Extreme Veteran 476 Denham Springs | Subject: RE: Sportspectrum River Cities Triathlon Laurie, that is one of my pet peeves. Not a big one, but a peeve none-the-less. In my mind the Athena and Clydesdale categories are for people who are overweight and want to compete against other people of similar skills.
What happens is you get a 6'4'' ultra fit athlete that weights 208 or 205 and tears up the course. I'm not sure what Athena weight is. While it is perfectly legal, and well within the rules, I don't think it is the spirit of the rules.
They should do away with it or get some more weight classes.
That being said, and me being 5'2'' tall, I could put on 55 pounds and still not be a clydesdale The main time I am for people doing that is when they are in my AG and faster than me.... then I am okay with them jumping to that division I may try to get into the Athena division soon so I can start placing.... being a man and sub athena weight should just be over looked |

I always thought going by BMI would be much better, probably the only practical use for that measure. We could use the standard for "Overweight," or 25 as a cutoff. At 5'9" and a slim 185lbs, I'm at 27.3. BMI stands for Body Mass Index, and it is an assessment of your weight relative to your height. The equation is: weight in kg / (height in m x height in m) Here's a calculator: http://www.caloriesperhour.com/index_burn.html The results of the BMI calculation are categorized as follows:

Expert 950 McKinney, TX | Subject: RE: Sportspectrum River Cities Triathlon I'm 28.9. Last time I checked my BMI, I was considered obese, so small victory today! I'm 5'3", 163lbs. (athena is 150 and up) In my opinion, there should be some kind of height factor involved, for the same reason a 6'4", 208 Clyde can come in and mow everyone down, a 5'9" 155 Athena can do the same. Ok, enough thread hogging for today! |

Extreme Veteran 530 Northwest Louisiana | Subject: RE: Sportspectrum River Cities Triathlon Laurie, I'm just like you....I'm 5'3" and 164 lbs. I signed up under Athena as well. This is my first year to try triathlons and I know that as a newbie and being 33 years of age, I'll never place in my AG ever. I don't know if it is considered unfair for me to be an Athena, but I signed up because I am over 150lbs. I have wondered though about other women who are taller than me and weigh just a shade over 150lbs. Anyway, nice to meet all of you. You all seem like a tight group and I was a bit hesitant to join in your conversation. I was supposed to compete in my first triathlon this morning, but it was canceled due to weather. Well, I am totally bummed out right now. We got there and it was overcast and then it started to drizzle. We all got ready anyway. I got to rack my bike, set up my transition, got body marked, got my chip timing belt on my ankle, even got into the pool for a warmup swim. Then it started to really come down. Then it started to thunder and lightning. Long story short, they called the race. No more races scheduled locally for me. I'm really disappointed. Everything is soaking wet, including me and my spirits. Well, I'm off to get some good coffee and enjoy the day anyway. I'll definitely be doing the Jefferson Triathlon now July 16th and am 75% sure I'll do the RYKA IronGirl the following weekend before RiverCities on August 6th. Is that insane? Or too much? They are all Sprints. Happy Father's Day to all of our dads here. |

Veteran 288 Austin, Texas | Subject: RE: Sportspectrum River Cities Triathlon Re: Athena issue- I have a COACH- yes a coach- who teaches others how to do tri's and has done them for 5 years at least who's super tall and therefore qualifies for Athena and then brags that she has placed all these times in her age category....but in reality she probably would have only placed about 5% of the time! that really annoys me!I also beat her in my last race but she placed 2nd because she was in Athena!
Also regarding BMI and those stupid weight/height charts...I hate them. When I was in high school I was diagnosed anorexic and a size 4 fell off of me, however because I was so muscular, I was considered overweight by those charts. I was short (still am!), athletic and muscular but the scale # made it look like i was heavy. Edited by TriVeggies 2006-06-30 4:15 PM |

Veteran 199 McKinney, TX | Subject: RE: Sportspectrum River Cities Triathlon Athena - See I am new to the sport - I didn't sign up for that weight class for THIS event. But for another event afterward, I did. Okay I will admit it here - and I probalby shouldn't be embarassed but I am 5'6" and 165 lbs. I am 35 now just had a birthday pass. My BMI is 26.6 according to a calculator. I am a bit thicker around the middle and in the caboose. I was about to be REAL upset my weight wasn't dropping since beginning training for a tri. I must admit I probably snack too often with having a desk job, and my exercising is limited to the training I do. BUT!! the weight class - I dunno if I should or not. The RC will be my first full race - yay - but I'm also nervous. - Should I try to chang emy weight class - or don't worry about it?
Hotel - I will be staying at a hotel a mile away (the next exit) should I be concerned, or try to find someone to share a room? |

I think we are staying at the Isle of Capri. Did you get the update email sent out recently? Isle of Capri is changing names to Diamond Jacks Casino Resort....just FYI, if you need it. Are you guys meeting up somewhere on race day? I can't make it to the Macroni Grill dinner but would like to meet you guys since I've read so much about so many of you. I'm actually volunteering to help with race packet pickup on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. So if you see me at SportSpectrum, say hello! I know most of you by screen name only. |

Expert 1103 Plano, TX | Subject: RE: Sportspectrum River Cities Triathlon Can anyone tell me what the transition area will be like? Specifically, is it set up in a field (grass, dirt, etc.) or a parking lot (concrete). Since I ride on Speedplay pedals and don't keep my shoes on the bike, I'm curious whether I shoud worry about clogged cleats during transition. If so, I'll bring my covers; if not, it's one less thing to worry about. |

Depending on where your rack is, could involve a LOT of running with the bike, both leaving and coming into the transition area. Last year I basically destroyed a brand new pair of Look cleats running in my bike shoes. This provided the impetus for me to go to shoes-on-the-bike. Bare feet fare a lot better on the asphalt than plastic cleats. |
