We're one month away so I'm starting the thread. I'm doing the Oly. It will be my first Olympic distance triathlon. I'll have half a dozen sprints under my belt before this race, but am still a new swimmer, so that's got me a bit nervous. I have heard it's an easy swim since you go with the current, and I've done 1600yds OWS in practice, but with a wetsuit. There a pretty good chance this won't be wetsuit legal, it wasn't last year. From looking at the swim times appears the current really pushes people along. it I've done the bike and run course a thousand times, so no worries there.

So who's in?

Not registered yet, I'm currently on the bubble.  I'll know more after Eagleman in a couple(!) weeks.  Some tendonitis in a foot is my current malady, the internet says it's Posterior Tibial Tendonitis.  I have another HIM in early July, so I may need to rest.

I really want to do the OLY race, since I did it last year, it would be a good bench mark to see the improvement since last year, and I think I'd have a pretty good shot at the podium.  But that's with healthy feet...

And yes, the OLY swim has been point to point, down-stream, so it's an easy .9 mile swim.  Last year the sprint was wetsuit legal, but the water warmed up .2 deg by Sunday to make it non-wetsuit.  With the recent weather, if it stays this warm, I'm sure both days will be non-wetsuit.  In 2010 the water was something like 85.

The Schuylkill River at 85 degrees sounds like a petri dish!  They will be handing out penillin shots at T1. Laughing

I will be there cheering Brian and some other folks on during the Olympic race on Sunday.

Thanks Vince! I think the heat has completely screwed with my head, yesterday we were biking along the river out towards VF and I told my friend I thought the river looked really good for swimming. What's just as bad is that she agreed.

I have no idea what my tri club has planned, but for sure there will be a cold case of beer at my house for afterwards, and I'm within walking (biking) distance from the finish. I'm offering

Mostly flat. The section along MLK Drive is very flat and fast. The loop through Fairmount Park (Edgley and Mt. Pleasant) has some short hills, nothing major. There will be some technical turns coming on and off of MLK Drive where you'll have to make sure you don't run into someone.

I am doing the Olympic.  Last year this was my first Olympic distance race (I had done a 70.3, but never an Oly) and my chain came off during the bike and I ran out of steam on the run, so I am hoping for a better result this year... and a wetsuit legal race would help!

Hey Brian, I think we are on the same Tri club (T3).  If we are, they always have a good set up after the race.

Hey Brian, I'll be at the Philly Tri sprint. I've done Philly Womens' and SheRox, but never the Philly Tri.

Off topic--since you live where you do, do you know of anywhere to park for the Philly Bike Race this Sunday? I've always had a parking pass in the past, but I don't have my connection anymore. A few suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks so much. Linda

You got me, I'm in T3. I've also become custodian of the tent and barbecue. We still have all the food from Devilman, it was way too buggy to set anything up. So you might be eating 2 month old burgers

I'm not sure, there are a lot of street closures so it will be tough to get a metered spot. There are lots at 21st and the Parkway and 19th and Callowhill.

I'll be a volunteer at the sprint. I always volunteer for SheRox with my running club, it's a great event and I have had the same job for 4 years now, pedestrian traffic control on the sidewalk at road out of T2.

ok so I started to read the river cast and now the fear I originally had (getting sick from swimming in it) has reemerged, so for those who have done the race before did you guys take some pill or something to decrease the chance of geting sick....im paranoid about that, which is why it has taken me so long to muster up  the courage to register for this race.....

I was last year too, but I have a friend who works for the EPA and she said this is one of the cleaner urban rivers and I shouldn't worry. It's actually a lot cleaner than most of the lakes around here. There is actually a swim club in Conshohocken right on the river.

My physician suggested a tetanus booster since there was more of a chance I'd step on something and cut myself.

The red condition is because of the recent storms. No biggie.

That sounds like a plan. I'm pretty sure my club will be there with a tent as well. I'm expecting it to be a lot of fun.VB.

I was talking to the guys at Fairmount Running Co. and they had been out running the path earlier. They said it was moving fast and a weird orange-brown color from all the runoff.

Personally I hope there's a decent current on the 24th, but I'll skip the e. coli, thanks

You guys are making me want to throw caution and sense to the wind and pay the $150 to do the sprint now. Sunday is out, so no Oly for me. This is 2 weeks after my first HIM, so a sprint would be fun.

I spent 4 years in Philadelphia, and those are 4 of the fattest years I had, among a couple decades of terrible eating. A compulsive overeater moving to Philly is like a compulsive gambler moving to Vegas.

So part of me wants to do the Philly tri some time, to put a coda on that period of my life. And, my running mentor and long time friend is a runner in Philadelphia, so the idea of doing the relay is appealing to me to get to do something with him.

Maybe next year.

I'm driving down to Philly on Thursday evening before the race with hopes to bike at least one loop of the course on Friday - maybe back track and do that section of turns a couple times, because I'm not used to sharp turns.  Is any time better than another as far as usual weekday traffic patterns?

I'd also like to get in the river for a few minutes to get a feel for the temperature and current.  If that's possible, where are the access points (closest to the actual course)?

This will be my second Olympic distance - first was Mooseman 2011 in NH water temp 58 - and is a training race for my first 70.3 in August.

Thanks and wish you all a great race,

Karen
