yarislab - 2012-12-25 5:21 AM Was out on a run and came upon 2 cats having sex and there was a 3 cat right there not more than a foot away just watching them. Was indeed the strangest thing, as i could not figure out why this third cat was watching the other two. Animals are indeed strange!!

Because they don't have internet!

Great stories. I will have to go with number one and two in the list of examples. Except the snake I saw was a python. Scared the you know what out of me. As I road by, I warned the homeless guys who were sticking gdrunk and laying by the side of the road just a few hundred yards away. I live in one of the wackiest places in the country anyway (Key West) so wildlife (whether animal or human) is not too unusual. Just makes life more interesting.

I've never seen anything too crazy, mostly wildlife. My pedal passed right over top of a diamondback rattlesnake that was sunning itself on the side of the road one day. That scared the crap out of me but after I got clear of him I stopped to check it out. I've almost hit deer while descending several times, that always gets the blood pumping. I saw a pheasant the other day during my ride and that was unique and pretty cool.

Almost hit a large doe on the bike leg of my first tri.  Charged by a angry mother turkey protecting her youngsters on the Appalachian trail.

A kangaroo, while not unusual, the strange bit was that it was bounding down the main street in a very busy outlying city suburb.

Seen plenty of wildlife: coyotes, owls, armadillo's, cows, horses, etc.  Probably the strangest thing was when I finally passed another rider.  That doesn't happen to me much.....

I was side by side with another cyclist on a long steep downhill when a squirrel ran out in front of us. It just missed going under my front wheel, but the guy to my right rolled right over it. Somehow, the wheel flung the apparently-uninjured squirrel up onto the guy’s crotch, where it hung on for a few seconds, and then jumped off.

Looking back, I don’t know how that guy didn’t wreck and kill us both. Not many people could maintain their composure when a rodent lands on their junk at high speed.

Last week, while doing a dull, easy run in the neighborhood park I noticed a car idling in the parking lot.  This was in the middle of a thunderstorm, so I just assumed someone had pulled over to let the weather clear.  Inside, were two, young, African-American guys with large, 1970s-fashion afros.  They stared at me as I ran by.  On my second loop they had laid the seats down.  The windows were fogging up and I could just see one partial Afro moving up and down.  Other than that, my runs are usually pretty uneventful.

I hate to be a bummer, but I saw a feral cat with it's head stuck in a glass bottle.

I had no idea what it was as I rode up.  I stopped and tried to think of a way to help it, but then it saw me and ran off.

Coolest,  Unclaimed Ipod, on the trail.

Strangest,  Red Tail Hawk swooping down at me x4 while on my bike.    Large Talons!!!

I've seen wild pigs cross in front of me on evening workouts. Once I saw 3 of them come out of the woods, pretty dang big..headed right across the road. Was very cool !

Also I see a nice Peacock once in awhile.

Two consecutive rides, two squirrels killed. Front and back wheel right over the top of them. Didn't crash though. I think it's a conspiracy of some sort.

I do believe most squirrels have a "suicide by bike" desire.

running once in the summer a big storm cam up out of no where.  a tornado briefly formed on the far side of the farm i was running by causing all of the cattle in the field to run through a barbed wire fence and decimate a small shack of some sort in the field.

cycling this past summer i came around a turn and there was a bull standing in the middle of the road.  i passed by it giving it as much room as possible and it stutter stepped at me. thought i was going to die.

a herd of rabbits ran in front of me once while cycling, not sure how i managed to avoid all of them.

How many have been on RAGBRAI?   The list is too long but you see pretty much anything on a RAGBRAI day.

Neat things - Navy Team riders helping anyone that breaks down or may possibly be injured.  My wife and I helped with two heat exhaustion people with the Navy Team help.  They pull out their phone and tell the 911 operator longitude/latitude exact location and they look at me and ask me for local information.  I run 1/4 mile down the road and read the blue 911 address on the closest house and other people on the route yelled it back to the crew on the phone.

Not so neat things - Male thong day.  We actually stopped and laughed for a while, so he was at least a mile ahead of us so we never had to see again.  Leather flap covering (think old westerns and what the Indians wore) and it was small leather.  Again not a great choice.

Brooks sponsored guys riding Penny Farthings on RAGBRAI every day.  Nice guys to talk to also.

Last spring I was on a run, later afternoon as school in the village had just completed, so there were kids walking, biking etc.  As I was running I approached a small group of middle school boys and ran around on the lawn next to the sidewalk.  Boys will be boys, and the heckling began.  One of the hecklers decided to run next to me in a mocking fashion.  So, as we proceeded down the walk, I calmly turned to him, and congratulated him on his choice of running with me, I appreciate the company, and..."only 6 more miles to go!"  The look of utter dismay and the slumping body language said it all as he slowly walked back to his friends.....by far the funniest moment of training I've been part of.

I see alot of wildlife in a park were I do most of my runs.  This morning I came across a beaver with a wound on its shoulder.  I contacted the city parks department as I didn't want someone walking their dog to cross paths with a wounded wild animal.  It turns out that this was the first sighting of a beaver in the park in years! I've also seen cougar, deer and coyotes in the same park.

Running in a very residential neighborhood this fall I came upon a huge hawk sitting in the lower branches of a tree near the sidewalk. I had no intention of disturbing it but as I got closer the hawk decided to skedaddle. It flew away, very low and right into the closed front door of an adjacent house. The hawk went to the ground on the stoop. I slowed to watch all of this happen. The hawk then popped up, took off and flew straight at me like a rocket--I think it was stunned, not malicious. I am not sure it even knew where it was going. I hit the deck and the hawk flew right over me in the space I had just been occupying.

Never saw it again.

I think it was ok.

This morning I was riding my 1.91 mile loop in my development. As I went past one house, I saw a line of trash from the back of the pickup parked in the driveway. I assumed that raccoons had gotten into their trash bags. On my 5 loop as I was coming up to that house, I saw what looked like a small person dressed in black getting out of the truck bed with a garbage bag. First thought was that someone was cleaning up the mess. As I got closer, I saw that if was a full grown black bear. When he saw me, he took off running behind the house. As I came back by, the bear was nowhere to be seen and the garbage back that he dorpped was not disturbed for my next 18 miles of riding. I guess the bear decided it wasn't worth it or he found something else better. I have a camera in my back yard and have gotten pictures of a black bear. It might be the same one that travels through this area.

This March out in Santiago canyon outside of San Clemente me and a buddy saw a dude on the side of the highway rocking out on a full 7-piece drum set complete with beats by dre headphones on. An hour later as we passed again he was still rocking out hard...in the middle of nowhere.
