Pre-race routine:

The usual, picked up a friend, drove to the race. It was not raining in Minneapolis, but started to get rainier as we drove south. Once we got to Cannon Falls it was a steady drizzle and quite a bit cooler air. As we sat in the car (to the very last minute) it started to sleet. Awesome!

We brought our stuff to transition, laid out the few things, and headed to the start. We probably only waited about 3 minutes then, it was perfect.
Run
  • 19m 43s
  • 2 miles
  • 09m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

This must include transition because I am pretty sure I came in around 18 minutes. Not sure, but anyway it was a VERY hard run. I started off way too fast and hit mile 1 marker under 9 minutes. Everything hurt and the hills were murder, it was just too fast for me. I recovered the best I could on the downhills and to make it back without hurting myself. Probably not the best way to start a race.
Transition 1

Comments:

I don't have the time, but this was hampered by trying to snap my helmet strap with bulky gloves on. Once I realized I was an idiot and took them off, much time was wasted. I clearly lost my head because I left T1 without the gloves! At 38 degrees and rainy! D'oh!
What would you do differently?:

Put the gloves on AFTER buckling my helmet.

Comments:

We had headwind and strong crosswinds on the way out, added on top of the cold and rain. And sleet. I did the best I could and fortunately the return trip was MUCH better. The skin on my hands was very cold, but I managed to pull my shirt sleeves down to my knuckles, which really helped. At the end I wasn't generating any heat due to the tailwind and slight downhill and then I got really cold again. I had to sit up and ride in the hoods - ugh. But considering I was just below the 50% overall on the bike, it was obviously difficult for a lot of people.

There was the usual foolishness like any sprint race with people not staying to the right, etc. Fortunately the field was small enough it wasn't too dangerous.

I was too cold to have a gel, which I planned to do on the bike (two, actually, one right away and one at the end). I decided to have my gel in T2, which ended up being enough.
What would you do differently?:

Stay home.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

No official time, but this went pretty well. My legs/feet from the knee down were numb, so getting my shoes on wasn't as smooth as usual :)
Run
  • 30m 42s
  • 3 miles
  • 10m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

This actually went really well, the time must include transition. I couldn't feel my feet or ankles for at least the first mile, so I had to take the downhills more carefully. I felt really positive and just tried to keep up a steady pace. It felt SO GOOD to be off the bike! I love a second run in a du.
Post race
Warm down:

After the race I was starting to get very cold. I was torn between wanting to wait for my friend at the finish, stand in the food line, or bring stuff to the car. I ultimately got in the food line and we headed back to the car right after my friend finished. I definitely gave it everything I had.

Event comments:

Final Stretch always does a good job and I really like their races. The weather sucked and it almost always does this weekend, it's a curse.

Way to stick it out and finish well, Emily!  You pace difference between the run legs is pretty small which I always take as a good sign in a du.  I couldn't imagine the bike without gloves of some type.  I didn't realize the sound on my bike helmet on the 2nd half was probably sleet until reading your race report.  I thought it was just raining harder.  My sunglasses were crooked on my face for most of the bike and I couldn't get them fixed with my gloves on.  I'd already had a lot of trouble getting my right glove on the start of the bike and wasn't going to mess with them again.  Regardless, I wasn't seeing too well and just stayed focused on the road.

I was impressed with the turnout on such a miserable day.

OK, wow! Given the nice winter / early spring we had, I forgot about the cold snap that we had in late April. Sounds like you made the best of a challenging race. What is the topography of the Canon Falls area? Those hills sound tough.

Yeah, nice timing - right? The last weekend in April tends to have a hex on it, weather wise.

Fortunately the bike was not very hilly, it was a really long and boring out/back (and smelly!). It's pretty flat farmland. The run was around the Cannon River and in town neighborhoods. That was really pretty, hills similar to running around the Mississippi where you have to run down to the river and back out again. So, it was actually a pretty challenging run!
