Master 2759 Los Angeles, CA | Subject: Had my first indoor pool clash with other swimmer last night Greetings everyone! Soooo, about an 50 minutes into my swim workout last night I had my first clash with someone while I was circle swimming with a pretty fast (~1:45-50/100) swimmer. This overweight late 40's lady jumped into our lane at the halfway point and blocked that side (it didn't seem like she was moving forward at all). I must have been 1 foot behind her when I happened to look up a bit (luckily because I felt no draft) and quickly squeezed between her and the circle swimmer. I accidentally bumped her a bit with my right arm as well as the circle swimmer with my left. Anyway, the circle swimmer wasn't bothered but the lady probably was. At the end (when she finally reached it) I stopped and politely requested she move to the adjacent lane because the swimmers there paused alot. I also advised her that she may be accidentally bumped again and perhaps injured by the circle swimmer and I. She got so angry and kicked my left thigh . I just said, "Okay, swim at your own risk then." So the circle swimmer and I continued swimming and she didn't leave the wall. She moved back to the rec swim section and complained to a lifeguard who later came over to hear my side. I wasn't kicked out, yay! =D |

Pro 6520 Bellingham, WA | Subject: RE: Had my first indoor pool clash with other swimmer last night Instead of asking her to move into the other lane because people pause more there might have better been replaced with concern that it would be safer for her in the other lane. I assume she was new to the whole lap swimming thing and people generally are a little stressed about new environments. At any rate, her reaction was totally over the edge. If someone intentionally kicked me I'd be in the lifeguards and/or managements face to have that person removed. From what you describe it does not sound she "accidentally" kicked you while swimming but stood there and struck you. I would not accept being assaulted. Edited by popsracer 2012-08-15 1:03 PM |

Champion 7595 Columbia, South Carolina | Subject: RE: Had my first indoor pool clash with other swimmer last night I've adopted a policy of never making suggestions such as 'move to the next lane' at the pool, even if the advice is self-evidently correct. It never leads to a good place. In your case, I'd have just kept swimming. People usually get the message pretty quickly. Interesting that she complained to a lifeguard after assaulting you... |

Extreme Veteran 5722 | Subject: RE: Had my first indoor pool clash with other swimmer last night I was 'jumped on' by another swimmer because I would touch his toes before passing. I ended up giving him the 'shawinigan handshake' in self defense (google it). It was invented by our prime minister. I have learned the best thing to do is speak to the lifeguard first, explain to them and let them explain to the other person. Works out well. May I also suggest bringing coffee to the morning lifeguards. |

I usually just keep my head down and swim. But you’re saying you “politely suggested that she move to the adjacent lane…” and she abruptly went ballistic and intentionally kicked you, and then complained to the lifeguard about you? Are you sure there aren’t some details you’re leaving out…? |

Veteran 1384 Panama City, FL | Subject: RE: Had my first indoor pool clash with other swimmer last night My lunchtime swim sessions are closely monitored for all involved and the head lifeguard will "seed" the lanes trying to match swimmers of similar abilities. A lady like that would have been at the "rec" area in our pool where the old ladies do their water "jogging/floating". I mean, pretty much if you see a couple of young/lean/mean guys who are swimming pretty well, and there's other space available, don't get in the way. Some people just don't know i guess. |

Do you know if she got in trouble after the lifeguard heard your side? Just curious. Indeed! After I saw her complaining, I think she left. Lifeguard felt bad about the kick but said they can't do much about swimmers who interfere in lanes the way they do sometimes. I was assured next time she kicks me she will be asked to leave the swim area. |

Extreme Veteran 863 West Michigan | Subject: RE: Had my first indoor pool clash with other swimmer last night You should have flopped like a soccer player on the pool deck, clutching your leg. or, more realistically, I would have called over life guard asap, asked her to explain to the lifeguard why she kicked you. Then waved as the lifeguard escorted her out. There is no way the LG would allow a swimmer to stay no matter how comical the kick may have been. She still kicked you and action like that should have consequences, even if it's being removed for the day. |

Expert 1224 Is this Heaven? No, it's Iowa. | Subject: RE: Had my first indoor pool clash with other swimmer last night She kicked you?? I mean, she really kicked you?? That is awesome. I've seen some issues arise at my pool too. Most of the time, it's not my fault... most of the time. There is one guy that always shows up and demands to share a lane when the lanes are full. He is also the same guy that will Never offer to share a lane when it's his turn to return the favor. Gotta love that. Oh, and he's a middle of the lane directly over the black line kind of lane sharer guy. I had an altercation with a swimmer about a year ago. Head on collision rolling along pretty fast too. 1:25 ish per hundred yards doing repeat 300s. I was so irritated at this idiot. I preceded to scream at her "What are you f-ing blind?!?!?" I swear on the life of my three boys this is what she said: "Yep, since birth. Thanks a-hole". Needless to say, she owns me now. We laugh about it when we "see" each other. She likes to ask me for small favors like grabbing a kick board or and extra towel. She gets no resistance from me. I just wonder how long I should accept her "pool bit~h" status.

106 | Subject: RE: Had my first indoor pool clash with other swimmer last night I usually have the biggest problems with the water aerobics people. The old women who get in the pool and just bob up and down. They come in packs usually, 6 or 8 of them and they get in the lane nearest to the locker rooms (the pool at my gym is only three lanes wide). They start their bobbing up and down crap and get the water so choppy you can't hardly swim and if you so much as stop for a second to adjust your goggles or anything, they come under the rope into your lane. |

Member 91 Baltimore, MD | Subject: RE: Had my first indoor pool clash with other swimmer last night How much force can you really put on a kick that's under the water? Where I used to swim, the deep end was 8ft. There were times when I had to share a lane when I would pass people UNDER the water. I can't do that at my current pool as it's only 5ft deep. Luckily, at most all I need to do is share. When I go, it's not that crowded. And I too want to do a race where 1:45 is fast. I'm pretty sure I could podium at that one. |

Yeah, I hate it when people do things that are different than what I'm doing. So annoying. Especially if they are old. |
