Subject: RE: Respectable 5k time
I have read a bunch of run training programs and I go more by time . It seems the main goal at this stage in my development is to add mileage by working on time running rather than pace - heck, I don't have much variance in my pace anyway. Most of the advice on this site, which has helped me, is to 1) maintain a conversational pace [ie being able to talk as you jog] and 2) increase no more than 10% a week. On the first, I find myself at times going too fast and have to slow it down if I start huffing and puffing. On the second, I wish I knew it years ago as I have had numerous running injuries over the years from doing too much before my body was ready. On a practical side, I run twice a week, once on a treadmill and the other on trails. My goal is to run a minimum of thirty minutes. I run walk and try to increase each month how long I can go before needing a walk break. Right now I am at 10:1 ratio - 10 minutes of running, 1 min walk. I am about at a point to push to 11:1. I usually maintain an avg pace of 10 min/mile even with the walking. What about others.

Hey guys what kind of training programs are you doing?  I finished my first tri in April but I injured the area around my ankle from training so i've taken about a month off and i'm going to get back into it.

Thanks,

Stef

What were you running at before your injury?  I actually used the C25K program when I first started running.  I am up to running about an hour and a half at a time, and am working up my mileage per week. I also didn't increase my pace too much, I was increasing my mileage.  I am now on Hal Higdon's program, to put some sprints into my workouts to work on my pace now.  I also agree, that the 10% rule is a good one to follow.  Trail Running is my first love, so I am working my way up to a 50k.

I am going for my first 25k trail race by November and would like to run a 2 1/2 hour race, which would be a massive difference from my last attempt at a 15 miler which was 4 hours about a year ago.

I just got back from a lunch-time run.  I did exactly 3 miles in 27 minutes, at what I would consider a "comfortable and leisurely" pace.  Originally when I started training my goal was to finish a 5k under 30 minutes.  I'm beginning to wonder now if I can't hit somewhere near 26 minutes knowing that I will run the race with a slightly higher sense of urgency than a lunch time jog. Granted the 3 miles is a little shy of 5k so I'll have to make up for the extra distance as well.

I have a sprint tri next Sunday, and a stand-alone 5k the following Thursday.  It will be interesting to compare my run split from the tri to my stand-alone 5k time.  I fully expect the tri split to be considerably slower than the stand-alone.

By the way I'm 6' 225lbs (and shrinking) , and 42yrs old.

My husband is about 340 now and can run a 5K in about 28 minutes.  So I'd say there's no defined answer to your question.  It depends on your endurance, training, and technique.  Even though my hubs is carrying about 150 pounds of extra weight now, he can still muscle out a sub-10 mile....so I'd say don't let your weight hinder you and go as fast as you can!

I roll in at 6'5", around 230 and ran a 21m 50s 5k in a sprint TRI back in March.  22m 50s in 90 degree heat last weekend.  last year I could barely run 10:00's and kept getting hurt.  Spent this past winter working on my stride and cadence. It was a lot of work but paid off in a huge way..  Nothing better then the look on a skinny dudes face than to have a couple of us big boys run them down....    My motivation has been being told "That guys your size don't run races like this"...

I just ran (as part of my sprint this past weekend) a 5k in 31:50.  Not blistering fast, but faster than those sitting at home!

One of the previous posts said " your best on that day"  I agree.  Started out at 265 and at~ 38-40 for 5K...  Did 3 sprints races and in the last I was 225 and managed 8:30 miles on the nose.  Best stand alone 5k time 25.34.  Goal was always to break 30.  The last race was the only one that I did not walk a step and that was the real victory.  I worked hard in training on trying to increase the run walk interval till I got to the point that I did not walk at all.

I'm 6'3" 220 and train at a 10'mile.  I haven't run any races yet but I think I'm training pretty hard so I don't expect my race time to improve that much. I've only been at it 5 weeks and I'm up to 4 miles at a time.

Respectable should all be based off of your personal goals in my opinion.

5 foot 10 206ish most days

PR is a sub 25 on an absolute flat course at the beach

Looking at a sub 26 in stand alone 5K around here which has some slight hills

anything under 27 in a sprint tri is a good time.

Any time between 27 and 30 minutes depending on many factors would be good for newbie runner (1st year)

6'3 282 started running 6 weeks ago. I ran a 35:35 it training yesterday. For me considering I could not run a 1/4 mile 6 weeks ago this is great. I have my 1st ever 5k in 2 weeks honestly I just want to finish under 35 anything else would be a bonus! I followed my 4 mile run yesterday with 50 laps in the pool about 550 meters, if I had a road bike I would of followed that with a ride............

hitmankf - 2012-05-20 11:57 PM Not 250 when I ran my last 5k (240) but I was happy with 30:25 min. Especially since it was my first race.

Did a 29:05 on a training run last week on a very flat run.

Aiming for a 630 pace on my first tri in a month.

6:30 pace would break your training run time by almost 10 minutes!!  Assuming you meant 8:30?

Ran a stand alone 5k race last October at 238 lbs in 25:51 - that was the best pacing I've done in a stand alone run race.  That's all I had that day.  My run training at the time was minimal...probably 10-12 miles a week for a month before that race.  Race report is here: http://www.fatguysredemption.com/2011/10/10/race-recap-crystal-beach-5k/

Back in June 2010, I ran the 2nd 5k of a duathlon in 25 flat, but I was also 195 lbs back then.

I just did 3 miles on this weekend tri - 31:31, so nothing to brag about, but at this point I'm happy with it as its the best tri time I've had.

Since this thread is still rolling, I will tell you about my new 5k pr - get this: 36:10. I'm thrilled. Most people would shoot themselves over a 36:10 in a 5k, but considering where I came from, it's awesome. It was hot and had one serious major hill in it. When I get to a cool flat one, I may break 35.

It's all relative. My sister ran her 2nd 5k that day, and had a 44:xx and was also thrilled.

I agree with what many are saying here.  I believe each individual would have a respectable 5K time, that is what ever is the best you can do.  I ran my first 5K race 2 weeks ago @ 31m and I was thrilled.  It my not have been the best of time, I placed 17 out of 24 in my age group.  It was a huge accomplishment for me.  The next steps are to beat 30m 5K and match that time in my first triathlon.

Congrats!  That is a great time!  I got to 30 min the other night, and couldn't be happier!  I know my normal is still around 35 min, but a challenge was laid down, so I had to see if I could pull it off!

My best 5k is 32:40, I still struggle with holding too much back. I know I can do faster just something inside tells me to hold back until I am almost at the finish. However this race actually got me 3rd place in my AG

Newbie here. Did my first tri about a month ago. I finished 3rd from last, the run killed me. I seriously could've walked faster. I'm training a lot more on the run for my next sprint in 2 weeks and I'm hoping to break...40:00 for the 5k! And to not be the last male finisher.

At 6' 275 with a 9" scar splitting me in half to remind me of where I've come from (heart surgery) I have different goals than many. Finishing is an exclamation point.

at 6' and 300lbs I have done a 36:52 and a 37:01 I don't know how I got slower on the second race as I ran a lot more of it than I did the first. I'd like to get it under 30:00 before Christmas.
