My friends have checked in and all are OK. In this tragedy, it seems strange to be happy about those you know over those you don't. The tragedy just hit different people who are stricken horrilbly.

But Mark, Paula and their families are safe.

It's understandable. That's just how it is. Very happy many will get the same news. Very sad many will not.

Wish they would cover it like this guys says to.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PezlFNTGWv4

"If you don't want to propagate more mass murders...

Don't start the story with sirens blaring.
...

Don't have photographs of the killer.

Don't make this 24/7 coverage.

Do everything you can not to make the body count the lead story.

Not to make the killer some kind of anti-hero.

Do localise this story to the affected community and as boring as possible in every other market. "

As much as I agree, there's no way something like this would not be "glorified" by the media. The people have an insatiable appetite for real time news and the media want the ratings. Sad, but true.

I don't know how you could present this in a way that does not get major headlines.

I agree Crowny, but unfortunately, I agree with you too d00d.

Maybe they should stop putting out the name and picture all together. Some reporters would still report it, but if you got the big dogs to not print the name, there would be a drop in incidents.

You have to be mentally deranged beyond anything we can imagine (or evil) to think that this is justifiable. Children, kindergardeners, as targets?

I just don't have words.

Getting ready to turn the coverage off. My son will be coming home from school soon. He does not need to see this or see his Mom crying.

That would be a HUGE step in the right direction. And frankly, THAT is what he is recommending.

This story upsets me and p@sses me off.

Some guy was ticked off at his parents... and crazy... so he goes to their school to kill them, and takes out other people and KIDS too.

Oh no... he can't wait till they get home. No way. Let's go shoot innocent people and kill them too! ??? WHAT?! GAH! So upset.

They need to start locking schools down like they do the airport. When is the last time someone walked into an airport and shot the place up (since 911)? No one enters through a door with proper ID, and there are security guards at all doors where people enter/exit. While this sounds horrible, obviously something over the top needs to be done. No more shootings in schools. Period.

That's what I just heard too. Crazy.

Not to play devils advocate, but my mom was a teacher at a school about this size. I had to "buzz" in and enter the office if I went to see her. However....the office staff, principal, and most of the teachers knew me. I never had to show ID, I never had to 'sign in'....all I had to say was "I'm here to see my mom".

This guy could have sone the same thing.....it's being reported that he attended that school when he was in elememnary school too.....with no questions asked. It's pretty easy to conceal 4 guns and then once you're in the school, put your mask on and commence to firing.

It's truly tragic and sad. I want to go hug my two right now.....

I agree... It really pizzes me off that I have to continually look at that stupid fake stare and orange hair every time the Aurora incident is mantioned at all. Not even about the shooter... just mentionaed at all... they plaster the guy all over the screen again.

I say news agancies should just choose to stop giving so much dam publicity to these idiots when none is needed to report the news... it is plain and simple rating and attention getters all the while giving someone else the reason to get his name immortalized too.

What the heck is so wrong memorializing the victims while they report the story 3 months later?

I got an e-mail from my kids school outlining their security measures and how often they are updated.  They also included links with suggestions on how to talk to our children about this tonight.  I live in Minnesota, so nowhere near this tragedy.  I don't know what I'm trying to say, they were so young, and my kids are young and smart and full of potential.    Media, irresponsibility with guns, mental health, video games, desensitizing etc....  BLAH...

Stop. Turn it off. Yeah, your TV is just one household in a million ratings, but tell them you don't want to see widespread, sensationalized coverage of this stuff

My girls ate 5, 9 and 10 and will be sheltered from what happened today. We don't usually watch news when they are around. I feel they will learn of evil and tragedies like today soon enough.

For F's sake, can we just take a moment and chill for a bit on the gun debate and try to send some prayers to those families that LOST THEIR FREAKING CHILDREN during the holidays?

I don't have kids and I am about as far geographically in the continental US and I am absolutely heartbroken over this

Could not agree more.  Now is NOT the time.

Sitting here filled with a combination of grief sorrow and rage over these killings trying to make sense out of the senseless. My heart goes out to the families of the victims and wish them strength and courage in the face of this grief.

My boy is in K. I saw a brief news report about a school shooting before I dropped him off. My MIL called an hour later and started giving me details. Even a grocery cashier tried to talk about it...til I was rather abrupt. I didn't want to know more. I'm glad I waited til I picked him up to look at news. Devastating. Just babies. He's outside playing, oblivious to most of the evil in the world...and I can cry and be thankful for that.

When I was a kid, we lived in Guatemala. They'd do Earthquake drills where we'd get under our desk or get to a door jam. When the earthquake stopped, we'd go outside.

Do we need to start doing a shooting drill at schools? I know it's rare, but How often do you have a school fire? Those kids had no idea what to do. I can't even imagine what that was like for those kids. How do you prepare a kid for that what if situation?

In AZ we still have earthquake drills every month or two...and we have lockdown drills for these situations. Big discussion at my school about redoing the locks on the older wings so teachers wouldn't have to go into hall to lock our classroom doors.

I came home from the pool today and found my wife visibly upset.  She was only just barely able to tell me the story.  We're both really upset by this and our hearts ache for all the families affected by this dirtbag.

It's so hard to fathom this and just before Christmas seems to make it worse.
