Subject: I think I finished DEAD last!
I just did my first duathalon, I wasn't attempting to break any records and my big goal is to do a Sprint Tri, (in three weeks) that said I was still hoping to get the race done in under 3 hours. It was a Olympic distance 10 km run, 44km bike and a 5km run. Each leg was substantially slower then the mini goals I had set for myself, despite the fact that I felt strong and that I was going as fast as I was capable. I usually easily run a 10k in under 57minutes, didn't get this one done till 62 minutes?
The worst part was the first 8 minutes, when I got dropped off the back of the runners pack, and space between happened quickly with only 25 or so people doing the event. more then 400 in the triathalon portion.
The event was extremly hilly, and the back course of the bike windy.....Anyway, has this happened to anyone else?
I don't have offical race results yet...maybe tommorow, but I pretty sure I finished dead last, time aropund 3:39. I stopped counting after the bike leg.

Would it be the end of the world if you did finish last? The point is you got out and DID IT Unlike millions of other Americans who slept until 11 this morning and then stumbled across the house attempting to heat pizza they didnt put in the refridgerator the night before you were out making a difference in your life. Great Job!

I hope you do not take this the wrong way but it is better to be DFL then DNS..

You got out there, got a feel for the sport and you will be prepared for your next race...

Great Job.

So shekina is "glory" right?  I'm with those who say you are ahead of about 98% of the American population. You did it Drop the "dead last" and just focus on the "I finished" part!!

My only comment is to echo every single thing the previous posters did....

My dear...you just did what most of the population wouldn't even make an effort to try....

Pat yourself on the back and be gawd damn proud of yourself!

You now have a benchmark...

and frankly...braggin rights....

but the lesson I've struggled to learn in my newbie 6 months doing this sport is this...it's not about them...it's about me...it's about beating the voices in my head that said, "no way" "You're crazy" "You can't do it"...gawd how I love proving them wrong.

Congradufreakin'lations!

You deserve it

Can't wait to hear the next race report.

Shekina,

You finished ahead of me. I just started training about 6 weeks ago. I still have not worked my way up to Oly distances for any of the events yet. Stories like yours are inspiring for those of us just getting into the sport. I can't imagine how inspiring it must be for those around you that slept in that morning and awoke to their krispy cremes and coffee.

Congratulations.

Yep, I remember an awards ceremony at one of my first triathlons. They were almost finished giving out awards by the time I was done. It happens, you move on...you do better. Hang in there!!

I finished dead last in a cross country race in high school once, and it actually felt special in a way. If I was 2nd to dead last, it wouldn't have had that much of an impact on me, but being DEAD last gave me the opportunity early on in my racing career to realize that it doesn't really matter what place you're in. Every race you do will have different people in it that are at different levels, so it's kinda pointless to compare yourself to anyone else, and rather you should be more concerned with your own times and even more importantly, enjoying it! So I say cherish your dead last, learn from it, and realize that in every single race, someone has to come in dead last

My Grandpa once told me, after I got my arse handed to me in a track meet as a kid, "f you can't be first, be last, nothing else matters".

That's a tough duathlon distance, be proud of your finish!  Take what you learned and keep moving forward!

In the Tour de France, they award the last rider to finish with the "Lanterne Rouge" (trans. "Red Lantern"), representing the light on a train's caboose.  It's actually a coveted award.  Even professional athletes finish last sometimes.  You conquered a tough race and didn't quit.  Good job!

I'm going to steal this from a running friend:

DFL > DNF > DNS > DOA

It was a tough distance, and who knows why you had trouble on the run... but courses are not always measured properly. It's possible that it was longer than 10K.

You did it! Find joy in the accomplishment.

It's a sport that can be humbling at times. But stick with it, you'll gain speed and endurance. Learn lessons from each race and you'll get better. And one day this will be a fun story -- "when I started .."

As others said, you got out there and did it. That's all that matters. Great job.

I'm not sure how someone found this thread, but I do have a favorite part...

Motivated posted that the person who finished DFL was ahead of them in training, but ten years later, Motivated's profile picture is of them finishing an Ironman. Pretty awesome.

it is an honor to finish DFL.  Take pride in your accomplishment.

You were out on that course longer than anyone else.

(er... I don't need to explain the acronym, do I?)

Just want to second that it was a very tough distance. Distances like those would keep out most casual competitors... if it had been, say, 5k/10k/2.5k you could've gone the same speed and placed much higher.

Concur...the resurrection of some of the zombie threads is a neat feature of the update that included the "related" threads at the bottom... and that specifically is really cool!
