Is it realistic to hope to "run" the 5k in October if I'm just starting to walk now?  My plan is to walk it if need be, but I AM going to finish!  My bike, for this year anyway, is a Fuji Palisade urban commuter model.

I would work towards running it and if need be then walk during the race. No point in forcing the run and injuring yourself to the point you can't workout. This is, of course, just my opinion.

Leatherneck, welcome... and no worries, there are MANY trifolk who have been or are seriously overweight and working on it. Good on you. I'd second the recommendation to walk for a while.

And I wanted to say 'hi' because I lived in Bellefonte, PA for some years before moving to AK and spent a fair amount of time in Williamsport with friends.

Just wanted to let you all know (to keep my own accountability high), so far all good. 20 min run Sunday, short ride and swim Monday, and a longer swim today (as well as a fasted walk early this morning, just cause I felt like it).

It is winter here, so thankfully it has been pretty sunny and relativly mild, making getting out the door that little bit easier.

calluna, thanks for the welcome,  and howdy back.

The intent is to walk for the first 8 weeks, by which time I expect to be walking 3-4 miles per workout, and then add running as able.  After all, I've been living on a couch for many years.

Hi everybody !You know that feeling when you genuinely want something and everything seems to fall in place? Well I'm having one of those moments. After years of putting everyone first, it's time for me, and this time I don't feel bad for being selfish. Plus, I have my husbands support :-) I've been thinking of triathlons for a while now. They still seem scary and intimidating, but I'm ready to tri (OK that was corny, but you know what I mean) I'm ready to do this. Last month I spent reading about beginner triathlons, buying running shoes, work out clothes, downloading podcasts, and printing out training schedules. The last 3 days I've been convincing myself I can do this. Then I came across this website and this forum, and this post. Talk about things falling into place at the right time. This is exactly what I needed. I hope you all don't mind if I join in too. I'm definitely doing this for weight loss, but also b/c I think completing a triathlon will make me feel like a bad :-) (sorry, hope I didn't offend anyone). Seriously, for me it would a huge accomplishment, plus i think it would be so cool to say "I'm a triathlete" :-) anyways, so glad I found this site.Lala

First, welcome Lala.  Feel free to run any questions through the group.  I have done the BT mentor program before, although I had a partner to help run the group.  I've been at the tri game for a few years now, just due to some circumstances that were both totally in my control and beyond, my race $ wasn't there for a while, and no racing, no training, unfortunately.

Anyhow, I've done indoor sprints, outdooor sprints, 5K, half marathon, and HIM events, so I have a decent idea what helps, and how to get there from a "sub-optimal" body, and even what you can do with less than desireable training, but LOTS of guts and will power.

As far as the debate on running a whole 5K, go for it.  If you've been training for it, and doing well, nail it.  It might hurt, but believe me, it's a good one.  Just remember that there is a difference between hurt and pain.  Hurt can lead to pain, and pain leads to injury.  Only you can determine where those lines are.

In the grand scheme of things, running a whole 5K in the fall, if you've been training for it, should not be an issue.  Now if you walk a mile, jog half a mile, and walk the rest for training, then you try to just run the whole thing, that could be an issue.  But if you're working on reducing your run/walk intervals I would say just slow your run pace a slight bit and try to run the whole thing.

Goals for this week UPDATE

Swim: 5000 Yd. Did 2500  - additional swim anticipated for 7/5.

Bike:30 miles. Still getting my bicycle butt back, so I anticipate two rides of roughly an hour each. Bonus points to self if I do a third. Biked 14 miles yesterday in the rain.

Other: Learn something new and bike maintenance. Did some bike maintenance on rest day Monday - just basic stuff like thorough chain and gear cleaning, and my bike was happier for it. Of course, I then proceeded to get it (and me) soaked and filthy the next day...

Weight: 253.0

Well my cycling goal has been totally blown up.  Doing some cleaining the other day and realize that I have mould growing on some walls.  So I've been putting all of my extra time into cutting out sheet rock, patching, and repaint/papering.  At least my hands stink too much like bleach and other chemicals to be able to eat anything, so I should lose some weight.

I did 44 minutes in the pool today and only took breaths between laps, no rest breaks. I am rather pleased with myself. I have already lost count of how much I have done of each so I am going to say that I will follow my plan for the week and not miss a workout.

I am pretty bummed though; still sitting at 11 pounds gone and nothing for a week now. I was having trouble sleeping which will screw with the weight loss so I hope that I can start shrinking again now that I am sleeping.

I have found a lovely recovery shake if you are interested. 1 cup almond milk  1 tbl almond butter and 1 scoop chocolate protein powder. Mix well and yummy. I don't add ice it makes it too foamy.

