Jackie - while on your psuedo-paleo diet, what foods would you have pre-workout or pre-race?

And to everyone else, apart from Bagels, what do you eat pre-race?

Thanks, Mark.

I don't understand the question Embarassed

Sorry, remind me first, was it you that responded to an earlier post about paleo diets?

If not then that explains why you didnt understand the question :-)

If so what do you eat prior to racing or big workouts?

thanks, Mark.

So my question is should I just use water on the course and eat solid foods totally skipping any liquid nutrition? This coming weekend I'm planning on using some perform since that will be on course but I'm not sure how well that will sit. I'm not saying I can't handle the perpetuem but I just felt so much better without it where last year it worked pretty well for me.

I read an article this weekend, I think it was on active, about marathon nutrition. The author is nutrtionist Nancy Clark. Basically she was suggesting if you use Gu or another manufactured product for nutrition, you should mix it with water. Both contain the electrolites and carbohydrates you need to perform.

Last year a ran a marathon with a man who prehydrated with gatoraid and only drank that on the run and had some sort of Gu. At about mile 11 he couldn't urinate anymore and then he stopped sweating. He overheated and I left him with an EMT at mile 22. The MD said he took in too much salt and he body held all of the fluids. It was really freaky, his hands swelled up to more than twice their mornal size and he bacame bright red. It reminded me of violet in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory.

I carry a bottle of water and a bottle of Tang on the bike, and have one of each on the run.

Mark,

I'm back to Paleo now, but I'm post race. I'm trying to lose 18 lbs (already lost 5 so only 13 to go) but I specifically chose a time to start when I wasn't competing. I did by the book "The Paleo Diet for Athletes" and most of the early part of it is about timing of carbs around races and hard workouts. Basically, they say you should eat carbs, and fruit is good. But I haven't read the whole book or looked too carefully. I have never done an A race while eating paleo, so my pre-race stuff has included the usual non-paleo stuff. But I think if I skip the oatmeal and bagel and instead have a pineapple smoothy (which I've had before) I should be ok.

Gu is always very direct in stating that their product should be consumed with hydration.  I do think that in coming up with a nutrition plan for a race one needs to take into account all of the minerals and nutrients they are planning to absorb and do a reality check.  There have been some very good nutrition plan breakdowns for IMs on slowtwitch.com that are in a nerdy way fascinating.  Definitely a science and an art and part of the process of learning how to race.

RR is posted - these are great for making you think about good and bad and where to focus on next time - cant wait for the next race step up to Oly!

BTW, when it comes to teh april challenge do you automatically get 1 point for each event even if less than 30 mins? or is it just the events over 30 that count?

Thansk, Mark.

I was more amazed with what was happening with him than, anything. At least until he crashed. The EMT's put a cold wet towel on his heat and had him drink a bottle of water. It took him about 30 minutes to cool off.

I was off to a good start on my 20 Week HIM plan, thought I had seasonal allergy issues on Saturday morning, turned out to be another head cold.  Complately laid me out yesterday and missed a swim and a run.  Today was a scheduled rest day and back on the bike for 70 minutes tomorrow morning.  Then a run and swimming on Wed.

How's everyone's training going?

Running is going great. Swimming well, the ice has been off of the bay for only two weeks, so, that is dependent upon when I go downstate. I am about to ride my bike into my basement wall. I am getting tired of staring at a brick wall with a minion and a stick. My bike needs to be unshackled to ride free again!

Mitch, get the Strassburg sock for PF!

Mark, great race report!  Congratulations.  Pre-long workout is bagel with pbj, two eggs, and cup of half-caff coffee.  Then, a one-hour bottle of Perpetuem and Heed mix.

I've been working on getting stronger on the bike.  Colorado trip is in June and I want to ride in the mountains without killing myself!

My brother wears them and loves them. Once he got past the this looks weird part. He has not had PF issues since.

How are you taping your foot?  I've been dealing with minor Plantar Fascitis in my right foot.  never hinders my running, little soreness at start, but next day heel and arch are sore.  I've been icing and stretching (though nor enough) and have recently changed insoles in my running shoes and that seems to be helping.  Looking for any other treatments.

I wish I could find the link to how I tape mine but if you google for it now, than you can probably use the most popular method there now where you wrap around the heel. I don't do that method. i think it uses quite a bit of tape and from the sounds of it you don't need that much support.

I have 1inch atheletic tape that I tear in half

I start at the forefoot just behind the toes and then go straight back to about 1/2 inch up the heel. I then take the other half of the tape and start from small toe and do a diagonal across my foot and ending up about the same place as the first. I then take another piece and start from big toe and go diagonal across the same way.

After that I take another strip and go across the forefoot and then across the heel to help anchor it.

I use a golf ball, ice, stretch my calves and that helps.  Sometimes it is worse for me other times not. One thing I have not been doing (lazy me) is good mornings with a 45lb bar. Those helped me get rid of it in the past.

For me it all has to do with muscle in-balance where everything is so tight in my hamstrings, calves/achilles that it pulls on the plantar fascia as well. The good mornings helped to stretch things out as well as build up the muscles to get everything back in balance. ugggh I am saying all of this but not doing any of it. Why why why....

Last year I had things dialed in for my HIMs but this year once I have finally gotten into long enough workouts to really tell, what worked last year isn't working this year for me. But on the bright side I do have 3-4 more long days left to get it figured out. Fortunately I am pretty tolerant to things but just felt better not having perpetuem.

Hey Gang -

Good news from the neurologist - blood, EMG and nerve induction tests came back NEGATIVE.  Rules out a lot of the really bad stuff that has been keeping my wife and I up at night.  Turns out that the blood came back for an indicator of hyperthyroidism (which runs in the family).  Next step is the endocrinologist and more tests, which I can live with. I am back to  training (which I need to figure out and balance things with my issues). The week I took off was no doubt needed and helpful.

Ruling out the really bad stuff has taken a weight off my mind and given me some additional and needed perspective.  I am really questioning my long term IM goal and may pull that off the table because I am not sure whether it really matters to me. More to come.

Today was my first day on the bike, outside in the sunshine and I hit a PR. 14.25 miles in 39.41. The entire ride was 15.25 miles including warm up and cool off and it took 45:11. It made the last six months sitting in my basement staring at a brick wall seem worth it. Going out I felt like Lance on PEDs, then I turned around and realized I had a tailwind on the out. I still held a good speed with a stiff head wind.

So here is how life impacts one's training:  last night around 9:12pm as we're getting our 3 year old into bed my wife and I get the nervous feeling (based on events during the day and our daughters symptoms) that she has a UTI.  We decide not to wait until the next day to get her started on antibiotics so off to urgent care before they close at 10:00pm.  get there around 9:45.  See the nurse, see the doctor.  Possible UTI - so at least my wife and I aren't crazy.  Prescription gets phoned to 24 hour Pharmacist, we then go pick it up and get home sometime around 11:30pm.  Get the child to bed and crawl into bed.

This mornings plan was to be up by 5:30.  Do a 75 minute ride on the trainer followed shortly thereafter by a 40 minute run.  I had a horrendous head cold hit me like a ton of bricks on Sunday that I'm getting over.  Woke up this morning to my alarm and decided sleep was the best option less I add to many stressors on the system and get sick again.

I really hate missing workouts.  Seeing if I can get a shorter ride and run in this evening.  Then tomorrow morning is 60 on the trainer and another session in the pool.
