I'm in again. Will be my second IMLP. Hope to go under 12 hours this time. Woefully underestimated the difficulty of that bike, going to be lots of trainer time this winter.

My first full ironman, a bit nervous at what I face over the next year. Most places are already sold out, High Peaks, Golden Arrow, etc. does anyone have a lead on something within 20 miles of the start that still has openings? I suspect it's unreasonable to think any place has reasonable rates either. Thank you for your help.

Round #2 for me! This time I'm hoping to not break anything 3 weeks before race date and go into it healthy and able to race rather than just finish.

Looking forward to this thread.

Rusty, glad to see you're doing it again!

Jeff,

You were amazing out there at LP.  I saw you on the swim course and a run aid station.  I don’t know if you remember.  On the swim course a Lifeguard on a rescue board asking if you were ok.  That was me.  It was on the 1st loop after the turn.

Anyway just amazing you stuck out and finished.  Btw I also saw you come in.  Great job!

Jeff - we are - both me and the wife are in for LP again. We are noodling around with the idea of maybe doing IM Switzerland instead (its the same day) but I am 98% sure we are going to stick with LP for 2013. Either way though I am with this group 'til July 28, 2013!

1. Is this your first IM?

This will be my first IM race.  I've done 3 half-distance swim/bike events (as a relay, with a runner), and I was supposed to do Muncie 70.3 this year but it was changed to an Olympic.  I am doing my first complete IM 70.3 next month.

2. Have you done LP before?

I've never raced the course.  In 2011 I rode a single loop, and this year I swam the double loop and rode the double loop.  I will admit, the hills kicked my butt, big time!

3. What are your goals for the 2013 race?

As my first IM race, my goal is to finish.

4. Do you have any specific questions that you wish addressed about LP (the race, training etc&hellip

Not yet, but I'm sure I will have lots.

rummy - 2012-08-06 10:37 PMI would like some advise on bike gearing for the hills. Looking forward to the race but happy to have 11+ months remaining. Rummy.
My take is; sub 6hr bike a 12-25 cassette with standard crank. A 6+hr bike a 12-27 cassette with standard crank or a compact crank. IMO with out knowing anything about your current cycling abilities, put on a 12-27 cassette with your current crank and try it. If you tend to have a harder time climbing hills think about a compact crank.

Tasr, would you go a 12-27 AND a compact crank for a 6+ hour ride?  I'm probably looking at somewhere around 6:45 on the bike.  I currently have a compact crank and a 12-25 (rode 2 loops this year but struggled in the second loop).

I currently have a room at the Best Western, just outside of the oval, that I will be giving up.  I'm not sure what their wait list situation is though.  I can let you know when I will be calling to cancel if you want to give it a shot.

Hi Erin,

If you struggled with the 2nd loop, I think you answered your own question.  Sure you can ride a 12-27 cassette even a 12-28 with a compact.  Remember you will still need to do a little running after the bike.  Having fresher legs will help with that, also another years worth of training.

My goal is definitely to finish.  Between 12-13 hrs would be great, but I primarily want to finish.

One of the other posts mentioned that the swim has moved.  Was this announced or posted somewhere? Just curious if there is some official info posted somewhere about changes for 2013.

Thanks very much - looking forward to my first IM.

Ha Ha! Welcome to the group, you are going to love IMLP! No, the swim has not moved - that was just a joke carried over from last year's group. It seems that we could never get straight on where we were going to meetup for the annual BT pre-race swim. Over the next year you will find this thread to be chock-full of useful information, VERY jokey, and probably a fair amount of smack talk thrown in. For instance, I probably would have already started in on Tasr (James), but I have to figure out how to drop AT LEAST 50 minutes off my best IM time first.

Seriously - I don't know what it is about the BTrs that decide to do IMLP, but year in and year out they make for one of the best, friendliest, and most helpful groups on BT.

Again - welcome to all - it is gonna be fun!

Thanks - that's awesome, I totally fell for the old joke about the swim venue.

I am looking forward to Lake Placid next year and also following the thread.  I've done a half iron, but this is a huge step up for me.  The bike is my weak link - I have a lot of work in front of me over the next 11+ months.

I gained almost 20% with that program last winter.

Gluck!

My tri friends think it's hilarious that I thought the swim had moved to Saranac Lake.

Also, WTC is considering rules revisions or will adopt after Kona this year so that it in 2013 it will be draft legal as long as you are moving less than 12 mph/19 kph.  I guess with all of the Olympic coverage, a long course draft legal race was inevitable.  Kona (long course on NBC every year) and the Olympics (short course, highly visible on television) have finally been put together to keep improving marketability/exposure.

No doubt I'm going to jump right on Rusty's wheel going up Whiteface.  I'm sure he'll pull 12 mph and I don't mind riding tactically if it means getting out of the wind.

Ha - you are going to have to be faster than that, because I am going to be stuck on James' wheel. Rumor has it that while we were goofing off on The Bears last month, he was climbing Whiteface at almost 14 miles per hour...

And that was just using his left leg! James' is trying to balance out his power with some crazy one-legged drills. And I checked his power file and his avg was 14.97 up Whiteface... for 5 repeats to the summit.

2.  Nope

3.  13:30 or so is a reasonable goal, under 13 is a stretch; had to basically walk B2B, so there is something to build upon!

4.  Best way to prepare for the second half of the bike loop

Todd,

I stayed at The Saranac Hotel this year. It is 8 miles from LP and on the shuttle route, so it was super easy to get into and out of town race day. Rooms were $140 + tax for 1 Queen or $170 + tax for 2 Queens. The hotel is older and I would only give it 2.5-3 stars, but it was clean and served me well.  They had a three night minimum, which you will bump up against everywhere. In LP the hotels have 4-5 night minimums.

OK--I was looking at a tune-up 70.3 race which is part of the Fink competitive plan on the first week or so in June. Any suggestions--Knoxville, Rev3 Quassy(conn.) or Eagleman. Open for any suggestions or ideas. I live in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of those races - they are all fantastic from what I can tell. I am probably WAY in the minority on this one, but would you ever consider NOT doing a HIM as a "tune up" race?
