I went on a long run the other day and cars go by and yell for no reason. I run on the sidewalks and I just wonder why they yell or throw something? Has this happened to you? It startles me when they do it.

People are @$$-holes, and they prove it every day. I'm no longer surprised at the depths to which  humanity stoops.

Typically just whistles and cat calls.  The heckling is ridiculous, I'm a human being, not a piece of meat.

Actually, save for the very rare nice comment, I can't say I've ever had anyone yell at me while running.  Sounds like some nice people in your area.

My running is not that far yet, but it happens now and then.  I live in a college town, and sometimes when I go for a run later at night I run past house parties and they yell something.  Usually its not bad just drunk college kids doing what they do, being drunk.

Happens to me all the time.  It startles me sometimes, I've only had something thrown at me once. Middle finger works great and doesn't break my pace.

Just be glad you're not of the female persuasion, then it turns into it being unusual if you don't get yelled at in some way.

I agree the middle finger allows me to communicate without wasting my breath.  It also serves as an invitation for them to come back if they'd like and repeat what they said.  So far there has only been one taker on that deal, however reasoning got the best of them and they stayed in their car.  Probably best for me as well, I don't think I'd look very good in "Department of Corrections" orange...I'm more a spring colors type of guy.

Do what you feel is best, of course, but I really don't recommend the one-finger salute be given to people who have already shown themselves to be beligerant a-holes.  They MAY be too cowardly or lazy to stop, but then again ...  (And if you are going to give the salute, you should really shower first, anyways.)

A nice wave and smile tends to make those folks confused, in my estimation.

i only get yelled at, things thrown at me, and car harassed while running/cycling by myself.  groups tend to deter the behavior

A few years ago I was running with a friend and I was about 10 feet in front of him when we passed a group of 4 kids on bikes. As I went passed them one of the kids screamed at me and made me jump. While the kids were laughing at me my friend ran past them and screamed at them causing one of them to fall off his bmx bike. I figured we were even.

It happens literally every single time I set out to run. Every. Single. Time.

I don't even flinch anymore when people lay on their horn next to me, or do the short beep-beep, holler "wooooo" or scream high-pitched out of their window, cat-call, whistle, "hey baby", and what not.

People must really be that bored.

Well if at first you don't succeed, there is always Mace and a jab to the throat.  I guess I could try a nicer more confusing approach.  Perhaps I'll stop right where I am and do the Running Man in place or bust out some Kid N' Play moves.

These stories sadden me. Why do people suck SO much?! I have been running for 2 or 3 months and haven't been yelled at or targeted with projectiles yet. I do run in my neighborhood though, which is basically a real-life Pleasantville full of smiling children on bikes whose parents actually punish them if they're a-holes.

In the past when I experimented with running just outside my college campus, though, I did get some nasty rednecks whistling at me on occasion. It's not in my personality to give a one-finger salute. I tend to get angry, blush a little, and ignore.

When people feel inferior and jealous, the only way they know how to make themselves feel better is to try and take you down a notch.  So they yell and make fun of you.  It's retarded behavior, but it happens.  Instead of being inspired by seeing someone doing something good, they take the low road and get defensive because they know they'll never have the intestinal fortitude to commit to something like we do.  It's cowardly.  If/when I witness this behavior, I laugh knowing I have the upper hand because I know that they know they'll never be as good as me.  It's a game of chicken.  They always flinch first.  I win.

I've had a car pull up and cruise alongside me biking.  Teenagers rolled down the window.  It was 6:30 in the morning or something like that.  They've all got a silly, we're so crazy/cool, look about them and one of them says, "Hey, what town is this?" as the other giggle and laugh.  I answer.  They continue to cruise right along side for a minute or so.  It was a little unnerving, but I didn't want to let these little f*%^ers ruin my ride, so I tried to ignore them and be ready to hit the breaks and turn off if need be.  They seemed to get bored and pull away.

On the other side, I've been honked at or yelled at, only to realize that it was a friend or a fellow member of my tri club trying to encourage me.

I'm a bit paranoid about flipping someone off and then realizing that it's either a friend, or even worse, one of my clients.

Ill get an occasional yell or something stupid that I usually cant even make out.  Every now and then ill get a cat call or two from a nice woman or two.  Those are encouraged and usually get a laugh out of me.

My wife and I were out doing one of her run/walk sessions the other day, and I was pushing our two little boys in the stroller. In the middle of one of the walk phases, someone drove by going crazy fast and threw a bottle that came inches from hitting my 3 year old in the face. I was SO mad, but at the speed they were moving, I couldn't come close to getting a plate number.

And that was just walking with kids in a stroller - usually you have to at least be running to draw that kind of negative attention from the dirtbags of the world.

Funny experience a couple weeks ago.  It was a weekday afternoon, just after the school had let out.  I was about mile 4 of 13 on a nice long run.  Going down the sidewalk, there was a group of middle school boys up ahead.  Not a problem....just on the grass and go around, which I did.  Well of course, one of the boys had to be 'cool' and took off running with me in a teasing goofing manner.  So heck, he's running too, might as well be nice to the kid.  So I look over and say, "Hey..thanks for joining me!!!!  You in for the rest of the of 9 miles?"   DOH!!!!  The look on his face was priceless as he stopped and went back to his friends who were now teasing him!  Fun times!

Yes, it happens.  My solution?  Ipod.  Pretty loudly.  Aside from making sure I'm safe on the roads, I'm in my own little world out there (where I'm imagining I'm a rock star belting out whatever song is on).
