirts, so you have to put tape on the area of the shirt it rubs on

I just did my 1st HIM last weekend and was totally surprised by how few people carried nutrition belt. The course was a double out-and back, so aid stations were quite frequent, but I just didn't want to leave it up to chance that I'd be able to last between stops. I wore a belt with 2x10 bottles and was so so so glad I had my own drinks when I needed them.

Don't worry about looking ridiculous -- you're the bada$$ out there for 5+ hours!

Good luck and have fun!

10 miles or greater and I usually bring the nathan belt.  During my half mary, I'm glad I used a haldheld in addition to the aid stations, which were slightly spread out for my liking.  For my 140.6, I plan to live off the course since aid stations are every mile instead of every 2-2.5.

100 oz Camelback for training and racing, and long training bike rides as well. I go through a lot of water . I really like that drinking from the hose doesn't interrupt my stride, so I tend to drink ver small sips very frequently.

For my longs runs, I have a loop that brings me back by my house, so I can control how far I go by how many loops I do.   I can then get a drink or a gu if need be.  If its hot, I carry a Nathan belt with a standard water bottle in it.

When it's upwards of 10-12 miles, and it's not hot out, I have been known to run without any fluids at all at a low 8 min/mile pace.  Normally though, a Fuel belt with the 2 - 8 oz bottles it came with, 1 with gatoroade, 1 with water is pretty common.

I have the nathans water bottle from above and I don't use it. (Never really given it a chance. Took it out once and decided it wasn't for me). I either do loops that bring me past my house or plant water the night before a long run. I like putting water out as it gives me a place that I can focus on getting to and breaks up the run.

I prefer the fit of the Nathan belts over the other brands. But, go to a running store with a treadmill and ask to try them out. You'll see what works for you really quickly!

I used to live by the beach, so I just used water fountains.

Now, in AZ, I carry a camelbak backpack for trail runs, like this one: http://www.camelbak.com/Sports-Recreation/Packs/2012-Classic.aspx but so far, I've only used it trail running.

I have a camelbak hand held bottle for runs up to two hours and moderate temps, a camelbak flashflo (lumbar) for temps above 85 and distances greater than 7 miles and an Ultimate Direction back pack with which can hold two 100 oz bladders on really hot, humid, long run days.

Ran out of water once and stopped in a gas station to buy gatorade, must have been some sorry, sweaty, and smelly sight, because everyone just parted at the counter and said "let this guy go first".

I did 9-13 mile loops starting from my house and would carry one of those twist top Gatorade bottles with me. At the end of the loop I'd grab another bottle out of the fridge and before making another loop. I used to use a 70 oz Camelback, but it wasn't very comfortable during the summer.

I just carry a handheld bottle for shorter runs depending on the temperature. For long runs (or even medium runs if its hot) I wear a camelbak. As someone else said, you can just fill it up and go without worrying about running out for a while. The bad part is that it's hot on your back and yes, it definitely ruins shirts.
