I'm considering getting a fully-suspended MTB for trail riding (not downhill). Wonder what others are riding and if I can get some pros/cons of your rides.

I currently had an old school DEAN Ti hard-tail with a combo of XT/XTR parts. I love the bike but it's hard to find replacement parts, and I'd like to go to disc brakes (I'm riding the original Shimano V-Brakes).

Thanks for any input.

If you are not part of the downhill set, I SWEAR by my 29er.  LOVE IT.  Revolutionized moutain biking for me and I go my first MTB in 96.

I have the Specialized Stumpjumper FSR 29er.  So a full suspension 29er with SRAM 7/9 groupo, juicy hydaulic disk brakes, tubless compatable (haven't gone that route yet)...  LOVE IT.  It's best for X-country and if the switchbacks are not too tight, some all mtn riding as well.

I will never ride a 26 again (unless I dust off my old Cannondale for kicks).

Whatever you end up with, I'll take the DEAN off your hands. I promise to take really good care of her.

I ride a full carbon Scott Spark. It is a full suspension with Shimano XT group. It has been a really good bike for cross-country. It is a 26 as I have not jumped on the 29 bandwagon yet. The 26 works just fine for me with the type of riding I do. The only thing I do not like about the bike is the fact it is full carbon. I have never had a problem with it but everytime a rock hits it I cringe, it is all psychological but I will go back to aluminum on my next bike.

I'm still in love with my 1994 rim-brake, 26", double-butted steel hardtail, also. A lot of the trails I ride are more technical (read: roots & rocks), so I'm not as eager to jump into a 29er.

My Buddy has a GF HiFi 29er and he really likes it.

I have a Trek Fuel EX8 and I like it.

Both are GREAT bikes.   I like the Trek ABP feature that prevents "brake jack" and their suspension design does a good job of working with the Fox ProPedal shocks to cut down on "pedal bob."

I was looking hard at the same bike that Kido got but this lightly used Trek came along and I couldn't pass it up.

I also want to say that moving from a HT to a FS bike was like night and day.  It was like riding an angel the whole time, my lower back felt SO MUCH better after a long ride.

Whatever you get, enjoy using it.   My Trek is in storage while I am in China. :^(   Really missing some good MTB trails!!

Thanks for the replies.

I've been considering a 29er as I mostly ride single-track. However, I'm having a hard time getting past the weight of these bikes as compared to the DEAN. Of course, going full-suspension is going to tip the scales more than a hard-tail (in the same caliber of bike, of course).

Right now the Ibis MoJo SL-R (26) is at the top of my list. I'm also diggin' the Niner R.I.P. 9. However, both of those bike have price tags that, although representative of the pkg as a whole, are pretty steep. I've thought about looking for a bike with a nice frame/shocks and going with an SLX group (as much as it would pain me to do that) then upgrading components as needed.

So many options...

@bcart: I love my DEAN! I ordered all the parts individually and built it up myself (I was a mechanic at a bike shop at the time) and spared no expense. It's a great bike, but I'm ready for more current technology.

You said it yourself. The love affair is over, send it on. I'll even cover shipping.

On another note, I tried out a friend's Moots YBB and it was flippin' sweet. Just enough flex/bounce to take the edge off, but not go full bounce in the back.

One of my riding buddies recently sold his Trek EX8, he loved it but wasn't riding enough to justify keeping it. I don't think you can really go wrong with any of the newer rear suspension designs.

You, sir, are the more opportune thief. In case bcart falls through, I'd be happy to help you rid yourself of that Dean.

I've got a Niner Jet9 and I love it, I can't imagine riding anything else now.  The main place I notice its 29er-ness is in the quick little accelerations that seem to take a little more effort, but once you get going you can just clobber everything so the key is to never slow down .  As far as handling, it actually feels fairly quick to me (though definitely not twitchy) though that could be because I came from a really slow 26" bike previously.  I looked at the R.I.P. but decided it was more bike than I need and I couldn't be happier with the Jet.

