Total Time = 5h 51m 49s
Overall Rank = 165/504
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 23/62
Pre-race routine:

Ate a bagel and some fruit in the hotel. Waited 15 minutes to catch the elevator. Then made my way to the transition area with 35 minutes to spare. Used all those to set up and make ready.
Event warmup:

Some stretching is about all.
Swim
  • 35m 26s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

The 44-49 group (mine) started the third wave. Overall good start, I was right near the front for my wave. I did have some navigation issues, kept swimming to the right!!
What would you do differently?:

Navigate a little better.
Transition 1
  • 03m 18s
Comments:

No issues. Wet suit came off easy. Had a little trouble finding my back shirt pocket for the salt tab container.
Bike
  • 2h 55m 7s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.19 mile/hr
Comments:

I think if I could have stayed around the 3'15"-30" range my run would not have suffered as bad. 19 mph avg was fast for me.
What would you do differently?:

I should have drank more liquids and maybe taken a salt tab every 30 min in stead of every hour. I ate a gel every 30 and that seemed to work okay.
Transition 2
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

No real issue here, socks went on okay.
Run
  • 2h 16m 16s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 24s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs crapping before I got off bike. Honestly I didn't think I would finish the race. I couldn't pick my feet up far enough not to drag the grass on each step. It took 20 minutes for struggling before I developed a pace. Stopped and stretched twice, no help. Popped salt tabs two at a time and hammered water/Gatorade.
One good thing I did was to carry my own water bottle with a big lid (cycling bottle). This way I could grab 2-3 cups of water on handouts and pour them in, drink later.
I did slow my pace to a 13-14 min/mi several times in the end. Heat and cramps getting the best of me. My legs were DONE!
What would you do differently?:

Take in more water/salt on bike as well as back off pace a little.
Post race
Warm down:

Passing out in grass. No, but I felt like it. Just stopped and drink a recover-rite my wife had ready for me and settled down. A little stretching. Was NOT hungry at all so I skipped the food. 30 minutes later I drink a second recover-rite.
Cleaned out transition area, found a shower, went back to get snacks and check results. This took lots of walking around the resort.
My wife was a BIG help with my gear and in support!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

PAIN! Cramping through the run I guess. Thoughts described earlier.

I'm giving a 5 for mental effort. I really wanted to quit!

Event comments:

This was my first 70.3. The volunteers were GREAT! We didn't stay for the awards (left 10 minutes before) due to a long drive back. If I go next year we'll stay another night. Beautiful resort as well!!!

Congrats on your first HIM finish!  Sounds like you had a solid race!  Too bad about the cramping on the run - I've had that too.  Not fun but you FINISHED!!