I would love to join you guys on this. I started on Jan 1st at 254.5 couldn't lose nothing for 6 weeks got sick dropped 10 pounds. stayed in the 240-245 range till late april changed up my diet some then got down to low 230's got stuck there till early june when I decided to go more on a plant based diet for at least 70-80% of my meals now I'm fighting a 221 plateau. My Dr is still trying to get my thyroid meds leveled off so trying to deal with that.  Trying to train for a olympic distance next year. Signed up for a HIM last year never made there as some stress issues caused me to stop training. I have completed 2 decent rides this year a 65 miler on april 29th and then A 52.5 mile MS charity ride on 6/24. Really want to complete a century ride this year but don't know.  I was Bike commuting to work through April, may and part of june, then going to the Health Club at lunch but my gym partner is tied up for the next 4-5 weeks at work so I decided to pop the bike on the trainer ride for 30-60 minutes before work then drive to the club myself on lunch and run on TM twice a week, strength train twice a week and maybe swim twice a week, Yes I work 6 days a week. so far the running is working good, but the other days I usually do sauna and steam room and just do a recovery day. ok so thats my story.

I'm in! HW 349; LW 238; CW 263; GW 191.9 (My IMFL Bib#1919)

I completed 2011IMFL (15:43:59), see low weight above, and used my wife's neck surgery that went horribly wrong as an excuse to not do anything until a week ago.  I'm back and ready to go into beastmode again. BTW she is doing great now.

The goal for now has been consistency.  Each day I'm alternating Swim/Bike/Run and a 50min. Body Pump class.  Doing this until Sunday, then I'll start an olympic program culminating with late October race.  Then I'll shift to winter maintenance race the rest of the running season.  Then re-evaluate at the end of the year.

For those wondering about when to shift from walking to running, many of us (including very fit and thin triathletes) utilize a walk/run program (just google Galloway walk/run).

Well I will not be following the plan today (or maybe all week). I am supposed to do a short swim and a short ride today, neither of which will happen (family stuff), but I will get a 30 or 40 min run in today, so that will have to do.

So I guess my goal for this week is to keep active where I can with everything else going on, and to keep cleaning up my diet.

Hello All,

I've been lurking for a while but today when I saw this thread I decided it was time for me to sign up. My heaviest weight was 452 pounds in 2006. I weighed 354 last June 1st and my wife and I made some real changes and both lost 70 pounds. I have found about 20 of mine I am currently 307 pounds. I have ran two 5ks this summer and my wife signed us up for our first sprint. I is on July 29. I feel like I can finish it but I want to do well. I have made two 35 mile rides so far this summer and feel confident on my bike. I am worried about the swim. Back to the purpose of this thread, My goal weight is 202. My diet is great on a good day just way too many cheat days. I need to overcome the hard times once and a while.

Welcome to the new people!BigShow, try to make the transition from a "cheat day" to a "cheat meal." Once you can minimize the all day damage you can work on even fewer cheats.

So I did not hit my bike goal at all (since I didn't ride) due to the heat.  It was over 100 every day here in Indy.  Temps are supposed to be much cooler this week.  I did hit my 15 mile goal running (albeit vey slowly).

So my weight to start the week is 284 (down a little over 3 pounds).

My goals for this week are:

15 miles running and 30 miles on the bike.

Good luck everyone.

I'm down 2 pounds with virtutually no workouts and minimally proper nutrition.  277 for me today.

Depending on the state of home repairs, and my shoulder injury, my workouts will be not goaled.  I will do what I'm able, but at the present, the muscles around my shoulder and neck are so sore that it hurts to open my mouth wider than just to drink my coffee.

Good luck to all, and most importantly, have fun.

So after weeks of working hard to drop the pounds and get geared up for my first set of Sprints.... I go on vacation!!!! Ouch  a whole week in fact...  scale this morning up 5lbs. Actually not as bad as I thought so for the time being this morning I hit 240 yet again .. But lets squash em !

Monday

Swim

500 yards -- Done!

Run

3.11 miles  -- 12:00

Bike

45 minute Spin class 5:30

For my goal today I want to incorporate short sprints into my run maybe 15 - 20 s recover do again.

Is there a group goal yet or have I somehow missed this in the earlier posts..

Be great for us to hit a mile goal collectivly. Ie all of our run miles or Bike miles = 1000 by X date or something..

Just a thought

As of yet there isn't a specific group goal.  We can always make a spreadsheet and update it, but that's going a little overboard, IMO.

Since each person is looking for something different, it can be tricky to get goals across the board.  Someone that just started and has a long road could easily be intimidated by someone else's goal of 30 miles running per week.  Or feel that they aren't helping adequately with a big goal.

Anyhow, that may not actually be how anyone feels, but I personally like each person working on their own pace and just having a place to have some support, encouragement, and venting area as they need it.
