What would you consider a respectable 5k time?

Any other 250 guys out there

Not 250 when I ran my last 5k (240) but I was happy with 30:25 min. Especially since it was my first race.

Did a 29:05 on a training run last week on a very flat run.

Aiming for a 630 pace on my first tri in a month.

For me, today -- I would be happy with anything around a 10:00/mile pace.  If you asked me this a few years ago, I would have had a different answer, 8:30/mile.  But man... 30 extra pounds, stopping running for 7 years and turning 40 will slow a man down.

So... 31:00 minutes for a 5k is my answer.  That would make me very happy today.

That seems about right to me 30-31min I mean I am actually closing in on 245 was 265 a month ago! Pushing for at least 235 by the time I race in a month and half!

I am right at 214 now... so, I guess some would say I should be faster.  But my training for my first sprint has been heavily bike/swim focused - since I "thought" I knew how to run.  Now my swim (1:44/100y) and bike (~17mph) are my stronger events and my run is slow (10:25/mile).

The good thing about my being slow is that I have lots of room for improvement between now and my second race later this year!

210lbs

5k time between 20-21 mins

bike splits on a flat or rolling course in the 24-25mph area, hilly courses over 20mph

swim times in the 1:30-1:40 per 100

when i was 250lbs  3 years ago, i was running 30min 5k's, i think that is a good and respectable time for a 250lb athlete.

I'll usually do ~13min/mi pace but I'm working towards my goal of a pace in the 10's.  If I get into the 10's I'll be happy.  I'm sure fewer pounds would help a lot, I'm working on that too.

Did a 5k a few weeks ago, 29:59, literally one sec under. That's my profile pic, me laughing as I saw the clock at the finish line and sped up to beat 30 min. 258 lbs now. Off the bike is another story. I am happy with a 10:30 pace after a 15 mile bike ride.

I'm 270 and my PB was 27:00 but this was some kind of wonder day. I think any of us big boys hitting the half hour mark are laughing. Especially when the first 5k I did was, "are you kidding me? I'm not doing that."

Started out at 250 and I was turning 10:00 min/miles.  But respectable is all relative.  So many variables to consider.  Now at 207 and ran a 5K fun run this past weekend and posted 8:30/miles.

If at the end of the race you can respect the effort you put into it then pace be damned.  Its a heck of a lot better than sitting on the couch eating potato chips watching Sportscenter.

For an all-things-are-relative perspective, my 5k PR is still just over 40 minutes. Seriously. I think that will change in July, but I don't see going sub 30 for another year.

I have a stand alone 5k in 2 weeks....if I can break 36 I will be thrilled.

For my sprint tri in 3 weeks, I would love 36, but can't put a number on that one.

I just did a 5K in 29.58 while pushing my 28lb kid in a Bob stroller. The course was an out an back with a slight incline out, and downhill back. I did the aggressive couch to 5K training program (pushing a stroller the entire time) and was 237lb on race day. (Lost 10lbs due to the program and weight watchers.) I was ecstatic with that time.

I'm with you!  I have a 10k this weekend, (fingers crossed my leg will be healed), and I am hoping to break 1:20!  My stand alone 5k is around 36 min too.

My sprint tri is in 5 weeks, and it is a 4 mile trail run at the end, and I would love to do it in under an hour, but I can't time it either.  The bike course is just BRUTAL, so I have no idea how my legs are going to feel coming off that!

I think a respectable 5k would be what ever you can do your best on that day.  I would shoot for trying to run the entire thing with out a walk is also respectable.  I think several people put some good times to shoot for.

Now competative is a different level.  From what I've seen at races, sub 7:00 is very competative.  At the race I did this weekend, on a relatively flat course, I had a good swim (it was long so don't know my 100 time but I usually swim 1:30s in the pool), I pulled a 24.4 on a 13 mile bike and 21:27 for a 5k.  I'm 6'1" and 215.

My PB  a few years ago when I was around 250ish was 31:05.  Since then I never ran races short of 10k and got to a 59:xx something for 10k at around 230-240.  I've now dropped down to 205 and did my first standalone 5k in like 3 years at 23:47.

When I was around 250 my goal was always sub 30 but I started doing longer races and didn't even do any 5ks to see if I could do it.  Then I lost weight and my times dropped dramatically.

So I just did 5k give or take!

In 37min, I am sure I got more in me! And the traffic lights and the stop at the ATM probably didn't help either.

Hey guys what kind of training programs are you doing?  I finished my first tri in April but I injured the area around my ankle from training so i've taken about a month off and i'm going to get back into it.

Thanks,

Stef