I have an aluminum frame hard tail from 2001 that I love to ride.  Perhaps, though, I would be happier with a newer bike.  I moved north and the trails are rockier and higher impact, so I can't move as fast.

I've got a Salsa Horsethief that helps me crash on my face successfully at least once a week.  Love the ability to go up and over anything (including the handlebars) on the trail.  I like the Salsa lineup for bang for your buck on complete bikes.  Mine came tubeless ready with Stan's Flow rims, ridiculously durable and so easy to set up.  Highly recommend tubeless.

Lots of good choices/feedback here, thanks!

For those of you riding SRAM X7/X9, how do you find those components compare to Shimano (I guess SLX/XT would be comparable and not XTR)?

I just got a Santa Cruz Superlight 29". OMG do I love it!!! I had a low end very heavy Trek front suspension before. I am so much more confident on my new bike. I can roll over so much stuff and I like the faster rolling. I was really skeptical of going 29" being a small 5'6" female, but after demoing this was what made me smile (well, I demoed a tallboy since these were not out yet, but needed the smaller frame). My husband got the carbon tallboy, but for me the benefits didn't outweigh the cost adder and it didn't come in small anyway. He loves his tallboy though. He was replacing an 8 year old Superlight. I'm not a bike geek, so I don't know the components, but I got the upgraded package. A ton of people have commented on how happy I seem this summer and this bike was kind of the catalyst for it all.

If I was going to pick one bike, I would definitely be looking at the Giant Trance X 29er.

http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/bikes/model/trance.x.29er.1/11514/55873/

It retails for 2700 and comes stock with a dropper post, which is huge on a bike like this. I have the Giant Anthem X 29er and I really wish this one was available when I bought at the end of last summer. The Maestro suspension platform is one of the best for all around riding. This would really make a killer all around trail bike.

I can't compare, but I CAN tell you that I love the X7/X9 (I have X7 shifters and X9 derailleurs) shifting feel.   The 1:1 system really works well, and I like being able to shift up/down with my thumb.  I've only had to adjust them once (one week after I bought the bike, poor setup by the selling shop) and for the past 2 years they've been "fire and forget."    The right shifter even survived a crash where I bent the ever-loving-hell out of the cast aluminum shifter lever.   I was able to disassemble the shifter, put the lever in a vice, straighten it, and then rebuild the shifter with no problem.

I have an XTR crank and BB on my bike and it has performed well.  Quiet, sturdy, no complaints.

I ride a 2011 Epic 26er and It is the most fun I have had on two wheels in a long time.  It is all Sram XO with the 2x10 set-up.  I seriously love this bike.  It will not be sold...ever.  I know a lot of people like the 29ers and they are fast and are more forgiving to beginners.  I would go with a 29er if for a hard tail, but it just seems too much for a FS bike.

Well, after a considerable amount of thought, and the fact I'll never get another $5k+ bike past my wife , I decided to look into a '12 Giant Trance X3. The bike got a good review in MBA, and they always put together a good component package for the price. (I had a Giant ATX 780 back in the day and it was a good ride.) In any event, I stopped by the LBS today and asked them to try and find one for me. Hope they come through!

The Trance looks like a good bike.  I was seriously considering one for myself when I was shopping around.

Tell me when/if they make a trance 29er, and I might be sold.

For a few hundred $s more, I may try to get the wife to let me spring for the 29er 1 over the 26" Trance 3. But, if the 29er doesn't work out, the Trance 3 will still be a nice full-susp for me.

The 27.5's are the new thing, a compromise between 26'ers and 29'ers. I just picked up a Jekyll 3 my local shop had a clearance on the 12's.. Love it! Various suspension setting, built very beefy for most anything except hardcore free riding or dh. I doubt you'll find anything more responsive in n Xc bike than your old dean xtr, but wait till you get spoiled by 150mm +. I'd love to try an enduro event with this thing.
